Leadbelly (1976) HIP HOP HISTORY Gotta give props to Three 6 Mafia for snagging an Oscar Sunday night at the 78th Academy Awards for their bangin’ song, “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from the movie “Hustle & Flow.” After spending years wrecking the underground rap scene, the Memphis based group became the first rappers to perform at the ceremony and got the stale proceedings crunk with a lively performance that was totally bananas. However, what was up with the interpretive dancers? And didn’t know that Taraji P. Henson could actually blow for real. The group delivered the most rousing and genuine acceptance speech. Their exuberance even had host Jon Stewart chuckling. “Why are these guys the most excited people here tonight,” he quipped. KING OF THE MIC DJ Fresh is at it again. The legendary turntablist kicked off his “American Idol” like talent compition for rappers last week. Fresh is searching for the best emcee in Kansas City and will have a “King of the Mic” competition each month. The championship round will take place this summer. Yeah Joe Good and Mile Bonny are working on solo projects but the two haven’t split. The pair, best known for their “Biscuits & Gravy” CD, are doing what they describe as “solo business.” Good has taken advantage of his hiatus from his partner of five years by winning the first round of DJ Fresh’s King of the Mic competition. SHAWN EDWARDS: Why enter a contest? JOE GOOD: It’s about DJ Fresh. When Fresh does things he brings the whole city out. I wasn’t necessarily tryin’ to win. I just wanted to network. SE: What does the win mean? JG: I ain’t going to Disneyland but now I have a little bit more credibility. SE: Who is going to win “American Idol”? JG: I don’t know I ain’t been really watchin’. SE: Everyone watches “American Idol.” JG: Maybe the white dude. You know the one that looks like Gomer Pile that was singing the Stevie song. SE: Favorite hip-hop album? JG: Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic.” SE: 2Pac or Biggie? JG: 2Pac! He was so much more than a rapper. He was the voice of our generation.
