[quote:fe1da82937]STEVE PENN The Kansas City Star When it comes to the Historic 18th and Vine Jazz District, you have to take the bitter with the sweet. First let me tell you about the bitter. The district has suffered its first business casualty. The Red Vine Cajun Restaurant & Jazz House has died on the Vine. On Tuesday, a Jackson County circuit judge ordered that the building be turned over to the Jazz District Redevelopment Corp. The legal action stemmed from a lawsuit filed against the Red Vine a few months ago seeking back lease payments. The Red Vine now must vacate the premises by May 9. I was one of many people around town who had been pulling for Sebrina McCrainey, the owner, to make it through her financial bind. The restaurant opened on March 5, 2004. Now the court judgment ends any hopes she had of stabilizing her business and moving forward with new investors. “It’s so sad,” McCrainey said. “This is something I’ve built from its inception. Now we’re taking things out.” McCrainey mortgaged her home and spent her life savings on the venture. Yet she’s not the only one to lose in the venture. When Gary and Anita Maltbia heard of McCrainey’s troubles, the couple stepped forward as new investors. The couple provided $49,700 of their own money. That investment plus additional money they injected into the business is down the drain. “The way this has turned out has been a big disappointment to my husband and myself,” Anita Maltbia said. “We had interest as citizens of this community in the revitalization of that area. We believed it was an opportunity to fulfill the city’s dream and Sebrina’s individual dream.” Don’t count McCrainey out. She’s considering starting her business up at another location. And while the development phase still struggles, there are other more positive signs in the district. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum seems primed for a national designation. The legislation has passed the Senate and is awaiting consideration in the House. And construction and groundbreaking on the museum’s expansion into the Paseo YMCA is slated for August. We all still are feeling the effects of the Buck O’Neil Baseball Hall of Fame brush-off. Snubbing O’Neil seems only to have made him and the museum more popular. Meanwhile, the museum once again will team up this summer with Roadway Express for a traveling museum. Last year the tour went to 25 cities. This year it’s going to 30. “That project alone has made us the envy of virtually every museum out there,” said Bobby Kendrick, spokesman for the museum. The American Jazz Museum also is seeing a surge of interest. The Blue Room remains a popular spot. And a greater number of schools and tourists are taking the time to visit the museum. “Attendance is going great,” said Juanita Moore, executive director of the museum. “This time of year, we get really great attendance from the schools.” The Jazz Story Telling Program offered every other Friday for preschool kids also has become a popular activity. “These kids are in here dancing and scatting,” Moore said. “Things are going well. We want more people. But everybody wants more people. We don’t want it empty for one second.” As I’ve said before: Urban redevelopment can be hard and frustrating. Other times it’s extremely rewarding. And as a result, sometimes the news about it is bitter and sweet.[/quote:fe1da82937] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

bitter sweet...definitely a way to describe 18th and vine...and man, my father called me up in chicago to tell me that buck didn't get in the hall-of-fame...i was crushed...anyway though, good to see the museum doing well...it would be a dream come true to see 18th and vine go back to half of what it used to be

18th and Vine seems to have tried to hold on to the past without having a visible plan for the future...it's good to hold on the museums and the classic Jazz clubs...but that area used to be the SPOT! now it's like an old folks home...haha.. no no it's not really but i guess i miss Mardi-Gras's hip-hop night...and wish something could be done to make that a destination of today's jazzy hip-hop. The Red Vine is a shame but that place was run really strange. You couldn't talk to the owner without going through some middle lady who wanted to tax you for her connections and the service there was bad. What server asks you if the two dollars on the table is for her? I mean come on! I guess they are used to not getting tipped. I mean i had to ask for another water something is up right? Cup n Saucer is gone now too...and the Cane is bout to be brand new...so what's going to open up to be brand new to balance all these closings out? The Hangout is one new place holding cool functions...but where else? That spot downtown that used to be a huge gay bar? what's up with that spot? what's the deal?

Pruning process. We definitely need to seek out new venues. Time to scout and get on the horn...

i was looking at the red vine for starting a venue, but there's no real estate signs, so it leads me to believe the city dictates who goes in. which sounds tedious. if they'd fix those stupid looking painted facades, maybe some businesses would want to go there.

that whole project is tedious, mainly because the city is trying to ensure the success of any business that goes in there by putting them through the paces so stridently, that most businesses shy or run the opposite direction. the city seems to be trying to capitalize on that areas history to little or no avail. too bad we loose tax money locally and credibility nationally, maybe internationally.
