Topic: Watch the 10 o'clock news tonight (DON'T SLEEP)

   I was reading on another local music message forum and a member on there who works at the city council building (or whatever it's called), said that security was called to the room where they were having a discussion about the [b:3cbdbeae02]dress codes in the power and light district[/b:3cbdbeae02]. She said heads almost started fighting "in the hallway," and that the shit got real heated in there. Watch your local news stations 10 o'clock news tonight (that's 45 minutes from now) - because it will be all over the news. I'll be back with comments after I watch. PEACE

Brooks used both fiery words and an unexpected prop to make her point that the Power and Light District’s dress code discriminates against African-American men and denigrates women. She said the waitresses should be held to the same dress code as customers. She then brought out a Stein Mart bag and produced a “Barely There” pink bra and purple panties. She said that is the type of attire worn by the waitresses at some establishments, “Except they were matching," and wearing fish-net hose. She said she is particularly disturbed by the ban on white T-shirts, which she said was targeted black males. But she’s all for the baggy pants ban. “I don’t support baggy pants. Never have, never will.” Councilwoman Melba Curls said she partially blames herself for the dress code flap. She said her son, Louis, was turned away in November 2007. She said she pushed to have the dress code posted so no one would be embarrassed and turned away. But she said the dress code morphed into something more discriminatory than she imagined. She said she was amazed by the ban on jewelry of a certain length. “I don’t want to put any business out of business. I want it to be user friendly,” she said. “We don’t want to turn people away who will spend money.” The debate ranged about two hours with impassioned arguments on both sides. Representatives for the Hispanic Chamber of Greater Kansas City and the Downtown Council said the proposal would infringe on the rights of business owners. Cordish Co., the developer of the downtown entertainment district, believes the proposed ordinance is unconstitutional. "The ordinance attacks and is targeted at the Power and Light District," said Zed Smith, director of asset management for Cordish. Tiffany Williams, 28, who is an African-American, said she had been turned away from the district because she was wearing a head scarf. She said she was with Louis Curls when he was turned away and was again turned away on a third occasion when a person in her group had on a shirt deemed too long. She said all citizens should be able to patronize businesses supported by tax dollars. "It is very important for us to have something that is equitable and something that is fair and something that is going to be across the board," she said. "We are not specifically targeting one area but this is the one area that has had the most complaints." Councilman John Sharp, a member of the zoning committee, said the ordinance is needed because Cordish has refused to work with the city to make changes to ensure their dress codes aren't discriminatory. "They could have avoided all of this," Sharp said. Former Councilwoman Carol Coe raised the notion of boycotting and picketing the entertainment district. She also criticized some African-Americans who are working for Cordish as publicists for their opposition to the city's proposed dress code ordinance. That prompted heated words from the publicists Emiel Cleaver, son of the congressman, and Shawn Edwards, entertainment reporter for Fox 4. Edwards took to the microphone to say Coe's comments should be discounted because she had a mental condition and needed psychiatric treatment. These comments outraged some so much that shouts rang out in the chamber and extra security officers had to be called in to help quiet the crowd down. When asked about Edwards' comments, she discounted them. The heated words continued later in the meeting and even outside in the hall. Committee chairman Terry Riley abruptly adjourned the meeting after he came under criticism from local attorney Clinton Adams Jr. Some council members had planned to discuss the ordinance and possibly proposed amendments. Adams told Riley that some African-American leaders had wanted the ordinance heard in the zoning committee rather than another committee because they thought it would get a fair hearing. But Adams accused Riley of selling out to Cordish, referring to yesterday's Prime Buzz post. Riley denied this and said he didn't want to rush through the ordinance. People are idiots. Ireally hope all of the people making those comments live in the 'burbs! I could say so much, wife beaters, mini skirts, trucker hats, and why are flanel shirts even allowed on our city?? And Yo dude! (on the link above) People were deliberately and purposefully told to stay away, not shop, and not to invest in Bannister Mall. The wanted the urban blight.
