whaddap kc! I really need you guys help. I need to know everything you know about MIDI. Man, so....im here in TX back in school for my music business degree and working on an Audio Engineering and these teachers are crazy. Your first MIDI and Audio classes they teach you all the terms, no hands on, and then they throw you at the boards and software and ish. For all the guys in my class its easy because they know this stuff before enrolling in the classes. I enrolled because I needed electives...and then I fell in love with it. ANyways. Im too selfconscious to ask for help and most of you I know personally so its easier here...like asking friends i have a little bit of background with real instruments. I just learned about this 16 bars and 8/9 bars etc whatever...i know you all are probably laughing at this point. is there anything else i need to know when it comes to making tracks in MIDI?!?! man, mixing other peoples live ish on the consol is sooooo much easier than this shit...and thats hard! Here are 2 MIDI tracks. They are um really bad so your honesty wont hurt me only help. any things i NEED to know...whats the beautiful secrets to this that you all have? iis there like a format im suppose to follow or something ...im feeling super lost. Its not mixed yet. I think theyre hip hop beats.....or something. Ionno, ive been around such a diverse crowd of people here..ok im rambling the second one there is a chord missing before the breakdown. i think i snipped it on accident thats why it just jumps right in all crazy um i think on one of the tracks the other track bled onto it. ionno what happend...guess i made a mistake when burning them from the program http://s32.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=02GBCB5EPIGCF3KP8ATJG7W0ID http://s32.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1K9DD425MGH4X0EI6NLY27KXO6

ayo! I know some of the sikestyle cats can help you out more. Midi isn't audio, midi is a music language that tells the machine or virtual instruments in your case, what notes to play how hard to play the note, the sustain, etc. etc. hmmm, you should just pick up midi for dummies or some cliff notes style book or google it it's pretty simple at the basic level

My homie graduated from full sale and kicked me down copies of the important parts of the books. Also, before I got my ASR most of my production was all midi. Are you trying to figure out midi sync, dump, channels, slave/master, command, import/export...?

thanks JD for the help but I got all that theres a miscommunication here and im not exactly sure why but its all been taken care of. I didnt realize that fruityloops, acid, and reason is not set up like the program we use and i assumed it was. They're purely audio sequencers w/o the MIDI integration. ~?~ maybe it can be integrated but guess no one really does from the response.

I use Fruity Loops and it can be used with MIDI. I haven't tried yet, but I know it can be done. You can either use MIDI controllers for controlling FL's internal generators, or use FL for recording other MIDI instruments ie keyboards and such. I haven't tried it yet, but it's possible...

Any MIDI device in the world can be hooked up to these programs and used accordingly. As a matter of fact, do people even use these programs without doing that? why? if you have a more specific question you can email me, i go to school for this stuff. [email protected]

yeah but it's way funner to tap out your beats on a keyboard/drum pads than just using mouse clicks. it's all personal preference though.

I'm totally feeling you on that...I am about to get a midi controller. Maybe a Trigger Finger or that new MPD 24.

hey rich, johnny...def. hit you up some time because questions often come up that by the time i get into class again i forget...you too barnyard. thank you. like this one.... we have a project due soon and its not neccessary but I thought it would be fun to try to do and would allow for more creativity. i asked my teacher outside of class and he just indicated I needed to stick around for midi 3 and 4. money hungry suckers. lets say you take a sample from a record. doing whatever i need to do with it in protools i think i pretty much have down but then how do i get it to my sequencer software (which is Digital Performer if you happen to be familiar with it) im sure its pretty much the same proceedure between the programs. this will help me too with fl studio 6 too because when i have free time, which isnt very often, im trying to teach myself that program at home. what about assigning a sound to a key on the controller. what equipment does your school have you on Barnyard? where are you going?

MIDI is often misunderstood. Detail mentioned that it is data and doesn't make sound...JD got the definition correct. Some things I noticed that are misunderstood....two or three people mentioned not using MIDI, but more than likely do. Anyone that uses a sampler or keyboard with a sequencer is using MIDI regardless if it's hooked to a computer, anyone that uses a computer without a keyboard is still using MIDI, anytime someone wants to hook up multiple keyboards, samples, computers, or any combination of MIDI devices it can be snyched via MIDI. Does that help much? I have no clue, but it does help to understand exactly what it does/can do.

Amazing things have been done with MIDI. I can't remember if this was a university or solo study, either way it opens the mind to vast possibilities of MIDI programing. Musucians incorporated MIDI controllers in toys and let kids come in and play with them. The different motions caused by each personality and emotion produced a different sound. Basically the childrens playing habits composed music.

[quote:b4848d60e4]what equipment does your school have you on Barnyard? where are you going?[/quote:b4848d60e4] I'm in the audio engineering school at KCKCC. I can't say exactly how to put your sample on a specific key on the controller, only because i'm not familiar with your digital performer software. in most apps, all you do is load your sample up on a track (let's say Track 1, which would also be MIDI channel 1), then you configure your MIDI controller to be on MIDI channel 1, then they should be working together. Every software is different though, so it might be easier said than done. If you and I were in front of a computer and a midi keyboard, I could explain in no time. However, just explaining it here is kinda hard.

It's how they automate stage lighting a lot of the time. I even heard of one guy automating his home (using midi to control lights going on and off when he enters/leaves the room, temperature control, etc.). Amazing stuff really.
