We're launching a new professional development opportunity for Kansas City area artists. This opportunty is for artists of all disciplines who want to be more successful in their careers--that includes writers, filmmakers, choreographers, dancers, performance artists, actors, musicians, composers and visual artists!
Artist, INC will launch this spring thanks to a major grant from LINC (Leveraging Investments in Creativity) . LINC is a ten-year national initiative to improve conditions for artists by providing knowledge, information and financial resources to organizations in 15 communities across the country. The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City, in partnership with Charlotte Street Foundation, is the lead Kansas City participant in the Creative Communities program of Leveraging Investments in Creativity, funded by the Ford Foundation.
Artist, INC is an entrepreneurial and small business skills training seminar for artists. Each session of Artist, INC will meet weekly 8 times on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, with a group of 25 multi-disciplinary artists participating. The weekly sessions will provide specific business training, peer-to-peer learning and mentoring. Five established area artists will serve as program facilitators.
The creation of Artist, INC has been inspired by our success with the Creative Capital Professional Development Program. Artist, INC will focus on similar themes and content, but we think the eight-week format will provide some additional benefits for the participants, based on what we have learned from our experience here and our study of other programs around the country.
Participants will be chosen through a competitive application process. If selected, there is a $140 participation fee to attend the seminar. (Artist, INC is heavily subsidized by LINC and our generous local funders, but fees are necessary in order to make the program sustainable; our goal is to help hundreds of artists benefit from this experience over the next several years.) Payment is not required until 2 weeks before the first session begins, and we expect to offer an installment plan for those who need to spread the payment out a bit.
Artist, INC will be presented twice in 2009 on the following dates:
Series One: May 4, 11, 18, (no session on May 25/Memorial Day weekend) + June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Series Two: September 21, 28 + October 5, 12, 19, 26 + November 2, 9
The deadline for applications for the 2009 seminars is 5 pm, Monday, March 23.
