[quote:0fec841a9f]By Hearne Christopher Jr. The Kansas City Star HEARNE CHRISTOPHER JR./The Star Hurricane season is coming early. One of the Cowtown’s most fabled nightclubs is poised to change hands and re-enter the party stratosphere with a new thematic lease on life. That’s because Leawood entrepreneur Joey Crenshaw plans to become the Hurricane’s new majority owner. “I look at the Hurricane as an institution, not just for Westport but for Kansas City,” Crenshaw says. “But I don’t just want to come in as the old, stable Hurricane. There will be changes, but I hope people will stay with us as we make those changes. [b:0fec841a9f]We’re going after not only the Westport crowd but the Plaza crowd as well.”[/b:0fec841a9f] If all goes well, Crenshaw and partners will close the ’Cane for two weeks around Memorial Day and reopen the 300-plus capacity club with a freshened and re-jiggered interior. Improvements to its patio and a tres cool, new VIP Room downstairs will come later. [b:0fec841a9f]“It’s going to be harder to get in at the door, but we want to make sure people can get really good service,”[/b:0fec841a9f] Crenshaw says. “And our staff is going to be just unbelievable. We’re going to stay on the Hurricane’s track to a point, but the remodeling will appeal to a more upscale clientele.” [b:0fec841a9f]The old Hurricane’s hip-hop nights will not be a part of its new equation, Crenshaw says.[/b:0fec841a9f] The club will continue to book cover bands and national touring acts. Entertainment on the patio will be mainly DJs. The laid-back downstairs VIP area will feature bottle service and have its own entertainment, Crenshaw says. With the exception of special events such as the Super Bowl or major-label acts such as the All-American Rejects, the club will be closed Sundays and Mondays. [b:0fec841a9f]“I want to do events with other bar owners,” Crenshaw says. “We’re going to offer a limo service between other clubs like the Velvet Dog, Empire Room, Blonde, Sol and Karma.[/b:0fec841a9f] And we’re going to offer cab service, and the Hurricane’s going to foot that bill.” Stay tuned.[/quote:0fec841a9f] Gee, I wonder what all of this means? [/sarcasm]

This sucks. The Hurricane is known as a fucking dive, has been for bout three decades. Ask anybody, even people in Leawood. I don't see a lil sprucing up getting the Plaza yuppies up to their fucking bar. In the meantime, they're taking away one of the few consistent spots for performers in our scene to do our shit. I hate Leawood people. I know how this fucker thinks. 'Hmm, the Plaza's only three miles away, and damn, think about all that money we're missing out on. If we just make this shit like that shit over there...' UUUGGHGHGHHHH!!!!! I'm a kick this dude in his nuts!

For someone running the Hurricane to try and compete with places like Blonde and other places that cater to $250 bottle-service-ordering shmucks ...I just don't see that working out very well. At all. Like, why don't you just hang a "Closed" sign out there now? That's why places like the Drink die -- upscale Leawood fockers already know that they like Kona Grill and Blonde so that's where they go. The Hurricane totally had something going as one of the live-music dives in town. Now only the Brick and Davey's Uptown remain in Midtown (sorry if i'm forgetting any) and neither of them are all that hip hop friendly.

Who's really to blame? Us or them? When the majority of violence in westport has consistently been the "hiphop" crowd (fights, stabbings shootings, etc.). It seems like an endless war but this really shows how ignorant our culture can be. Last friday at the Hurricane two cats came in as Reach was performing. He announced, "if you buy a Reach cd you get a free dvd!". One of the dudes looked at me and said "did he say Rich, Rich the factor?" I said no, Reach." dude was like, "aww, fuck that!" There's an easy asumption to make out of this scenario. Those guys like music with more of a "thug" appeal. There's nothing wrong with that, but when you let the music get all up in your head and start persuading your actions, there is a problem. The question is, as vocal parts of the hiphop community what can we do on a local level to increase the peace in our scene? Think about it real hard... When's the last time you heard of a Rock, or Techno club having a dress code? I hate this shit, and eventually at this rate there won't be any hiphop spots in KC. This is why I believe that integrating the styles of local shows from concious to crunk can be a huge step. A lot of people are so ignorant that they honestly believe Kabal is being racist by not playing the top 40 hiphop anymore. When you're dealing with ignorance the best thing you can do is educate it, and I'm not saying that "thugs" in general are ignorant, but the majority of our communities club violence is coming from that scene. If we have different styles under one roof at least at that point we will have the floor for a period of time that night to address these issues. Imagine how many heads you could wake up if you started your show off saying something like this... "Wow, wasup people? Here we are in one of KC's last hiphop clubs (then explain why that is, and how that needs to change)".

