Jamie Foxx concerns me sometimes. etiquette, larggest, respect, pacing, and more .. . . . . .. . . . . .. . .
his timing, could be ego trippin comes to mind with some of his actions, maybe stress, ignorance, grief with the loss of his grandma, don't
these are the kinds of things that show the character of a person.
seems like he takes 2 steps forward and 4 backwards all the time
pretty soon, you just loose your footing and you are lost.

Dude's just a big class clown. I don't even think it's deeper than Fox thinking he's the funniest and most talented, and has probably just always been a smart ass. My best hope is he's friends with that dude... he was just responding to other dude criticizing his career, so maybe it was all friendly. Same shit happens at comedy clubs and hiphop shows all the time. It was pretty fuckin funny though.

i agree with necia.
it was funy at first, but then its like an ego storm came through and wiped out the whole room's aura on some brain-wash stuff.
Either Jamie has a huge ego right now or he is freaking out and doesnt know how what to do now that he's famous.. or both.

jamie foxx's standup sucks.
he's kind of channeling jim gaffigan a little.. it'd be dope if that guy stomped jamie foxx on stage. but i guess he was right, the dude's not very good.

wow...I have to admit, that was pretty funny. He should have stopped earlier, though...all of that wasn't called for.
You can't get a group of comedians together like that and not have any jokes about each other. Jamie took it personal and went a little too far with his.
did you see Doug's face at the end?

I think doug should have stopped as soon as Jamie butted in. I noticed the same thing Sike did, the jokes were completely random and way off subject. It was an Emitt Smith "ROAST", not a congradulate him on his career speach.

Necia you hit the nail right on the head.
I found myself laughing for a moment, but towards the end I wondered why I'd been laughing in the first place.
Sure, it's a roast so "everything is game", but Jamie Foxx humiliated Williams. The interesting part is Williams is a pretty decent stand-up act. I've seen him several times. So his bit stunk... It happens. That was no reason for Foxx to stand in that guy's light.
That smacked of elitism.
Jamie Foxx is one film away from being Doug Williams himself.

Did you see the look on Stu Scott's face when Doug Williams sat down?
Jamie really botched this one...
He may well have permanently ruined Williams career.
His introduction of Williams set him up for failure.
The crowd never gave him an chance.

I Can Relate This To When D-Crew And Friends Are In The Studio BS'n, It Always Ends Up With Us Recording Freestyles Dissing Each Other, Or Me And Some Of Our Fam Versus J And Trav... And Seeing How J And Trav Are The Only Lyricists There, They're Almost Always Guaranteed A Win In The Situations, But Me And Others Make The CHOICE To Call Them Out On The Mic...
I Don't Think Any Comedian Would've Just Simply Laughed The Joke Off, More Than Likely They All Would've Responded... And This Was Recorded In 2002, So The Whole Money Thing Isn't Really An Issue, Jamie Has Really Just Recently Became A Smash Hit In The Entertainment Industry... He Was Still An Urban Star, For Lack Of A Better Term, But As Doug Pointed Out ALI Was Sort Of His Breakthrough...
And As Jamie Stated Doug Calling Him Out Just Gave Jamie An "Extra 10 Minutes", The Fact That It Was At Dougs Expense Was Thanks To A CHOICE That He Made... Yeah, well said. That's kind of how I saw it. He was just so brutal though, which is why when it shows the people in the audience they're falling off their chairs laughing. Jaimie kind of provoked it, but dude took it there with his comments to Foxx, and Jaimie just ripped dude to shreds.

seems like everything can result in a battle of sorts. why does it have to be that way?
Is respect something these days that is always being earned?
Dissin folk is the way to WIN REspect?
As Doug pointed out he knew he was low man on the totem pole, Mr. Foxx belittling him just made Mr. Fox look little-er 2 me.

