hey man what's up , i just have a question that is pretty deep. deep question--> "why are you doing a show at a church?" well, not really a show but a benefit maybe?"<---(not so deep question) i don't know what you are getting out of it and it is none of my business.

Church is as good a place as any isn't it? I never regard the venue itself. I'd play a 4H meeting if they'd let me. It's just something I love to do.
  4. Apr 26, 2006 04:49pm by SamB
yea man- the venue is everything in an artist. especially when it is played at a place of religion. i am not really knockin' on your style to chose what kind of rapper you are: i would just not really promote something like that here (religion). this is America and we are free to say whatever w want to. but i really don't think hip-hop and religion should touch one another. Even though i know it happens all to often.

[quote:b1f51b29de]but i really don't think hip-hop and religion should touch one another. Even though i know it happens all to often. [/quote:b1f51b29de] Man that is a bold statement. I know religion has run a lot of people wrong, but to cut off spirituality from hip-hop would take away so much. Some of my favorite emcees are very religious or spiritual, and many don't even practice the same faith as me. Some cats will exploit religion and that is whack, but still I would hate music if people didn't talk about what they believed, and just dropped mindless junk. If you take soul out of music then what do you really have anyways? Keep open minds and hearts, and always be willing to learn. One love.

so can other forms of music touch religion? just not hiphop?...hiphop isn't the work of the devil is it?...cus that would worry me...please enlighten us and show us how much you truly know about our culture and music...oh, and religion...
  7. Apr 27, 2006 04:04pm by SamB
alright dropjaw, so if i read your statement correctly, you like the spirituality in hip-hop? and with out it, songs would be filled with "mindless junk". alright i think you might just referring too one sector of hip-hop my friend, what about the beatboxers, any spirtiual beatboxers in the real hip-hop sceane? do not include those assholes from lawrence "measurexmeasure" not hip-hop. what about the turntablist? do they put a feeling of spiritualness or religious statements in their music? it seems like some DJ's just use sounds and samples. Don't get me wrong but i know there are some religious DJ's/breakers/beatboxers/artist/emcee's that speak of the myths that they believe in, which is fine, because i do not listen to their music. I also make a decision to listen to music that does mention the subject of religion. I pick and choose. call me a hypocrite but i would rather listen to some religions over others. i would rather listen to rapper spittin' rhymes about how 85%of the world is the cattle and 10% of the world exploit them over a rapper spittin' about jesus. i would pick to listen to Wu-Tang (which i do everyday) over any of these chumps on this website http://www.inthabeginning.ca/mc.htm as far as credentials for religion, both of my parents are Catholic School teachers. yea, and i went to Catholic school from 3rd to 10th grade. i put up with a lot of bullshit and i know how religion effects society and even our hip-hop culture, it's doing it right now. i just mentioned this in this forum to get people thinking a little bit.

[quote:7d30cf54ee="SamB"]i would just not really promote something like that here (religion).[/quote:7d30cf54ee] Each is his own I suppose... I believe that music should be a reflection of who you are though. If you happen to be religious... That should have a place in your music. I am. And it does. [quote:7d30cf54ee]this is America and we are free to say whatever w want to. but i really don't think hip-hop and religion should touch one another. Even though i know it happens all to often.[/quote:7d30cf54ee] Whoever said you can't be religious AND open-minded? I am. The event was about tolerance of LGBT lifestyles. The church was awfully gracious in hosting it. Most churches wouldn't have. It should be noted that I never expressed or outlined my religious beliefs at any point last night. Neither did anyone else. The event had virtually nothing to do with religion. Just happened to be held in a church. Don't get it twisted though. I'd play a church in a heartbeat. I have. I grew up in church homie. How can I deny that part of me in my material? The best music comes from personal experience. That was my experience growing up. You'll always hear that in my music.

The Rap genre has and always will be expressive. Of culture and of religion. That's a part of its legacy. Some of the greatest emcees to ever walk the Earth have infused their belief system into their art. You can't deny that part of Rap's legacy.
  10. Apr 27, 2006 09:32pm by SamB
nah i am not denying. i am not hating, i am just provoking some thought. i just wanted to know why do something (like a hip-hop event) at a place of worship? i agree that the cause is good. The event is about tolerance of LGBT lifestyles which is a topic in modern culture that is still controversial. So this event seems to fit me except for the church part of it. i am a firm believer that religion is something that just separates even more people.

so SamB, i'll admit that i misread you a bit as to what you were infering...but i personally don't think it's right to bash all churches and lump them all together in the sense that they divide more than unite...i will say though, that just like pretty much any other establishment by mankind, the church in general could use some improvement, just like our government...but the way i see it, Reach doing his thing at a church, actually makes the church look better, rather then making hiphop look worse...
  12. Apr 28, 2006 06:53am by phism
i personally don't think anyone or anything should be religious, and can still have plenty of conviction, feeling, and depth. with probably a greater grasp on empirical reality. but as far as a venue, do your thing, play wherever you can/want. p.s. reach, i can probably hook you up with that 4H show if you're interested in rocking Higginsville, MO any time soon. hip-hop hoedown!

[quote:b2b5400702="SamB"]i am a firm believer that religion is something that just separates even more people.[/quote:b2b5400702] it is exactly your belief about religion that separates you from others. no biggy just wanted to point that out. if hiphop is big enough to be worldwide, its big enough to entertain all religions as a coming together process.
  14. Apr 28, 2006 07:10am by phism
there is a good point there... religion is the top source of violence in history. hip-hop is second. just kidding.

yo Reach. I commend you for rocking a show like this. I believe that this kind of progressive attitude show be more prevalent in Hip-Hop culture.

It wasn't a Hip Hop event. I was the only Rap act there. The others were a range of Rock, Electronica and Alternative. [quote:a5efe13725]i agree that the cause is good. So can Rap. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

We should have a rap battle with emcees from different religious or non-religious backgrounds and call it holy-wars. Oh and then kill everyone at the end.
