Leaving today, but have some thoughts. - their [b:5168381790]light rail[/b:5168381790] system is amazing. I wish Kc would create the same, however I believe it would take 10 years. Downtown to the airport would be a great 1st step. Then Downtown to Johnson County. Plaza to westport, Troost to downtown.. etc. - There is [b:5168381790]no trash here[/b:5168381790] in the city. The streets are virtually 100% clean. Sure the fact that it is clean, encourages potential litterers to NOT litter, but how do they do it? Its amazing. Even the train stops.. are [b:5168381790]designed perfectly[/b:5168381790], with heat buttons for thsoe waiting in teh cold... the trains themselces are designed beautifully.. each seat seems to be a marvel of design... must be danish. - the [b:5168381790]downtown is thriving[/b:5168381790].. although the dining does slow when Business people are not around. But many shops, street folk, restaurants, bars, sports fans, congregate and enjoy the nights and days in this expansive downtown district. [b:5168381790]When will KC do the same?[/b:5168381790]

[quote:aa276cb160="MILES"][b:aa276cb160]When will KC do the same?[/b:aa276cb160][/quote:aa276cb160] I wouldn't hold my breath. Right now we're young and wishing/wanting KC to meet our dreams. It's just not going to happen like that. Yes, eventually it will, but do you have 10-15 years to wait for it? Everyone is looking to the arena as some sort of savior. The arena is simply the begining of the redevelopement. It's like the bait to get major developers to at least take a look in our direction, hopefully see the possibility for progress, and buy. Don't forget that Sprint is heading that project. From what I've seen they aren't the sort of company to make bad investments. They see the potential. Time...

It will be a long time before we get light rail, people have been trying forever, and it always get shot down. while I am not all that pleased with some of the developments happening downtown, I must admit that it is thriving compared to say 5 years ago. It will be a long while before downtown is like minneap or stl or chi.

There's no reason to be sad. These answers are all truthful. I don't think anyones discounting Kansas Citys credibility as a loveable city. Just a little behind the times. Hey, at least we're not in Omaha.

Minneap is definitely a dope city, we were up there for a show this summer and i really enjoyed it...as for kansas city, at least we are heading in the right direction, at least things aren't at a complete standstill...like others said before, we are just a bit behind the times...one thing that confuses me about kansas city, is paretically every other city you go to that has a major river or lake, they take advantage of that waterfront and have really nice attractions by it...our river, just a bunch of casinos...and i really wish we could get that light rail, whenever it gets shot down it makes me feel the majority mindset of kc is that of a giant suburb rather than a city trying to reemerge...but there is hope, just may take some years, but i strongly believe this city will truly thrive once more and be able to stand firmly against cities like minneapolis with ease ...what would you all think about rebuilding the chiefs and royals stadium downtown? i actually think that would do wonders for the city, but i love the original royals stadium as it is and would hate to see it go, when it was built it was truly ahead of its time, and still stands as one of the best stadiums in baseball...but, i was just wonderin what others thought of this idea

haha "kbarnz" the bi-state thing affects our ability to get light rail. they want the kansas side to agree to it, but rich people have plenty of cars and gas. i say we cut them off and do it anyway. ::sigh:: i like littering. in cities. fuck a landfill. i'd rather people see how much filth they produce. it's not like it's better for the world for things to be put in landfills; in fact, i bet we'd have lots of lovely plant and animal life thriving off our waste if it filled the cities. then the morlocks would take over. minneapolis also, from what i know of it, doesn't actively try to smash small businesses, non-profits, and youth activities. kay barnes hates kids and anything she considers ugly, and doesn't care about the way people live. that's why 71 hwy looks lovely, and the houses around it are full of miserable people with kids in shitty schools...

I honestly could care less about 'light rail' if it isn't going to mobilize the people who really need it. And most of the 'light rail' campaigns in the past have taken no thought to folk in the inner city. Every city has its bright spots. KC has more to offer than just amenities. That's what makes it a great place for some... Downtown should be thriving here in the next 5-10 years, but the target audience won't be as wide and as broad as people think.

I wasnt here to see it.

Past light rail plans have failed because they've been much too vague and really didn't provide enough information in the initial stages to get voters behind them. Previous plans pitched short starter routes between the Plaza and Downtown, but again that didn't leave those further South of those areas feeling confident that they would be beneficiaries of such plans. To the credit of the light rail advocates though I can say that most of the plans eventually rolled out longer route aspirations that stretched as far as Southtown. In the past light rail campaigns seemed to be much more about 'development' than 'transportation'. So, while light rail may be a great idea... It's yet to be packaged in such a way that people will truly get behind it. The right plan will get voters attention. In the past light rail has been at least partly about mobilization. Thing is, who were planners trying to mobilize?

i bet by next year, if somebody was serious about it (which i'm sure some people are), it could pass. gas prices, y'all. we need, i think, the following lines... in order of my perceived importance: - down the paseo or 71 towards grandview, at least to around maybe the bannister area... - between waldo and downtown for a general midtown connection... - along i-70 out to the border between independence and raytown - along i-70 or i-35 into kck/argentine... maybe out to piper if people want to go to the nascar thing (it's bigger than it should be, heh.) - between downtown and the airport/northtown... (this is maybe more important than i think it is, but i'd rather help people get to work than help frequent flyers and visitors save gas money) - an express train between downtown and lawrence. - maybe one to overland park/olathe, but kids would probably be the only people who used it. and ex-hippies who think they're down to earth for riding the train. i guess there's a few areas out there that aren't wealthy. i dunno. - there should also be a train to offsite parking for the downtown arena... but that could be privatized... i think minneapolis and st. louis do that... kind of like an airport.

Money will be available. The Sprint Center will open its doors... I doubt gas prices will effect the vote as much as you think. Even with the spikes in gas costs locals haven't made a haven of public transportation. There really are no significant increases there. Bare in mind that light rail is going to run about 40 million dollars per mile. A 24-mile route is going to run the city 800 million dollars.

A light rail from downtown to the plaza would be the most practical to start with. With stops in midtown, of course. When you start running to the suburbs you actually lose money. Just look at the bus system. The residents in KC's suburbs for the most part have personal transportation. Which is the obvious reason to why the idea of a light rail was voted out. Well, that and people worried about WHO would be riding back to thier precious niegborhoods. "Ah-oh, the scary black people of midtown are gonna have a way to come get our daughters pregnant and steal our plasma TV's." 😆 OK. In all actuality it would give people in the city without personal transportation a larger variety in the job market. I guess when YOU have what YOU need everyone else is just missing out?

I just don't know that 200 million for a 5-mile route (essentially) will be beneficial to the people who can really utilize that type of transportation. 5 miles is an excellent starter route. I'm just not sure the Plaza should be the Southern post.
