A summer jobs program for Kansas City youth will put 175 students to work in
City government this summer. The comprehensive Summer Youth Employment Program is open to in-school Kansas City youth ages 14 through 18.
The program was initiated by City Manager Wayne A. Cauthen and passed by the City Council May 19.
“The City of Kansas City believes it is our responsibility to implement and develop our young people to foster them to become successful citizens,†Cauthen said. “Therefore, it is imperative that we create a comprehensive summer youth employment program.â€
Cauthen recommended hiring a minimum of five youth per department. Each department is responsible for interviewing eligible candidates. After candidates are selected, the Youth Advocacy Office will spearhead the orientation and training sessions prior to placement. The students will work 20 hours per week for eight weeks, beginning June 13 and concluding Aug. 5.
This summer youth employment program will assist the City:
–– Create and develop positive mentoring relationships
–– Provide an excellent opportunity for youth to gain varied job skills
–– Implement positive outlets and resources.
Applications for the Summer Youth Employment Program may be obtained from the Human Resources Department on the 12th floor of City Hall, 414 E. 12th St. The deadline to submit applications is May 27. For more information, call Thalia Cherry, manager of the Youth Advocacy Office, (816) 513-1378.