it's a tough issue. Music can soothe the savage beast or bring out the beast in the savage. Alot of the problems that happen is because alot of people don't know about the crowd their working with. When you play fight club anthems and not studying the crowd while you play, you can cause an all out riot and in this market i have seen it happen many times. I've had encounteres with dj's who think its cool to play all the records back to back and when a brawl happens, they don't know how to handle the situation. Both masses can be appealed to, but it boils down to knowing how to work the audience your dealing with. It might suprize some peopble, but alot of the "thugged" out audience know talib, biggie, common or other artists. ALot of the "thug" dj's don't like to expose their audience to the music feeling that they would loose street cred, popularity or fame, but after all that is gone, what do you have.......your soul. It was wild some of the experiences, ive dealt with when i moved here being a dj. Its hard to fight for hip hop spots when you have other dj's in the city with the main goal is to thug out the place or appeal to the streets or undercut you because they feel your taking their shine away. That is one of the reasons why I backed away from the scene, i just got tired of dealing with old people set in old kc ways and people wonder why the city can't get respect in the industry. People say their doing a movement, but if your noth a part, then they blacklist you or talk trash or find ways to be snakes because you are doing more than they are. This city has alot of dj's but only a select few knows how to work with a diverse clientel that are not doing it for the fame, money, hoes, popularity and they know who they are. Its just a hard fight trying to prove that a hop hop crowd can be peaceful and knowing how to work them so they dont want to fight, they just want to go home and chill. If anyone wants to discuss this issue, [email protected] or pm me I will discuss more later peace

How about a peaceful protest in front of the Hurricane on some HipHop activist shit. Make it a big event you know, spread the word, let people know what's up, have some press there to cover it so more people will get the deal, and the leawood fucks will see there idea has some strong opposition to it, this is our fucking scene, our fucking neighborhood...leawood mindsets should stay in leawood. Hell, we could even get some volunteer acts to perform in that medium on Broadway. What are your thoughts on that?
  10. Apr 27, 2006 01:14am by Lucidialect
Flare, you're a crazy dude. I love your enthusiasm, but staging a protest, and disrupting traffic is no way to make these guys think they are doing the wrong thing by not letting us perform there anymore. Haha, really, we got to learn to integrate ourselves. Ionno, its a tricky situation, and when so much of our music is 'against the grain', its not really surprising that people outside our scene aren't behind it. I like the Hurricane the way its been, and I think these peoples' business ideas are going to ruin it for us, and for themselves. Nobody will legitimize in their own minds the Hurricane being a fine-drinking establishment, ya know? But, I also don't think we can bring about an activist movement to change their thinking.

Its sad to see the Hurricane change direction insomuch that the hiphop scene is losing yet another venue. However, I always though that place was kind of a dump and could use some renovation. The spot has potential beyond just being a dive...unfortunately this new cat seems to want to take it a direction that won't benefit anyone on here (well maybe some of the djs). In the end losses like this make room for new growth and opportunites other places. Shad and JD both made some great points about leanings of hiphop in KC outside this board and community it represents. Kabal's format change was brought on by a desire to STAY IN BUSINESS. The shit Eric & Siamack have gone through just trying to keep the doors open b/c of all the violence is unreal. You go to a place like The Record Bar that now has to put signs up in the bathroom saying "If you like HipHop shows at The Record Bar then don't vandalize our club"...thats not a good sign. Just those two examples, plus the general vibe of gangster rap in KC, shows hiphop has an uphill battle in KC proving to club owners that the music can both draw people and not cause problems.

Its wild. The stuff club owners have to go through dealing with hip hop clientel is stessfull. Its been situation in this market whenre i though i was going to have to fight my way out of the clubs. Then you add to the factor promoters who are out for the quick buck and look for ways to pimp hip hop because it attracts a "certain" clientel but don't want to deal with the urban demographic. It's like one hand washes the other, hip hop is popular when it brings in money to a club that is dying out, but when the money is gone, we are the first ones to be let go and blamed for the problems. Absolute greed corrupts the people. When greed is a factor in business, then bad karma comes around. Me and been have been through some things when i had his back with dealing with people ad venues dealing with the thugged out crowd. Its hard to stand up for hip hop when dealing with club owners bcause you deal with the negative stigma when you walk in the door. I have turned down venues because of the discussion against hip hop. I can relate my theory on music and the impact of people, but that was in a previous post. And about the issue with the hurricane, it seems cool to the owner because its trendy to own a bar to attract the "plaza" crowd which I don't understand because the guy who designed the plaza didn't mean for it to exclude everyone and be selective to people i.e. certain clubs. If you can't accept all demo's of people in a club that want to come an enjoy themselves then its not for me. peace shad

