Topic: My Middleground Weekend Experience
- Oct 7, 2009 12:34am by MIDDLEGROUND
First off let me tell you all something. I have so much love for Kansas City and the surrounding area.
Here in Wichita everything is so small to the point that doing something ANYTHING is completley pointless.
Carbon and I came up on Friday primarily because we needed a weekend release from work/school/family/bullshit and we run smack dab into THIS!

now we have First Fridays in Wichita. I think almost everyplace that wants to have some sort of "status" does. But Ive never seen anything like this.
Literally we walked out of our venue at the Bridgeport church to see Reach and the Soul Providers getting down. And not even 10 feet from them the cats throwing fire et. al. MIND BLOWN! Watching this footage like seriously makes me appreciate the fact that I was there at that moment even more.and before I forget I have to shout out Ms Watts. on the video/photo reel. Seriously that is so well done and really captures the essence of what was going down/ Thank you and please keep doing what you do!
From there we went to the czar bar to hang with the homies Sku and Brent (sorry man I still find myself calling you candlewax LOL) It is so refreshing to go to a bar or a club and hear music being played well. Id go to a country and western bar and listen to garth brooks all night if its played right. Many adult shenanigans took place that night so ill leave it at that. My urge to everyone is to tell a friend to check these guys out. As Mr. Lawnge says HURRY UP AND GET A SCOOP BEFORE ITS GONE!
SATURDAY !! - http://vimeo.com/6897131
This past weekend and February are the only times I have been to a jam in at least 4 years. I have never had so much fun at one as I did this past weekend. #1 I actually decided to dance. But #2 The jam was more than just a jam. It was a culmination of hard work and dedication that my really good friend Alfredo Montez has perspired through.
I know many of things have been said about him. He may not be the most popular kid on the playground. But one thing you can never EVER take away from the man is he has done more for the KS/MO Bboy scene than any combination of people combined PERIOD!
It was really good to see old friends like Jamestilla,Plus, Bam and Huck.Sug & Brent whats up! It was really good to meet new friends such as the kids from Manhattan. It was also really good to see new friends that I have recently met and havnet built much or a relationship with as I hope that soon changes Leo , J Wrecks
I remember being in Lawrence when there was NO ONE but Buggin Out and us Wichita kids dancing. Now to see where it has grown so many new people. Whether they are new to the scene or just didnt know other heads were dancing as well.
I was really happy to see the honoree's get their just dues.
Necia - We havent had much time to talk and that is no fault of yours. I hope that changes in the future. You have done so much for KC area BEFORE this site. I'm really happy for you.
Joc Max - Words cant express what its like to listen you spin. Like my guy fredo would say If you know Joc then you know there really isnt anything to say. HOpe all is well and we get to get down with you soon.
Rhythm Kings. - First off peace to my guy Jigsaw. I remember seeing this brother get down at the Bulldog battles and feeling so moved by him dancing. This man has been putting it down for a good minute and deserves every bit of praise he gets.
Brent. we also havent had much time to talk. But from watching you dance I feel like I know you so well. But thats what we as dancers do. We put ourselves out there on the floor for all to see. Whether its hurt, love, excitement whatever.
Sugeasy! - Man Even though we have known each other for a short amount of time I have known many of your exploits thanks to our guy Chris. Indirectly you have helped involve me in this dance. Thank you.
And finally Buggin Out -
I still watch to this day the first middleground event. Glide vs Dvour, Team Action vs Groovenuts. WOW! Maybe we havent been the best of friends. Maybe there might of been hard feelings in the past I dunno. We lost communication for so long. It was really good seeing you guys this past weekend. I felt so proud when I would hear your name being mentioned on message boards for your exploits. You guys had me so motivated back in the day to strive and get better. Unfortunately the same cant be said for others down here. And unfortunately to that it is really hard to stay motivated when others around dont want it.
So to all that I met and all that I have still to meet Thank you for what you do. I may not be able to get up that way very much anymore due to school/work/family, But I consider you all part of my family and you all are in my thoughts every day.
Keep the rock steady and take advantage of every opportunity you can.
Peace to all.

