Honestly, the new(ish) hip-hop promotion at the Crossroads is probably the best thing those hipster d-bags have ever come up with . . . I noticed the crowd was kind of lite on Friday tonight but all of the energy was definitely centered around 18th St.
The Soul Providers Crew definitely worked the crowd with a lot of skill and I was impressed since this is the first time I'd ever seen them live.

As always, REACH is simply a superior MC, probably the best thing Kansas City rap has seen in 10 years and if there is any justice in this world, should be a major force in the hip-hop world overall in the next 18 months.

As I was leaving I noticed the group was back in action after having taken a quick break and there was a rap battle underway . . . I came in around the end and this woman holding the mike was ripping apart this guy. It was so entertaining that I didn't really even mind that much when a dude in the crowd leaned back to his friend and with a Midwestern twang exclaimed: "This is just like 8 mile!!!"
Honestly, I know I like to hate on just about everything about this town but middle of the block show made me glad I left the basement just for a little bit.

18th street seems to be hoppin' during first fridays. The salon I'm working at in the Westside neighborhood hosted an art opening that night that went over schedule, so I didn't make it down.
I think it would be cool to have a block party here in the Westside neighborhood with KC hip hop sometime, maybe even during a first fridays. It would bring us to life a bit. Most people don't know about the west of broadway during the gallery openings! Some local artists would be lovely.
