in my recent interview with KCUR, I was asked about our "scene" ( I know, the dreaded "scene" debate) But I'm wondering how you would have answered the question... [b:166c8b6b67]"Local hip hop scenes, especially in kansas city, depend on a local hip hop community. How do Kansas City Hip Hoppers keep their community together?"[/b:166c8b6b67]

It's easy with support from the peanut, 90.1 show me mix show, Producer and MC battles coming up, and good pitch articles about our "scene".. AND!! this website most importantly 🙂

I think our sense of community is deeper than any weekly, radio program or periodical. I think our respect and support of one another is made manifest in HH+HW, The Show Me Mixshow, etc. That's what truly makes the ancillary stuff special. That respect and support is what binds us. And what I think will keep us fairly cohesive.

Sup with good ole ENTHUSIASM?? Maybe it's just me, but I'm seeing a lack of it, aside from the coordinators like NRG, Reach and Miles. Like NRG said, the scene needs to be excited about the fruits of their own labor and that will attract needed support from the non-hip hop community. Support in all lanes... Attend events, spread the word about local albums, and show the radio that more support is needed from them like what Shorty's mixtape has contributed.

I am speaking of the bonds that are created between those who will give honest feedback from their experience and knowledge with an eye on growth for the person they are talking to. Conversely the person receiving this honest critique is listening with a mind geared towards discovery about themselves and their creativity. In this exchange personal ego and feelings are not Key, discovery and growth are the goals. My wish for everyone in 2008 is that we get focused on evolving our creativity, exploration of avante gard, out of the box, boarder expression, and open minded tolerance for each person's point of view. to me, these are the benchmark qualities of growth, creativity, evolution, community, and beauty. love to hear from you on any or all of what I have expressed here. try out givng some honest criticism on me you might like it. I can always use solid insights.

Personally I think its who you know. I know some kids that tried to "get on" and certain people who were in the position to let them perform or do a show said no. While people like me, (a weak emcee) got a show or two with no problem. I think and feel its all about who you hang out with. For instance people might feel like they know me from the crazy, ill, whack, immature, uncalled for, or out of place things I say here. But when they meet me they find out that I am way chill and a cool kat! But there is this underlying, unspoken hate going on in KC. People act like if you say something bad you're a hater. If you don't agree with the majority, your a hater or out of touch. the thing most people figured out about me is that Im real and I dont care what you think. Call it bad business ethics, call it keeping it real. but I will tell you what I think and I won't sugar coat it. I also have no problem admitting if and when I am wrong. But there is no "stick togther ness" I've seen Rock bands invite other rock bands to help them promote a show. Emcees love to hog the stage and out shine everyone else. I don't know exactley what I am trying to say, but I would love it if there was more unity. We got kids from 51st hating on Westport kids and South side hating on JoCo. Nobody ever does anything as a movement. Its all solo, and what can you contribute? I wish there was more unity in KC Hip Hop. Please let me know what I can do to help move this!

^I agree with a lot of that Ace. I think that there is a certain amount of clickishness here and it's true that everyone doesn't get along. Although, I think that variety is better for music than an idea of 100 percent unity. I don't know how much of a true community stands in Kansas City as far as Hip Hop goes but for me and the people i've been involved with musically, it's been about establishing our own thing instead of going with the pack. There are a bunch of emcees who don't get shows and write ups that I feel should. Community in my eyes isn't just about bigging up yourself, it's giving propers to the next person who deserves it so that they can shine a little. It would be the idea of what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Although, in this age of DIY rap, the hustle and glorified self promoters, it takes more than just word of mouth to get people interested in another's art. Is there a real community in Hip Hop in Kansas City? Sure! Yet, for every Hip Hop and Hotwings, Record Bar show, Feel Sexy, etc., there are a bunch of people who don't feel like they belong in that realm. I think that they should look into doing their own thing and forget what eveybody else is doing.

I mean for instance. Look @ the emcee battle. It started out as a producer battle, right? I went and screwed that up, now I am completely un included in the whole ordeal. Nobody was like okay, lets see them do it live. The person I was "beefing" with "won" or thinks he did, and the whole thing was over. Now, I am unincluded in the whole event, and this kid is playing all the cuts for the emcee battle? I found out about the producer battle from a flier. So I feel...... I am not a part of "that" community. Its being ran by one "group" that don't really need, feel, or want me. So do I feel left out? Yeah, in a way. Will I attend and support? Yes! But how willing do you think I will be to "give" any of this "group" $$$ (merch in the future) or Beats$. Not near nutter! shall I hold a grudge? *****personally I wouldn't trust anyone who wasn't down with the Boom Bap, when it wasn't POP, to play shit for me. but I guess thats what the people want! 🙄

Here's the lowdown on this entire battle thing. I wanted to do an emcee battle. First, it was Sike, myself and Ubi talking about doing it. Toon and I talked and we were going to run it together. Toon booked the date and we figured a prize (which was not 1000 dollars.) We were going to try to have a performance after but it didn't work out. We were discussing trying to get Mac Lethal to close the show and maybe someone before. Then reach had his show where D Will, Johnny Quest and Lenny D did their beat showcase. I figuerd it would be cool to do the exact same thing at the battle. We talked about D Will, Nez Beat and Trystyl for ours. It was an invite only thing that doesn't seem like it's even going to happen. The battle idea was a great idea. To be honest with you, some egos got in the way and i'd be surprised if it even goes down.

i dont know if i speak for all my buddies but i personally feel that the community as a whole is very welcoming...obviously i havent met everyone or maybe we havent been around long enough but i havent felt any "hate" i think that if everyone focuses on what they can individually bring to the table, dinner could be delicious.... its easy to talk about more unity in kc hip hop....but its hard to even comprehend what that entails...what moves would it take for someone to sit back and go, wow, kc hip hop is actually unified...there is an endless list of things that would never satisfy everyone....and now, im trying to come to a conclusion of some kind...i dont often write too much on forums... all i know is what i can do....i love to write and perform...my buddies swayzorbladez and acetone write and perform...swayzorbladez, blazinbates, and blakgumz make amazing beats...and we arent goin anyplace so if anyone needs us for anything...let us know 🙂

And i will be extremely surprised if the battle even happens. don't feel sour, like you are not included... talk to the next person doing a show and ask if you can showcase some beats. There is no beef, i just felt you needed to tone down the shit talking a little. No love lost... it was stupid on my part to even get involved, At blams house i was very happy to see joco cats and midtown people coming together and chillin... it is always a nice community time... and the new faces in the scene are people to watch.
