Topic: pet peeve: bad rhymes

i don't think some people understand how a rhyme works.
just because the last syllable in a word rhymes doesn't mean the two words rhyme. it is more important that the last [i:4dc063eb9a]emphasized[/i:4dc063eb9a] syllable rhymes. i had a hard time telling my girlfriend that "monacle" and "barnacle" don't really rhyme. i was just listening to this uffie song where she tries to rhyme "miami" and "saint louie"... just because they end in an 'ee' sound doesn't make it work.
it is also more important that the vowel sounds rhyme than that the consonants rhyme. i think some people try to choose words that are similar... when there are plenty of words that are pretty dissimilar (they share no consonants) that have vowel rhymes that make them work fine.
yeah, there are dirty rhymes, and i guess you can pull it off a lot of times if your accent allows...
i also lose a little respect for an mc every time they rhyme a word with itself. i'm sick of entire verses ending in "nigga" or "and shit"...
of course, rappers these days are stretching it if they use words with more than one syllable.

i've noticed more so a trend for mainstream east coast rappers to rhyme the same word with each other, or people who have adopted an east coast flow, like the new lil wayne...though sometimes it can work if you rhyme a different word right in front of the repeating word...but overdone and it gets really wack, but i've notice some rappers not even use a different word before the repeating and it drives me crazy listenin it sounds so horrible...i'd say it works best when the words can just have different meanings but sound the same like when jay-z said...
"Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense
But I did five mill' - I ain't been rhymin like Common since
When your cents got that much in common
And you been hustlin since, your inception
Fuck perception go with what makes sense"
...in my opinion that works pretty well...and phism what you said about "monacle" not rhymin with "barnacle" that's what a lot of my friends have always refered to as a "half rhyme"...and generally half rhymes just don't flow as good...but accent (like you mention) and simply the way you say it can have a lot of effect

i think messing with the meanings of the words is a little different. that's more of a play on words and is intentional... homonyms, though, are still a little questionable to me, and it depends on how you do it.

oh, i should have left a disclaimer... i love juelz santana's shit for this exact problem. nigga says the most unnecessary, ridiculous shit that you shouldn't be allowed to say and still have a record deal. and he doesn't even seem like a crack baby like other shitty rappers (hint: whaaah!)... but he still does it. fame is hilarious.

I think a lot of rhymes like barnicle and monacle have a lot to do with your regional accent. Being from the midwest our tone and inflection is pretty flat... but if you are from let's say boston... they would say barnicle but it would sound more like bonalce...
Either way.. an emcee should never write rhymes based on how the words look or sound in your head. my stuff never comes out sounding like I think it will when I have to write in silence.. which is why 90% of it sounds so akward.
There are so many combinations of things people can use.. i say sour rhymes and poor scheme are responsible for the mild downfall of the artistry... most rappers rhymes are predictable. very few suprise me with something innovative anymore.

I'm impressed when someone can make two words that clearly don't rhyme, rhyme. Big Boi rhymes "Batman" and "Robin"...that shit's amazing!

Black Thought is a repeat offender in regards to this topic, and not in a good way. I personally think this style is more pervasive now thanks to Dipset mania (Cam'ron has been using this technique forever), but I have to agree with Aeon in that when an MC utilizes unusual inflection (as the result of an accent or otherwise), damn near anything can rhyme AND still sound good.
