Ableton takes some of the best features from FL/Reason and also has some features that are very MPC like, and combines them in a really comprehensive work-flow. I can go on for days about this shit but i'll just highlight some features that sold me on the program. 1) direct recording. I use some hardware synths, and with the MP (or other sampler) i could direct record into my sequence w/out missing a beat. in ableton, you can have your sequence going, create an audio track, and record your hardware synth live into the program and BOOM, its right there in the sequence. no bells and whistles. this is something that reason cannot do, and is a pain in the ass in FL. mind you. Dont even ask if Akai knows what this is...... a lot of people don't even need this feature, but for me, it's really important. the first reason to say no MPC 2) ableton has two modes, kind of like a beat programming mode to get your basic program, then the sequencer mode, to sequence the beat into a song. sequencing in ableton is extremely quick and easy. it's almost too easy at times. there is so much dragging and dropping ability it's amazing. it's almost as if they got inside the heads of beatmakers and really figured out the best work-flow to implement. you can say "oh let me drag this effect here, or drag this kick pattern over here, or make a new track here...etc etc." you can do almost anything, there are few limits. the other positive is that the sequencer in ableton works VERY similar to PT. so if your accustomed to sequencing in PT, the transition will be very smooth. a lot of the key commands and editing features mimic those in PT to a tea, which to me is great that the programmers did this as opposed to trying to be avant garde and implementing some obscure new editing commands. they just kept it familiar and simple. 3) drum tracks. this is basically an MPC style drum machine. there is a browser on the left side of the screen that works exactly like FL where you can scroll through drums/samples whatever and drag them to a track. only in ableton, you can open up the drum tracks device and it's setup like an MPC with 16 empty pads you can drag samples too... only there are up to 168 pads or something you can use in one track!! it's crazy. so in-other-words, on the MPC you have 4 pad banks.. well in ableton, you can have damn near 10 pad banks! ALSO, unlike FL, you can highlight as many drum sounds you want from the browser and drag them all at once to the pads!!! and if that weren't enough, you can edit parameters on each individual pad (ie volume, pan, adrs, etc) and apply effects to each pad... it's insane. oh and you can use 3rd party plugins/vsts! On just that one sample exclusively if you want to. 4) last but not least. the built in sampler makes chopping samples and assigning to pads/keys really easy. let's say you have a sample right, you can drag it in ableton, then open up ableton's sampler. you can then highlight sections you want from the sample (ala PT) and drag those sections directly into the sampler. you then assign all the sample chops too keys/pads and BOOM, there's your chop, assigned to keys and all. and each chop has it's own parameters etc. So as you can see I could go on but I'll just stop here. again, these are the main features of ableton that stood out for me. sequencing is linear in ableton so there's no pattern shit ala FL (which i have NO problem with). you build tracks in a linear fashion (MPC style) so it's pretty simple in that regard. And what do you drop the chopped samples into? The drum rack? This would make it a lot easier for me.
