Topic: EVERYONE likes to dance (Discussion)

There is an issue that needs to be addressed...
All kinds of people like to dance in a variety of ways to rap music.
Bboys and Bgirls form circles, and that's wonderful. They work hard to practice, and are skilled and an important part of the hip hop scene.
At the same time, there are many people who arent a part of the culture of breakdancing etc. and they like to dance as well.
*Sometimes they interrupt circles and attempt to faux-breakdance, which is understandably annoying to the bboys/bgirls.
*On the other side, sometimes people just want to dance and there is nowhere else to dance since the circle may take up the entire floor.
[b:a07f6cd2cf]I know people on both sides of the issue are aware of this situation and I'd like to hear both sides.[/b:a07f6cd2cf]
If there is an understanding, events can flow smoother and without bias.
I'm a fan of people enjoying themselves, and
there can be more enjoyment by all if these things are dicussed.

this is a good topic...
Style Girls vs. B-Boys was good battle last month at the record bar...hah..
i think with a big enough dance floor this isn't a problem..
with tight places like the Hangout and Jillys that was always an issue. Usually they just went back and forth trading songs...it really depends on where the dj goes with the selection too....if the selector is playin' Snoop it's more likely that everyone else is going to get up and dance...and if you play Eric B the bboys are gonna wanna dance...
it's tricky mix...but it can be done and when pulled off correctly...it's magic!
hahah
peace

yeah. there's not enough space sometimes.
i don't really have much music that b-boys can dance to when i play out, so i always feel a little weird when they show up and i have about 5 appropriate records.
i kind of just think that people should take turns. nobody really wants everything to be the same all night, so i guess i think if there's breaks or electro or something, the b-boys should go for it, or if the dance floor's not hot enough on its own. i don't know, i guess you always just have to judge the situation and see what'd be good for the atmosphere.

good points.
phism, I understand, I'm a slow music guy most of the time lately. And its always a balance of maintaining an atmosphere.
To expect that a certain type of music should or shouldn't be played is a losing battle, unless the night has been designated as such.
- Apr 6, 2006 05:44am by phism
i think a lot of people can't dance to slow music.
drunk white college people, anyway.
- Apr 6, 2006 05:58am by MILES - http://www.MilesBonny.com/ Location: KCK
of course, but the thing is, sometimes I'm not trying to make people dance. Other times I am. I will be doing a few things at the Hangout this month, both time, I will ease into dance-able music, but othertimes, I'd prefer that people do what they do, sit, stand, lay, whatever.
- Apr 6, 2006 06:05am by phism
sorry, i should have been more specific, i prefer to play slower shit too, and i wish people could dance to it because it's uh, sexier. ::cough::
but they would require rhythm for that.
it's nice to play a party and you're down to the last 3 or 4 girls that still wanna dance and you can throw on that sultry business.

Great topic!
Obviously, B-Boys are an important part of the musical culture we all belong to. That being said, as a dj who plays for a variety of crowds there is a certain balance I look for on the dancefloor.
Like Sike said, at spots like Jillys or the Hangout, the floor is so cramped already that having a circle pretty much closes out the dancefloor to everyone but the B-Boys. I'm sure the crowd really enjoys watching people in the circle, but ultimately my job as a dj is to get EVERYONE dancing...not just the BBoys. If there isn't room to just dance, its a little disconcerting to me. I understand BBoys take a lot of pride in what they do and put a LOT of time into practicing, but the dancefloor is for everyone.
At spots like The Record Bar where there is plenty of room, things are usually fine. At some point the circle evaporates and everyone just dances, which is great.
The only time I have really gotten irritated with BBoys is downstairs at Kabal. There is one cat (don't know who he is) who is really fucking aggressive. Multiple times he tried to form a circle at peak hour (ie packed floor) and when people don't move he starts top rocking and kicking people. I'm sure he wants it to come off as accidental, but its obvious it isn't. That shit is way uncalled for.
Just my 2 cents.

i see a lot of ppl watch the b people dance and feel really intimidated by their moves and they say the don't wanna dance cuz they aren't that good...
I think they shouldn't be worried about what the look like gettin' down..
everyone looks a bit silly dancin' everynow and then...haha.
it's all good and both styles of dancing can for sure co-exsist on the same floor thoughout the night.

this is a good topic miles...an you're pretty much right on in your observations so i'll try to assist from a bboys perspective. as for interuping the circle i speak for me when i say that if a person is feelin the music sincerely then by all means get in an rep. the soul cannot be contained an truth be told i love to see that in people. but as you said its those faux breaking an actin a fool for the sake of spectacle that i have a problem with. jus flip the script how would an emcee feel if there was a live ass open mic an sum idiots got on there an started shouting like banshees.or sum one managed to get behind the 1&2's an started jackin with the volume faders an scratchin like a 1 yr olde.once again its a matter of sincerity an idiocy.
*On the other side, sometimes people just want to dance and there is nowhere else to dance since the circle may take up the entire floor.
that's a tough one an i do feel for those in that situation.i can only hope that the venue could accomodate both or as someone suggested take turns. it really also depends on the dj too. if a real dj who knows music is playin there shouldn't be a problem. for instance if he were to play sum james brown chances are we will wild out an take the floor. on the other hand if he or she were to play sum zhane or tone, tone, tone then that's where the regular folks would get their shine an we play our position. its really a matter of balance as i've stated before sumthin for everyone can pretty much please evryone. there are those who will still try to break an that has nothin to do with the dj but with a matter of ego. i call them spotlighters. an as with the regular party peeps they get on my nerves too. but that's rare. i suggest people come to kabal this sat to see how its done although it is a big club we all share the upstairs pretty well.

Man im glad you brought that up miles. It needs to be talked about. I deal with that issue all the time when I play. Do i cater to the breakers or do i cater to everyone in the crowd. Im not gonna please everyone so im like if your mad im trying to rock everyone, not a select few. if you get mad because im not playing a certain style well music is universal, and people can rock to anything. I try to cater to everyone, but if i dont get the response from the people, i would flip styles in a heatbeat. People are feeling the music then i say rock on. It's a respect issue, but music comes from the soul and im trying to touch the soul of everyone. My biggest influence is Wattstax and seeing Rufus Thomas rock the crowd so hard that the barricades cant hold back the soul he is giving the people. Thats how I feel when i play and when i see the circle gets interupted. If i can touch the soul of one person and move the crowd like rakim says then the job is done
