I know a demographic that Obama and the Democrats are ignoring.
McCain is ignoring it too, but that's part of his party's ideology.
I have no idea how many plumbers are in America and I think it's off-base to even try to figure it out.
I calculate approximately 35 million Americans of voting age smoke cannabis - pot, weed, mar-ju-wanna, reefer: whatever you call it - a minimum of 1 time per year or more.
That demographic is systematically demonized by the GOP as part of their reefer mad ideology. This is important to them.
I do not believe it is important to Democrats. I think they are a mix of spinelessness and wussifed fear such that they don't generally broach the topic.

This Halloween makes 30 year of getting high regularly.
I have graduated from college and graduate school. I have obtained a professional license and have spent 25 of those 30 years in service to children and families with mental health and developmental problems.
I am generally considered good at what I do and have dealt with some very serious stuff. I have also seen the effects of long-term poverty, it's connection to racism and capitalism.
I' am married to an awesome woman from another country, I own a home, I pay taxes, I follow the laws - except for speed limits and pot smoking (usually not mixed).
I am registered to vote.
In short, I am not Beavis, or Butthead. I'm neither Cheech or Chong (both of whom are far more successful financially than I am). I'm not Jeff Spicoli, dudes. I'm not Pauly Shore, buuuu-dee.
I'm a healthy, intelligent, well-educated professional and all-around good guy who opens doors for others, says "Yes Sir, and No Ma'am" and tends to be more respectful of others than I should. (Usually... things happen )
There are millions and millions of Americans just like me and the GOP treats us like fucking terrorists. The Democratic Party has failed so miserably to address this, which, of course, is very Democrat-like of them. Ever the ones to snatch defeat from the mouth of victory.
Democrats just don't seem to get it
Barney Frank tries to push for reform; Dennis Kucinich tries to. They get it.
The "Democratic Leadership" - those buffoons who should have impeached Bush with extreme prejudice - they are to blame.
They might get it, but we'd never know. They are too concerned about sucking up to the Republicans and not you and me. This is why that miserable fuck Bush won't be impeached after directly causing the deaths and suffering of uncountable thousands of innocent people. At least he didn't smoke pot, right?

Obama is sort of off this hook for the time being as I don't expect him to jeopardize his run for the White House by talking specifically about this issue right now. That's unrealistic, if you ask me.
I DO believe that Obama is NOT like the GOP, that he knows the laws against cannabis are stupid and arbitrary and that once he's elected those of us who have been fighting to change these stupid laws will have a significantly more receptive ear to bend.
The REST of the Democratic activists need to be coddling us and trying to get us to vote for Obama.
Every single one of those insufferable whiners who fingerwags about "complacency" whenever somebody suggests planning for Obama's victory and who display stomach-churning self-righteousness about "we need to work our asses off!!!!!!" needs to work their ignorant asses off approaching pot smokers. You know who you are and you should suck up to me.
The laws against pot are stupid and indefensible. They aren't based on anything but racism and greed.
It's nothing like alcohol or tobacco or firearms - 3 leading killers that are as legal as air - yet so many people think - wrongly - that "it must be illegal for a reason. A lot of pot smokers actually believe this too, without reason. It's a phrase that, once uttered, tells me a person knows nothing about the topic.
These laws have needed to change for 2 generations but we have the GOP standing smack in the way, on purpose, insisting the Plant never be relegalized and regulated.
Smart Democratic policy would be to press for regulation - cannabis should be every bit as available as BOOZE and cancer-sticks and there is not a defensible reason for this.
In short, Democrats who aren't welcoming this change are ignorant at best.
Dems won't do it but they really should be figuring out how to encourage pot smokers to vote for them and not MCain. McCain is fully into continuing the failed war on drugs - probably because it wastes lots of money and accomplishes nothing - a hallmark of Republican values.
Forget the plumber.
Pot smokers are your basic massive untapped demographic: even if you don't personally like us, stop your self-righteous finger-wagging at least long enough encourage them to vote Democratic.
That IS what all the finger-wagging is about, isn't it?

weed is the dumbest political bloc i've ever heard of.
if you're already a pothead, you're not having too tough of a time smoking anyway. and would you really want our senators discussing the confiscation of bongs when they could be trying to figure out how to make it possible for me to occasionally eat chipotle instead of pb&j? which, i guess if i were a pothead, would indirectly be a more important concern of mine anyhow.

Actually I view it, other way around. Imagine if farmers grew as much weeds as tobacco, then it was regulated and taxed.

He is one of the only people on television that says whatever he want.
I watched the episode of Late Night with Bill Maher on ABC, the one he got canned for, where he said that "Americans were cowards because they would never die for what they believe in like the guys on the plane."
It was hard to disagree with him then, that was almost ten years ago.

That is very true, I have a lot of respect for that side of Bill Maher. He was my fucking hero after he'd said that.
But he lets that house fall through with weak foundation by forcing issues upon you in a "if you don't agree with me then you are an idiot" manner and I can't stand that from either side. Same reason I do not like Rush Limbaugh.

My respect for him comes from that he won't deny any of those things about himself.
