Topic: Non-profit all-ages venue...

i'm working on a non-profit all-ages youth center/music venue.... i mentioned it on lawrencehiphop for anyone who frequented that. it will be modeled after places like El Torreon, the Spitfire, Gee Coffee, etc... all my friends are punks, so i grew up in that environment and i think it's what a lot of kids need, especially the ones who aren't into sports or clubs or the types of things offered by school.... if kids want to be into raw underground music that isn't supported by the mainstream, we'll have a place for them to go. so, since i personally love hip-hop in addition to my other influences, i definitely want to get the hip-hop scene involved because i think there are a lot of similarities... i want to bring back the sort of unity that's been lost over the years...punks, skins, hip-hoppers, rudeboys, metalheads, whatever, it's all underground to me. and i think that having an all-ages place is crucial to any of these cultures, because 21+ and 18+ shows cut off maybe half of the fans and really cripple the possibility of a self-sufficient scene with the energy of youth and experience of age... anyway, i just thought i'd let y'all know that this was sort of in the works, albeit not very far along since i'm busy with college. i've talked to beth at the creative mind community arts center, and they're doing a lot of the things we were wanting to do, except that our main focus will be to have live music almost every night, and the workshop type activities in the afternoons... so since we have some goals in common, i'd like to work with them a lot. anyway, i'd like to see if anyone here has any thoughts or suggestions... especially if you think there is any unique method that needs to be used to represent and integrate hip-hop into the plans. i have a whole section dedicated to it on my forum if you want to check that out. it's mostly me talking to myself: http://www.gangmembers.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=15

I think it's a cool idea and hope you get it going. Things like that are important.

Definitely dope. My only suggestion would be to keep the youth involved by lettin them have an equal amount of nights as any special guest. If they have thier own band/group its critical that they know how to flyer, where to flyer and most important... How to rock a stage. ONE... JDFlow

Hey, i'm avidly working on furthering the events and widening the scope of what we do at the Creative Mind Community Art Center. I'm definately down to have some All ages Punk-Hip Hop-any music music events happen in the theatre space and to provide a youth friendly venue. Right now, we have an ongoing Friday night film series, an every other Thursday & Sat night series as well. Check under upcoming events for the film and event list or hit us up at :[email protected] We are also working with Reach, Scoe, Bro-Mo, Mike Boogie & NRG to provide an afterschool Hip Hop curriculum The HIP HOP ACADEMY at the Center hopefully beginning in April! Good luck with your youth work, get at me! Jeremy - Lofiyah
