Topic: Question to all producers in the city... or anyone who knows

    How, WHen, Where did you begin making your beats? I guess the question Im really trying to ask is where can I go to begin a career in beat making? Ive heard about Westend and BRC. Are those the only ones or are there more and if those are the only ones, are they worth it? Any feedback is good feedback. Thanks 🙂

    You won't learn jack about beat-making per se at any of the studios in town. They'll teach you plenty about recording, mixing and engineering but they won't teach a thing about sampling or midi composition. Your best bet for a formal course in KC is the Midi Composition Courses 1 & 2 at JCCC. That's where I first learned the ins and outs of sampling and multi-track beat composition. More importantly, you just need to acquire a sampler or a decent software program and start experimenting. Nothing can match learning by trial and error.

    Cool Edit and Fruity Loops is a classic software starter kit. Chop in CE, make the beats in FL. I don't make beats though, so listen to the other guys.

Plus I was told they have MIDI skills and project courses at one of the studios. DOnt know if thats the same as the Comp courses at JCCC though. But what I get from the posts so far is that trial and error is the best way to get started. Damn, how unmotivating 🙁

That comes from trial-and-error. Determining what works or doesn't work for you. That trumps anything JCCC or anyone else can teach you. Here are a couple questions you can answer that'll get you started. Do you prefer to do sample-based production or beats that require composition? The answer to this will help you determine your production style and also what elements your work will incorporate. Do you prefer software or hardware? The answer to this will help you to narrow down the kind of equipment you'll be using. From there I'd price some equipment or locate some software online and dive right in. Learn your equipment, learn your equipment, learn your equipment!!! Spend some time practicing (making beats)... Get feedback from your peers... (Repeat)

Started making beats by taping radio hits and looping them by recording them in a dual cassette deck rewinding and repeating. Did it better whne got a karaoke machine. My Uncle had an SP-1200 that we would get in trouble for just looking at. He gave me his Gemini DS-1224, that I've had for 13 years and just started using, Last year. I became a daddy In '98, no more going out for me. I got MTV music generator for PSX and started sampling cds alot. But I also used the program to make Electronic, Drum and Bass and house music. Over 200 tracks on PSX memory cards. MAGIX MUSIC maker s what i made my first album on. I played all the MIDI and VST. It sounded like crap. I came across fruityloops, cubase, reason, and Acid pro in '02-'03 and became aware of how many downloaded programs have trojans and worms. I also learned how easy it is to re-arrange samples and sample Mp3s. My Best friend sold me his MPC and I had just bought a Novation MIDI controller. I took the MPC and loaded up ABLETON LIVE as a MIDI controller. I was able to drag files to Ableton and Save my chops and samples to a Zip drive. But I was like why would anyone want to wait for this process? and carry around this huge machine. I was doing the same thing on the MPC as I was on the MIDI controllers. I sold my MPC to Boogie B. I'm glad he got it. My soul is at rest that such raw young up and coming talkent recieved such a historical piece of equipment. I then bought an M-Audio 49 key controller, and recieved an M-Audio Trigger finger for my Birthday. Both came with lite editions of Ableton so I learned that program. It has a very helpful intereface. I eventually got the whole program. It comes with a PDF manual that I had printed out($20.00) . there are numerous videos on the net. as for taking a class. A friend of mine, "my percussionist) known as Dmott on my facebook, is in school for music. He kept encouraging me 6 years ago to take a class with him at JCCC. I told him I didn't have the time. he came over the other day and was amazed at how much. I've learned and taught myself about MIDI. I don't know it all, but I know alot. I want to grow and help others grow, but most of all I want KC to get it wreck. I've given my music to several known people on this site and outside of this site. People say they [i:9be2ac27f1]want[/i:9be2ac27f1] to work...... but they just [i:9be2ac27f1]say[/i:9be2ac27f1] they want to work. So, For me, as far as trial and error goes, I've asked "miles and miles" of people to review KinesthetiC. I got no response. No noise. No feedback positive or negative. Just got to the create the buzz section or look up any poll or any music that anyone has posted. I have had to take people like Dutch, Mics of the Round kids, and Demencha in my car and let them listen, to see what was wrong or right with my beats. Those people people gave me honest open feedback. I was and do make music for myself. I had to craft my music to what other people wanted, if I wanted to be a part of what they were doing. No problem. At the same time Alot of Emcees are understandably too busy or egotistically too flaky. I don't understand why people don't vote or give feedback in the polls. You got to post on non-kansas city sites. I will say its gotten better in the last 2-3 months. On a positive tip....I want to get together with other producers even if its just once a month. Would like to once a week or bi-weekly. I live downtown. I've got plenty of room and the wattage to host this at my house, Or we could use the Guadeloupe Center up the street.. I'm trying to find time and get together and have a Producers Roundtable. Where we would get together and share ideas, VSTs, and Collaborate. There are too many people that JUST MAKE MUSIC in this city and aren't getting heard. and some peoples music I've heard and haven't met. Is anybody down for this? Or a share your Music and Music Making Program get together?

I understand it, pulling peeps into your car and subjecting them to what you've been working on is just necessary. Believe me, I'm aware how fickle mofos are. You get better at emceeing much the same way. I don't make beats. Though, I've been around producers enough to know how they're made. I think ya'll have offered some real helpful advice. For real...

    we have enough producers in the city anyway... anybody with internet access (to download programs) and a small knowledge of music can make beats now days.

I hate it when kids that dj, don't even know what vinyl or wax is. I want to know where one could meet, see, or hear these said producers. Like I said. I've heard some things from some people and then been like, "thats fire, who is that?" then be like. I've never heard of him, let alone ever met him/her. At the same time Legendary Producers are easy to get a hold of.......Unless you are affiliated with a crew or know some kids behind or on the scene, or hang out with kids, meeting some people is nearly impossible.

    If you're interested, we're currently looking for a few interns at Mixtape Soundlabs in Lawrence. It's non paying, as is my understanding, but you would have the opportunity to learn a lot. We have two fully functioning rooms in operation, nice gear, interesting projects on the table right now. Next six months, we're going to be booked pretty solidly. If you're interested shoot me a PM.
