i thought we were talking about computer monitors. in which case, lcd monitors are the best thing since sliced french queens.
i have sennheiser headphones that are pretty decent, but that make me wish i'd spent the extra $30 for the sonys. except i think i was mega-broke at the time.

Behringer Truth 8's. I had a separate Yamaha sub woofer, but didn't really need it cause of the lows on the Behringers.
Highly recommended. I use Sennheiser HD headphones.

They are amazing. Built in RTA (room measurement) so you set them up...plug in an RTA mic and boom the speakers EQ themselves to your room.
I want to get a pair of KRK VX4s for my 2nd set...i also am looking for a pair of DynAudio BM5As
Sennheiser HD25 headphones.
The great thing about working at Guitar Center is that I have 2 rooms of speakers to reference from. If any of you guys ever need to hear your shit on different speakers stop by while I am working and we can take a listen.