During his bit though?
Jamie could well have responded after he returned to the podium.
Even then, that's a bit sketchy considering how unknown Williams is.
I think you have to give him his moment in the sun.
Especially being a Black comic who's been in his shoes at one point.
[quote:8db65ba2dc]This Was Recorded In 2002, So The Whole Money Thing Isn't Really An Issue, Jamie Has Really Just Recently Became A Smash Hit In The Entertainment Industry...[/quote:8db65ba2dc]
Foxx had obtained a level of success at that point in his career few Black comedians...hell comedians for that matter...EVER achieve. No, he wasn't the crossover success and member of the exclusive first name club at that time, but he'd had a successful run on the small screen and had appeared in 10 feature films to that point (three of which he was the lead). Foxx was paid then.
Remember...
'Held Up' had a small budget because the film was shot in one remote location for the most part. He made a ton of money on just that film.
Foxx's problem wasn't money. His problem has always been his inconsistency as an actor. His acting career on the Silver Screen has been marked by bad films and even worse performances. His saving grace has been his character portrayal in biopics (ie, Bundini Brown - 'Ali' & Ray Robinson - 'Ray'). We'll save this for another discussion, but while I believe his portrayal of Charles is arguably one of the very best performances in the last quarter-century of motion pictures I know full well that Charles' passing is what made that film magical.
Foxx should always remember his two best performances came in non-comedic roles. That should humble you Jamie... Especially since you took the time to berate Williams for a bad routine.
[quote:8db65ba2dc]He Was Still An Urban Star, For Lack Of A Better Term, But As Doug Pointed Out ALI Was Sort Of His Breakthrough...[/quote:8db65ba2dc]
No, his portrayal of Drew Brown was his first standout performance.
He'd been given the opportunity to play leads three times before 'Ali'.
Foxx has been his own worst enemy.
[quote:8db65ba2dc]And As Jamie Stated Doug Calling Him Out Just Gave Jamie An "Extra 10 Minutes", The Fact That It Was At Dougs Expense Was Thanks To A CHOICE That He Made... Now Honestly If Someone Blatantly Called You Out In A Media To Where You Can Retaliate And Further Your Main Cause, Yourself, Who Wouldn't Take It?[/quote:8db65ba2dc]
Life's about picking your battles.
Williams didn't start that war of words. Foxx did.
Listen to his introduction of Williams again.
Foxx was wrong.
Honestly, if you're a party to a poor performance from a local artist in his come-uppance are you going to rush the stage and steal his set away from him just to sustain the tone of the show? I don't know anyone (at least I hope I don't) who would do such a thing. It's uncalled for.
Why?
Because after being publicly embarrassed on that kind of stage you stifle the progress and potential of that newcomer...and very possibly permanently. You make it so that audiences never again lend their ear to them in spite of their artistic merit and subsequent material. As a veteran Foxx, and more to the point the artist, should know better.

Yeah, I don't think Foxx was 'right' in doing what he did. But I don't think anybody should be surprised that he did it. The biz is ruthless. Hiphop, comedy, hollywood. I bet plenty of comedians tried to put Jamie down one time or another.
If you make it in this biz, you can be set for life. It's feast or famine, and I think Foxx was being hella greedy in that he's been feasting and won't let this dude get a couple bites, but that's the nature of the game. To get where he is you have to be compulsively ambitious. The sort of ambition that comes from insatiable greed.
I'm not saying its a rule, but I do believe that as a generality those that make it the furthest are some of the most self-centered and self-interested people you'll ever find. Either there or in the gutter. People find their place within a spectrum with how they act. Either your actions reflect balance or extremity puts you on one of two ends of the scale.
Foxx is on the flashier end, he's not a balanced sort of individual.

It's definitely dog-eat-dog. I feel you there.
I just hate to see someone who's made it stifle the progress of another up-and-coming artist. That's so unnecessary. You don't have to be a cheerleader, but damn... You don't have to be a road block either. There's room for other artists to be successful as well.

Public humiliation of that kind follows you throughout your career.
More importantly, the stage it was set on only amplifies the effect it could have on Doug Williams' future. His artistic merit could very well not be enough to overcome such an embarrassment.
This didn't happen within the confines of some quaint nightclub.
This was a televised event and it's now been immortalized on YouTube.
[quote:20447842d6]Dude was bombin out on his own.[/quote:20447842d6]
Ultimately a bad set falls squarely on the shoulders of the artist.
Doug Williams is the only party who would've truly been effected.
It should be noted though that Jamie Foxx set him up for failure.
Again, go back and listen to his introduction of Williams.

It's quite different.
The artist is only represented on record.
A better analogy would be grabbing a microphone and heckling a booked act at 'The Jumpoff' for a poor performance...during their set.
Speaking honestly...
Would you ever do such a thing?

I am for me and I just stated my judgements about what I saw as you have about it as well.
that's the beauty of discussion and what's even better is I know who you all are, so this is a discussion among friends, who see each other often, not some blind chat that has no faces or lives to it. I'm enjoying our exchange.
now JD I get where you are with this and yours is the more inclusive way, but in my opinion being inclusive of actions that in my mind weaken our resolve as a people, a country is not going over too well with me. yes this is my opinion about what is appropriate, but I ask you, who is better qualified to make these decisions for me than me?
Too often I see go along, get along or because it's not affecting me directly, I don't see what the big deal is. to my mind, I am watching the unraveling of years of etiquette, social values that quide how we treat each other, what is right and fair practice among humans. These notions are important always not just when its convinient or unavoidable.
and yes these are everyday actions that really do set the tone and trends for our nation and the world. I know change is constant and a part of evolving, but to change a large body of folk in any direction doesn't happen overnite, it comes from incremental slippage an erosion on a path to decay and for as long as I can remember, there has been this very debate we are having.
the greek classics were/are oral traditions way of discussing and imparting values, moral questions, and other complex human concerns in a way the people can personalize it, internalize it and struggle within themselves about it.
all this is evolution of our collective mind and well worth a discussion from time to time.
peace

This discussion speaks to the very heart of how we deal with one another as musicians. It has practical application there so this discussion is very important.

