what do you find difficult or find yourself doing that you don't like? - if i dj too close together, i find that i end up playing a lot of the same shit each time because it's whatever i'm feeling at the moment. just gotta hope it's not the same people listening i guess. - practicing. i think i've grown out of that basement mood... maybe just because my basement is freezing and working makes me never want to stand up again... but i think also because it's not really the same without an audience. i should probably work on my scratches and all that... plus a lot of the music i buy isn't really for casual listening, so after marking down the bpm for things i buy, i don't usually listen to it. - finding that line between girly enough to get the girls dancing, and too feminine to where it's all white hipster chicks dancing with each other and everyone else considering suicide. and by the same token, avoiding things that are too hard. - $$$.

Thats understandable, but you are going to cause yourself a lot more problems with all this deep thoughts shit. Let be honest. Most peoples first 'real' (ie non house party) gigs go pretty bad. Its just like when you lose your virginity. The first part of 'paying your dues' mostly involves embarrassing yourself in public. I'm sure you will do fine. Just don't get to fucked up before you play. Heres a little story on one of my first public gigs. ...I played this HUGE house party in Lawrence years ago and I was so fucking nervous I took a Xanax right before I was supposed to go on...well I had a few beers before this and the Xanax kicked in right as the previous dj was finishing. Knocked me on my ass. Literally...I could barely stand up. My boy ended up having to mix a couple records in while I regained my composure. I trainwrecked the shit out of my first mix then proceeded to tear the roof off the place and get asked to sign girls titties. True story (except for the titties part)

keep it simple and remember the few songs that you REALLY want to play (for yourself, if no one else) rather than trying to remember every song that might work for that one moment that might happen if the floor is less than 47% willing female when that particular song is preceeded by huey lewis and the news on the fourh friday of an odd numbered month...and you just don't wan to fucking play 'like a prayer,' 'pussy control,' or 'gold digger.' i got so overworked the new years before last playing at abe n' jakes that i drank my nervous state into black-out dj and was too drunk to announce the countdown, reject strange drinks, or to tell girls that they aren't supposed to be rubbing their beef curtains all over the equipment when im trying to switch songs...when i finally realize what's going on im at some party with a guy named big L that took over the mic to emcee half the night after giving me drinks...smoking pot and being too stoned to move while they kissed each other in between hits...all the while i couldn't help thinking about how i just needed to fix the pitch fader when the song was playing that fast and everyone stopped dancing and started hating the dj...it was wierd-don't think too much...if all else fails play michael jackson-everyone in kansas LOVES michael jackson-anyone that tells you any different is a liar