I loved it all. what a treat to be able to bring my 2 foster sons with me to see first hand how vibrant and positive the love for hiphop is locally. Paturn, in the past Fredo, I and others have gotten hot and said stuff, but the true test for me is I have mad respect for him, and many other sister/brother/mentors who introduced me to this culture I have grown to love. Saturday night was amazing and being honored by fredo and middleground, there are no words. keep doing this, breaker's are one place where ALL AGES is alive and well so seeing future breakers dancing on the same floor and parents there in full support of that was priceless.
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT EVENING! PROPS TO THE DJ'S AND PERFORMERS AS WELL.
I remember a night simuliar to this years ago in lawrence at the pool room when I arrived earlier than usual and sat midway between the stage and dance floor.
what I witnessed that night was life altering
here's a post I wrote in 2003 on another message board and then copied it to the clinic site: the Question was "what is "real" Hip Hop" - NRG
Posted Aug 22, 2003 - 02:50 PM
Hip Hop is the livin expression of your truth! It is the NOW and it’s worldwide. which means there is only one "real" hip hop and it is You. Hip Hop is Each and every one of You expressing yourself to the fullest right now. Conversely rap is a music industry/media creation full of controversy and disharmony cuz these things sell big time right now to those too afraid to live their own truth.
I love hip hop!
When I'm at shows I feel a sense of community I have waited 50 years for, like finally I am home. The funny part to me is that it is not about any one thing that is going on at the time, but really it's everything that's happening that lets me know I'm in the right place right now.
hip hop to me is about spontaneous combustion and the joy I feel. "I am alive†and in that moment, I want to just express whatever is happening inside of me "because of what's happening outside of me."
I love the feeling that your (my) individual ness is your (my) "ticket" into hiphop culture not your (my) "sameness" (alikeness)
As I listen, watch, feel, smell, what's being expressed, I want to share myself back as if to say I feel ya, I hear ya, I see ya whatever.
One night at the poolroom, I sat at a table that just so happened to be just at the edge of the breaker's circle. I watched as dancer after dancer stepped to the circle one after the other as if to say, Ya this is what I think you were talking about and this is what I have to say about that" I didn't move that night. I felt like I was watching an ancient tribal ritual and I felt blessed by every dancer that enter that circle. This is hiphop for me.
And ya know it doesn't matter which form you are expressing through, you are still telling your truth of that moment. mcing, beat making, graf, breakin, djing, to me are all just forms used to express what you are feelin, you know "talkin to each other" vibe-n communicating on some whole nother level.
I just wanna say "thank you" to all heads everywhere for knowing that expression is more than OK, its what we are for and why life is worth living.
Peace

man, all i have to say is, whoever wrote that, was definiteyly "in
that space". and is where its at, in spirit, mind and body.
although ive always felt techno music expressed me the most as myself, i
respect hip hop and all of the various other forms of musical expression. and i really mean, bow my head to them respect it.
stealth really hit the nail on the head for me, but to a larger extent, i think what he expressed could be true for any form of
music or human expression, and IS, for all who embody that mind set. when im "in that place" i feel very similar to how stealth feels. After
4 years of being in the scene, which is not even that long, ive felt
a lot happen in the community, and my original sense of unity with
the community has splintered a bit. maybe the scene must be one to feel
its unity, or maybe one must only feel it in his heart to find the unity in it, or anything, for that matter. but yeah, really, i
think thats it, people have to feel it in themselves, and feeling that
place where they want things to be, live it in the now, and work
towards its realization outside of oneself. and i think thats the
way it needs to be, too, if more of us will ever find that place,
again, or for the first time, or stay livin it. i can only hope that as
time goes on, i will find that place, and stay there, along with more
and more people of the community. which is, at its hightest level, all
of us, humanity. but i would like us to go even farther, and include
animals, plants and all the life of this world, into this unifying
culture/community, to something beyond what is presently the world
it is today. i want man to take its self further, to join with the
rest of the community of life, and go beyond the limitations of itself.
Go beyond the limitations of itself, and become, something more.
we'll see,
peace, tim