Ok, it makes a little more sense when you take the light off of Jamie Fox and shine it over the nation. Still, as debateable material there are way more variables than just what the camera has shown us. It could be a long time grudge, maybe they were exchanging words backstage, it could be a number of things. True, it still wasn't a proffessional way of handling it.
Thank you Necia for making more clear the issue you are addressing. The ongoing problem with people as a whole and not just this incident.
Here's a question.
Are our people getting worse in unison with higher descisions of the elite?[/color:5f0f468ecc] (example: promoting violence and songs that are strictly about what I have or how much better I am than you. A very simple example)
OR
Are people choosing to act this way in unison with each other?[/color:5f0f468ecc]
Hmmm, I'd say both.

I think its the slippery slope, a kind of evolution of the idea of "ME" first
I think there is a way to be for yourself and not do harm ie shame someone, diss them, take them out so you can get ahead. it is not dog eat dog out here unless of course we start believing it first and then acting on it second.
I am not trying to figure out where or who started it, my personal intention is that it will stop with me, that I will not be brainwashed into thinking that it takes someone else's demise for me to continue to shine.
I think in terms of our species, we have to pause from time to time to see where we wanna go instead of following, if following others will result in me not living the values and intentions I believe in.
when I watched jamie foxx do what he did, my question immediately was what was his intention in saying and behaving in this manner. Its hard to watch anyone with such potential, lack the self discipline to follow a humane course when that is what is called for if we are to not only survive but Thrive.
yes the guy was inappropriate in content and for reall he was not presenting himself in the best light. It was my first time seeing him, I probably am less likely to watch in again, did jamie foxx add to this guys demise, NO JAMIE FOXX ADDED TO HIS OWN DEMISE. HE MADE ME LESS INTERESTED IN HIM. I was already not interested in the other guy, he had turned me off from the start.
my point here is if jamie foxx had just let him be, ie kept his mouth shut, I would not have ended up thinking less of him as well.
This is where self discipline, values, intentions and understanding of yourself and others collides to become character in a person.
JD everyone makes missteps, poor judgements, lose their self control, but I have to say that I have been watching for greatness in jamie foxx and it is not there. every action equals to a general concept of a person and right now, I have little regard for jamie foxx, no matter how much money he makes, albums he records, shows he does, I am lost to him.
I have a list of folk that have proven by their very own actions who they are, whether I will listen, ponder or believe what they say and whether it has any merit to be considered or have any impact on me.
again, these decisions have been generated by me from within myself, and are based on what I have seen, heard, yes and felt.
think of relationships as bank accounts. when you meet someone you are watching to see how they act, what they say and then what they do. Now based on how they are able to do what they say, over time you begin to believe. sometimes they waver that is human, but somewhere in side of me there is a place that is tracing their reliability, their honesty, their ability to respond if needed, to watch how they treat others, to see what they are creating for themselves, family, friends and for the community.
based on these things over time I come to know their character, their core intention for themselves and other.
If all goes well, they are true to themselves and others more than not and this person I would count as friend. to the contrary, if they prove over time to lack the self discipline, character, understanding of how to use the power they have been affored by others, then this person I would council with, I would question their integrity, I would watch to see if they could respond by coming back into alignment with their true self I would give this lots of time for everyone has worth, and if I didn't see alignment I would not diss them I would remain hopeful but no fool myself about the character of this person. this is my right to think and process these such things, to make a decision and act upon that decision.
I do this because I have worth too and I believe in humanity in the larger sense, this does not mean I am weak or foolish or unrealistic. I am aware and choose to make my own decision about who I will align my energies with.
" a person is known by the company he keeps" and to thine own self be true.

First of all, yeah, like a bank. That sounds like my pops!
My father told me to hold people to "credit" the way a bank does. Treat them as they have no bond with you until they present the fact that they wish to have one. Once that happens, hold them to the words that they say.
As far as giving somone time goes... yes, I believe in that, because depending on your situation it can be hard to produce certain promises.
So, if everyone makes missteps, poor judgements, etc. Why can't this be one of those? What horrible did Jamie do before this? this is an honest question, I've never seen him behave this way before.
You have a list of people? You mean like "The book of Life"?
Our job is not to judge each other (sometimes I wish it was). Everyone is different. Jamie Foxx's actions as stated before, may be an outcry for his mother, or any number of things.
We need to not judge him by banning him from our lives, but to help him. After all, he's our brother LIKE IT OR NOT.
I don't watch anyone "waiting" for them to mess up. Why wait for the inevitable? Deal with it as it comes. Bill Withers "Lean on Me" - I might have a problem you'll understand.
My first response was my first because that's how I feel.
He's a human being with an extremely large burden. Make sure this is funny! You're the host!
I'm sorry I can't denounce his credibility because of one incident. Give it time. I try nothing more than to make the people around me feel welcome, but sometimes I loose it over things that have built up in my world. What's funny about that is my boys who know me, who took the time instead of molding some half baked opinion, are my dogs I've been through thick and thin with.

I've certainly lost a ton of respect for Foxx after seeing this clip.
I'm sure he could care less, but ultimately I think one's abilities are only as valuable as the way you treat people. He has some incredible talents, but to stifle someone who's shoes he once stood in is pretty horrible in my book.
I was never a big fan to begin with, but this certainly doesn't help much.