I agree ^^^^^^^^ You can't have it both ways, you can't want the dollars and then when you get them, you say ok enough, i made my quote for the year time to bring it back down. But my take on this is, will the plaza people really want to party with westport? I believe that if you go in with a motive to make money off someone with the attention of greed, you will not make money at all. Of course there are a few exceptions to the rules. I'm thinking of like johnny dare's place. He was really trying to get the people from the plaza and the johnson county people that listen to his show to come to his bar, but then they closed it becuse he couldn't draw in the people that he was trying to get. Trust me, as soon as they get in the place and figure that it's not drawing in the crowd that they want they will change their tune to make it more to what is really going on in the world. But i have always been on get your own and run it the way you want to. That way nobody can tell you how to run your house. That is why i look up to the places like the Peanut, because it reminds me of "The Beat Down", and "Mardi Gras". Becuse the crowd that cameto these places knew that this was put on by people that love to do this, and what ever comes from it, is more about peace, unity,Love and having fun( James brown, and africa bambatta) This should be more the reason to get your own, throw your own thing, you make the rules, don't let somebody else do it for you. PEACE "KIZ" sorry it it seems like i'm talking in circles. LOL

I've been at The Hurricane for a while and it looks like I'm out of a job! Damn! I don't know what this guy is planning on doing with the place but he hasn't told anyone who works there anything so we are all assuming that we'll be out of work soon. About Hip Hop... It's not like there was anything going on there regarding rap music in the first place. We haven't had a Hip Hop show there for quite a few months until this last Friday and to be honest, aside from the people that I see all of the time nobody new showed up. Nobody ever really shows up at shows there for the most part so it's kind of a moot point. DJ Just recently started spinning underground and 90's rap on Tuesdays and it's been dead so who REALLY cares what happens to Hip Hop at The Hurricane. This guy will probably throw a bunch of money into the place to make it nice and we'll see what happens. I don't think it will work but I hope for the new owner's sake that it does well. We'll find a new place to rock at! Trust, I already have something in mind. Peas (I'm SALTY Ya'll), -Vrt

I think that the hurricane could do with a makeover. In the 90's it was actually a pretty cool spot. It never really has come back from that(with the exception of what Just did, but that is different because that was mostly top forty stuff). There is such a stigma attached to it now that so many people just wont go there. PERIOD. Nice people too. What I'd like is to find out what they are going to do with all the paintings on the panels throughout the bar. Those are pretty fresh. Its nothing like what they did to the grand emporium. That was a real crime against kansas city culture and history. I'm still upset about that.

I've been spitting verses at the 'Cane since I first turned twenty-one. And through and through its been some of the lamest crowds, but one of the funnest places to rock. Generally, you wind up with all your crew, local fam and a few straggling drunks who love what you're doing. Its been a great place to practice I guess is what I mean. I'll just miss it... even though I'm not totally convinced its going to totally change. We can just start dressing like Kanye, hella preppy and they'll let us in. Ha, haha, ha...uugghhh....
  36. May 6, 2006 06:24am by crimestoppers - I'M NOT A BUNNY, AND YOUR NOT A FROG SO LETS NOT JUMP TO ANY CONCLUSIONS
No doubt Reach...It will be missed in its current incarnation. The Hurricane has had some amazing bomb live shows. Good times. Tonight I saw a butt-load of middle aged rockers lined up outside of the cane just after I made the previous post. I hope that the new owner doesn't cater to that crowd as much as the hurricane under present management has of late. Don't get me wrong, I like to rock out as much as the next guy or girl does but it'd be nice to see some quality hip hop shows at that venue again and regularly. Local and Underground Legends alike. I seriously doubt they will, I'm just dreaming. Keep the dream alive right, Even though sometimes It feels like we aren't gonna ever get it no matter how hard people try in KC. I like places that are corny and cheesey though... away from the pretensions that exists in local "scenes" cus it is nice to get away and rub elbows with normal ordinary people too. So even if the hurricane gets like that...I'll still go there on occasion just because, it is the hurricane. It would take freakin Rakim, Jay Z, Naz, and Common in one show to get me to go to the freakin Grand Emporium again. That was criminal to me. I bet you guys what happens is that it fails under the new ownership and turns back into a gay bar again. I'll bet you twenty bucks. (Not that they're is anything wrong with that)
