The other day I watched this amazing footage from a 1976 Nina Simone concert in Paris. It got me thinking that I first took the time to listen to Nina Simone when Mos Def name-dropped her on "Rock N Roll". Of course, Talib takes it further by revisiting "Four Women/For Women" on Train of Thought. This got me thinking about other issues but the question I have for everyone is, [b:9b7c896e0e]what older artists/writers/etc have you sought out because they were name-dropped in a hip hop song?[/b:9b7c896e0e]
Here are the ones I can think of off-hand:
Donny Hathaway - name-dropped by Talib on "Beautiful Struggle"
Gregory Isaacs - name-dropped by Mos Def on "Ms. Fat Booty"
Nina Simone - various references by Mos and Talib
Fela Kuti - this isn't actually how I discovered Fela but Common's "Time Travelin' (A Tribute to Fela) probably introduced many
As far as writers/activists Dead Prez drops hella names (Huey P Newton comes to mind)
Who or what else have you discovered through hip hop?

Blackstar, alone, has opened my eyes to so much.
Nina Simone, Weldon Irvine, Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye"...
I've always had knowledge of these people, but I'd never sought their body of work out before. I'm glad I did.
