Those are classic lyrics from Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It,†just one of the treasures Senor Oz and Sike Steez spun at the “Nice Up the Dance†party. During “Nice Up†every Thursday, the RecordBar parties like it’s Friday. It’s only $3, and the staff makes a mean screwdriver.
At a recent “Nice Up,†Oz teamed up with Sike Steez for a party so crunk that Oz is talking about teaming up with Sike once a month.
We used to flock to Jilly’s for its Breakdown Fridays and Soundsystem Thursdays, but when you take two DJs, one from each of those nights, and put them together in a bigger place with better sound, it’s a celebration.
Their sets covered everything from reggae and reggaeton to funk, hip-hop and soul. Whether it was Missy Elliott or Rick James or Nina Sky or 2 Live Crew, they kept bodies moving.
Steez spun the b-girls and b-boys into a frenzy with his Tribe Called Quest set, which included golden era tunes like “Check the Rhime,†“Award Tour,†“Oh My God,†“Can I Kick It,†Q-Tip’s solo joint, “Vivrant Thing†and “The Scenario.â€
And Oz killed it when he followed “Push It†with JJ Fad’s “Supersonic.†We did so much shaking, I took “drop it like it’s hot†to a new level. I swear I shook something that shouldn’t have jiggled, and the next day my entire back was sore. It was worth it, though.
Every time I tried to take a break, the DJs would throw some club jumpers, like Beenie Man’s sexy reggae “Slam†or prime party anthem “Bombs Over Baghdad,†by Outkast.
The next best thing to the music is there was enough space for the b-boys and b-girls to break and for us party dancers to groove, too. It’s very rare that we can find a space to exist in harmony, and even dance together on occasion. But Thursday we could enjoy breakers like Leo, Albert, Flops, Heemz and Delinda and also drop it to Amerie’s “1 Thing†and any other booty-shaking beat that came on.
At one point, half past midnight, I decided I was sweaty enough and so out of breath that I needed to go home and get some rest, so I said my goodbyes and left.
By the time I got into my car to leave, the heavy bass beats came all the way outside the club to give me a burst of energy, I heard the Light was on his way and I parked the car and headed straight for the dance floor. It’s the first time I ever left a party only to come right back. But if you have dance in your heart, Steez and Oz are going to keep you going until you can’t go anymore.
