    i am sorry. i gotta get this off my chest, but i am sick as hell of everybody and their mama biting the hell out of dilla's style. it seems everywhere i turn these days, there are nothing but people straight ripping his styles off. i think if you are a hiphop producer these days, its hard not to be influenced by dilla( i even hear certain influences in my own music..... its hard not be influenced in some ways)...i mean, .he was completly groundbreaking when it came to beats....but GOT DAMN!!! i hear fools out there making tracks that sound exactly like dilla, like dilla himself made the beat. THIS HAS GOTTA STOP. i am all for paying tribute to one of the great musicians of our day, but, ....YOU ARE NOT DILLA!!!!!!!!!(not directed to anyone in particular, fyi) WHAT HAPPENED TO ORIGINALITY?? ITS GETTIN A LITTLE RIDICULOUS IN MY OPINION. but thats just my opinion, not fact, but it has really been buggin me lately....had to get that off my chest. peace

    other things like this come to mind: coltrane, jay-z, krs one, not saying like i feel it but you get the gist seems like dilla in great company and I feel you about the bitin my feelins bout that are not everyone is original and many miss dilla and maybe this is part of a group grieving process don't know plus try to explain the princess diana phenomenon and the only thing that works there is grief on a grand skill. hiphop is sad about the loss of J-dilla and in true hiphop manner they are not only sampling they are mimicing. 2 cents

    i would say ppl do it out of respect, hopefully not for monetary gain. & besides, even if they are "dilla biters", at least the music they make should at least be half as good as mr james yancey's, which is still decent. but i understand what you're sayin'. pce.

    In a way that's almost like saying you aren't Elton John so you can't play a cover of Benny And The Jets. It's doesn't make much sense to not learn covers since they will help teach time tested techniques and chord progressions. Maybe Dilla is one of their standards- is it wrong to have influences and inspirations rather than trying not to do whatever someone is doing (there's only so many combinations anyway)? Also think of it like this- he's still alive through his music and his impact on Hip Hop. Is it biting or immortalizing? Plus I know I have the right to listen or not listen to whatever I want.

I understand what's being said- just bringing another view to it. In my opinion the important thing to ask one of those kids is if they had fun making those tracks.

    Dilla changed the way music sounded, so his influence, the way he did things, his interpretation of soul, rock, funk, has become more than just his style, it's become a standard. The swing on his drums, basslines, loops, the way he chopped grooves, the way he filtered samples, all of that is now standard. I, for one, have the utmost respect for Mr. Yancey,but i also realize that he too was influenced heavily by certain individuals. The way he went back to chopping and just looping up soul and rock records, was not his invention, it was done heavy in the late 80's and 90's. The way he would use a classic break, and then find a good loop for it, was not his, Premier had that jumping off years before he came on the scene. I appreciate Dilla more for reminding us how hip hop used to sound.

    True indeed Joc. Dilla also made usage of West Coast Hop popularized by producers in the region who also used loosely quantized drum sequences.

    my only issue is people making a career of it... and doing it poorly. A hip hop / soul , beatmaker/producer not learning from Dilla is like a soul singer not learning from Stevie Wonder. Its not good if you dont. Its important history that effected and changed the ear of music listeners, whether they realize it or not. Not being influenced by Dilla is like future presidents not observing the nightmare that is the GWBush whitehouse. Take notes and improve upon it. LennyD, like others, you know you are influenced.. Its just a matter of people not making a decision to stop their own progression while puking all over someone else's shoulders. LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Silence is powerful.

    Naming Dilla a universal standard for Hip Hop production is a stretch. Certainly he's had wide-ranging influence over a particular sect of artists and producers, but some producers would argue that he's had no influence at all over their careers. People tend to overstate Dilla's legacy. And that's coming from a Day 1 fan who would name Dilla, by far-and-away, his favorite producer.

Nowadays people go crazy about dilla and will give their life to promote him and such, they'll say shit like "if you use a kick and a snare, your biting his style".     Honestly I think for Hip Hop to evolve and progress it needs to focus on performance rather than production- I'm pretty much speaking about the instrumental aspect of it. I really could care less what someone can do in the studio if it can't be done just as good or better in a live setting. Seems like some people are finally catching on to this idea. Greed and close-mindedness are the main things that hold Hip Hop back......also toss in the fact ego isn't a good thing and pride is one of only 7 deadly sins. God bless Hip Hop. I love and hate it at the same time.

It's way more palatable to me to be playing a bunch of Dilla influenced tracks that have depth the being stuck with a Timberland or Kanye influenced piece of ish that is way less entailed. Dilla pushed the producer's work ethic and imagination, and even those that are taking notes usually have better music in my opinion.

I'm still trying to familiarize myself with J.Dilla. I never knew that he produced alot of the songs that he did. Its a shame he didn't get the love and bumpness he does now, while he was alive. People like me didn't get a chance to experience him when he was doin his thing, cause I was in my own thing. So you can't blame so new fan, with a little money, and a little gear, to try to make some beats for his homies, they probably have beats that sound like yours(anyone), so, are they biting you? From the J.Dilla music I do have, its almost impossible for me to not hear Pete Rock and/or Madlib. Did he have any totally original music? Did he bite any other artist? He sampled the majority of his music, correct? Keep building! Have fun, but try to stay original! This is what is important. peas AF

    i could be wrong, but when i hear dilla, i think of ali shaheed muhammad - of course this goes back the the ummah days, but i think either dilla took some notes from him & put his own twist on his beats, or vice versa. either way it's good music!
