Topic: Top DJ's

  1. Feb 7, 2006 12:11am by AJ Location: Downtown Kansas City
I'm trying to step up the guest DJ's @ the Peanut. Right now, i'm working on DJ Spinna, and DJ Premiere. If anyone wants to offer some suggestions on other DJ's, please get at me. We do have somewhat of a budget, so hold off on the Q-bert requsets. But if it is possible, i will try my best. Peace

Both Spinna and Premier would be incredible but bringing talent of that calibre to a venue the size of the Peanut with a soundsystem like that would be an absolute travesty. Just sayin....

Trust me....I've looked into Spinna, Rich Medina...shit even Bobbito...as well as Diplo. Spinna costs a LOT even with the relationship he has with KC. I see him as more of Kabal type headliner...especially with all the house he plays. Diplo would be baaaad, but anyone who thinks his style would fit with HH&HW has never been up to the Peanut. 😉 Besides, dude is only taking dates outside the eastcoast if it involves beaches and warm weather. I'm not kidding.

I would hope to believe that people who frequent the Peanut on Sundays are open to Diplo. His mix sets are hot Fiyah!!

Not hatin on Lawrence at all, but from previous experience on bringin acts in, here's some advice. Make sure in the performance contract that you have thier manager write that he wont book them in Lawrence within at least a month of the KC date. The reason I say this is aint cheap to bring good entertainment and if they book Lawrence the day after KC you instantly loose the Lawrence tickets you would have sold. Also Willard who got smashed through the window sunday (hope he's alright) is puttin together some crazy huge show. You might wanna holla at him cause it sounds like he's got good pull with someone.

same artists mutiple shows in the same weekend or in this area,in the same week, don't fair well. Lawrence and kc are just too close to support both and who ever the promoters are both loose big time on the dollar tip as in shirts being lost. Lawrence or KC and Columbia and then STLouis no problem tho. Demographics are that different and far enough apart to make driving out of the question. seen it before undermines the local scene and continues the secrecy and distrust. small fish with no ocean. cuz of fighting over the pond idea again

So should we just continue driving to lawerance all the time? Originally, I only wanted DJ's. Lawerance doesn't really do that on a regular basis. I still go to lawerance to see bigger shows. Digable, Ghostface etc. But why go all the way out there to a BAR to see an act I can see here in a BAR. And we all know damn well we don't go to half as many shows as we would if we didn't have to drive all the way out there. I wouldn't book a big time act @ the Nut after they had a show in lawerance, but if they are gonna be in town for a couple of days, does it hurt to ask them to stop by?

not at all allen. we're talking about 2 different situations I think. in my comments, I'm referring to larger shows that ask for larger guarentee and other perks, which to the promoter means a greater chance of losing your shirt if the audience gets split within such a small radius of the performance. whoever does the contract with the artist that pays for travel, hotel, hospitality, and guarentees not only a flat fee but maybe a percentage will get the short end of the deal if there is another appearence by the same people within 48 hours in less than 100 miles away. this is just what I have seen (not often mind you) and an opinion I have formed based on what I've seen. stoppin by is not the same thing. promoting their stoppin by like its a show that to me is sticky unless there is some collabrative effort( read after party event or part 2) and shared expense for the expenses artists performing cause. don't know maybe in reality I have it wrong. somebody who has had this experience help me out here.

Its not hurting Lawerance... believe me. I'm in contact w/ promoters out there, and I even pass on shows to them... Hell Edwin is one of my Hero's! If we had more venues, competeing for the same events, I could definitely see your point. Maybe I'm blind, but I don't think thats the case here. The major acts will continue to go to Larry. That's cool. But those so called BAR acts, are fair game!! I don't need to go all the way to the Gaslight Tavern to freeze my ass off and see 2Mex perform. I think Mike Realm would have been hot as well @ HH&HW's. I'd still go to the Gaslight though. That's where I met A-Train and Vajra.

i think we are just discussing finer points really. that's cool I'm not a promoter, and don't know what happens behinds the scenes in most situations. I'm content to do potlucks and fundraise for other pojects that I feel move towards building a different kind of infrastructure for our local scene. (websites, word of mouth support and the like) I think it all goes hand in hand. I'm not ready to step up to the game yet, so I'm gonna continue to watch and learn from those that are steppin up necia

  23. Feb 15, 2006 04:57pm by phism
college kids, too far away w/ no train, hipsters, hippies, frat boys, sorority girls.... i just think it's dumb that most of the good shows go there, and i'm sick of driving out there, and rarely do. kansas city probably wouldn't be considered "boring" by so many of its inhabitants if it weren't for that. if it was about 15-20 mins closer to kc, or if there were some kind of bullet train or something, i don't think i'd mind. but maybe i still would. most people who go to shows there, go because it's something to do, or an excuse to drink. it's not a city, and a lot of the kids are only around for the few years they're in school, so there's not as much potential to have a real scene and culture. we've had a lot of pretty decent musicians based there, but if lawrence didn't exist, and they were all in kc instead, the 'fans' would be more involved..... i don't know, i'm rambling.

Thanx for the suggestions. Don't be too hard on Larry. It serves a purpose if only for getting the only Hip Hop shows we get. I don't see westport or the Uptown doing a ghostface show...or a DJ Krush show for that matter either. I don't like having to drive out there either. but my man edwin does his thing to bring the shows there. I'll support that. It just sucks cuz i know so many other peeps that can't drive out...or won't.
  25. Feb 15, 2006 07:24pm by phism
I'm just saying, if Lawrence hypothetically didn't exist, and KU was in KCK or something, all those things would be here instead... i think it's one thing that's going to keep kc off the cultural map, because everything is dissipated between the two. and lawrence won't make it there either way... so they're either going to have to be connected, or one is going to have to be ignored, and i'm sick of kc being the one that's ignored, because college towns aren't real.

hard to get the egos of the two scenes to work together. they seem to fighting for top dog. really too bad cuz like you I suspect neither will win and both lose. refer to everythings coming up roses between lawrence and kc article. neither one is complete just parts of what it takes to show success.
