Jay-Z samples '70s song by Rudy Love
Love's "Does Your Mama Know You Do This, Little Girl?" is used in "Sweet," which plays over opening scenes in the film "American Gangster."

If it's sometimes true that what's old is new again, then longtime Wichita musician Rudy Love is on the cutting edge.
One of his songs from the 1970s, "Does Your Mama Know You Do This, Little Girl?" has been sampled by rapper Jay-Z in his concept album for the movie "American Gangster," opening today.
The song, called "Sweet," will play over the movie's opening scenes, Love said. The movie, starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, is about Harlem heroin kingpin Frank Lucas.
The song will also appear on the rapper's "American Gangster" CD, which will be in stores Tuesday. But the song will not appear on the movie soundtrack.
Love said he was excited when he got a call for permission to use his music, and he was elated when he first heard the song.
"Jay-Z's people from New York called me and asked me for a license," he said. "They played it for me over the phone and I said, 'Cool. Way cool.' I like his confident way of expressing his vocal rhythm. He has a style unlike all rappers. I guess that's what makes him the king of rap."

The original song was recorded in Wichita and remastered in New York in the 1970s. It has a contagious mix of blues and funk of the period. The song, Love said, was inspired by his second wife.
It ended up on the first album made by Rudy Love and the Love Family.
Love said he wasn't sure how Jay-Z discovered the song, but he noted that he's made many friends in the music industry over the years. His daughter, Candace, who is also a rapper, was signed at one point to Def Jam Recordings, of which Jay-Z is president.
On hip-hop Web sites, fans seem happy with the single. Some are citing it as a reason to buy the CD.
Love hopes that Jay-Z will sample more of his music.
"In every generation so far, in every genre of music, I've had some famous person doing my music," he said. "So I'm thinking, yeah, cool. But Jay-Z by far is the biggest."
