Topic: When/How is K.C. gonna be put on the map?
- Nov 5, 2007 11:25pm by Urban-Suburban Location: Kansas City, Kansas
Im sure this question has been asked several times but my emphasis stemmed from people from across the globe (i.e. South Africa, Nigeria and Australia) asking me, of all people, when this town is gonna be properly represented. All I can say is "I dont know"
This says alot about the character and potential of this city. When people from other cultures from around the world ask about your city, you know it must have a spark that hasnt burst into flames yet.
Just wanting some feedback if this makes any sense.

I am continually frustrated with the fact that this City hasn't been properly recognized, I do still strongly believe that there is hope , I don't know if it will be Mac or Reach that will be the ones to lead the way this go round or not but people are trying/doing their thing, Tech Nine had a great go at it, I truly believe that CES CRU has a shot too.
Theres alot of talent here, Ive been at it since 1999, I am proud to have been a contributor to this scene and thats enough for me.
I will never stop making music here though, never !!! I will be 80 and youll have to pry the sampler from my cold dead fingers.
Oh, and welcome back to the site.
- Nov 6, 2007 12:07am by Urban-Suburban Location: Kansas City, Kansas
Good luck with doing what youre doing. keep at it! This town needs the type of spirit you have.
No doubt. Theres mad amounts of talent here. I think people also need to know that there are also mad amounts of supporters to back the people with talent.. as I am one of them.
To whoever is trying to make there own moves throughout the KC scene, know that you have a strong support system. Even if you dont see them among the thick cloud of heavy haters, they are definitely there.

We need a professional music culture.
We need artists who handle their own business.
Who invest and spend their artist-created revenues wisely.
Who make wise decisions concerning their craft.
Who can live off of their music to forge the kind of solidarity a thriving music scene needs.
We need more independence and less of what a certain journalist is about to expose...

i think it's more about quality releases that are truly pushed not just in local areas but as far as you can. a lot of records come out in this area that aren't even pushed in chi let alone the smaller cities in the midwest. to be honest if you're dropping your album with less then 1000 copies and a tour in mind youre undercutting yourself from the jump. scenes are like the tides the come and go.... we need to move past this and let artist push beyond kansas city and stand on their own two. maybe when enough of our artist get out of this barrel and face the world something will happen but who knows...

Shit like this thread is inspiring. I've been in the lab crushin these buttons and pads, and I got some new jawns for emcees. I want to be a part of this movement. Its so New School, but cats wont even know 'til its too late, they gonna have to run hard to catch the train then. I will stay humble, less I will become more modest in the speech , in the hopes that I will not bring unfair luck, to the bless'd mic's that will be spitted upon. Because I've seen the future, and nobody in Kansas City is ready, everybody is sleepin, and niggas keep jacking our flow cause, cause niggas keep burning out with it.

Its not about local publicity and has nothing to do with the law.. at least not directly.
How many of you upcoming dj/producers would willingly go out of your way to make tracks for the streets?
I will leave it at that and wait for responses and then go from there.

Good reponse.
Lets say rappers from other cities come to kc and help them get the start. No doubt its happened in the past and failed but what makes you think it will always fail? What makes you think anyone has given up? And most importantly, what do album sales and tours mean when youve already double dollared more than most people have made in a lifetime.
Its not about the pitch or the star, or even tours and album sales. Its about being that one who stands out the most and who makes the biggest influence that can attract the big leagues. As anyone would know its not that easy, especially when you're well aware of the law. This is where fear manifests itself in many different forms. If you knew the streets and what people are willing to do, and actually doing, then you would see exactly how fear is a major factor in why kc really hasnt made any mainstrem noise.

Compare the law between chicago and kc (or kc and any other american city), then factor in the amount of people living on welfare etc, times that by the crime and murder or whatever and eventually you come up with an apparent analytical comparison.
Its not about how grimey your hood is, its about how intelligent your hood is.
Not to sound cocky or anything but I know what Im talking about, and confidence is whats mandatory. Haters do not exist and that atmsphere is created by the individuals themselves and as a "group". This is no theory this is real life.

im in the streets every night and networking with the corporate heads. you can have a positive message with a club banga, im in the lab working on a few projects like that. I'm in the club and when local cats make the efoort to get me quality mastered music that goes hard in the club I play it. its time for artists to step their game up also and have their music on jump drives. I don't have time with cd's anymore, it is time to get with the technology, i'm using serato along with other dj's have a jump drive with your hottest tracks already bpm'ed up( i don't have time to figure out you bpm and telling me its a club song doesnt help. Make it a high wality mp3 192 bitrate or higher preferrably 320 bitrate(if you dont know what i'm talking about read a book) Bring your ass to the club early. I get there around 8-9 depending on the club and we can talk and i am more willing to chop it up with you while im setting up than comming to me at prime time expecting me to play your music. If you give me a cd make sure you have contact info. I don't do business cards, i call you on my cell phone for you to lock me in when you hit me back thats when i know your serious. I will talk more later

I'd like to think we got a few artist on this board who are going along way to put this town on the map. Theres some very good talent on here which was a breath of fresh air for me.
On the other hand not to hate but I think it's unfortunate a guy like Tech9ne was the face of Kansas City with lines like "This is the town where clowns put it down" and lookin like Coolio with Red hair dye fuck outta here. I think artist just gotta stay hungry and always be open to constructive criticism.

hes going for the more urban image his sound has changed from what it was before. The new cd shows his ways to adapt to the change. the music industry now is a changing climate. people wonder why it hasnt blow up in this city is because of major labels have had bad dealings with people in this city. From street to underground, label reps have had to deal with egos and people who werent on their business and understand that with a label you have to play a position and prove yourself before you you make demands. People are demaning before the ink even drys on the contract. ALso artists should be sending out tracks left and right to various dj's even if we don't play it in the club, we can send it to cats in other markets who support. Im gonna be honest, its sad but i get more music from street cats than underground, i can count on one hand the music i have gotten from underground artists. I can reach out to a gold and platinum rapper in other markets on myspace or phone and have an exclusive or a freestyle in 10 minutes to 1 day. I am still waiting on music from underground artists. Im not sayign im the quickest to return calls, but i try. as i statied in other post cats should be dropping hd's full of music because i know at least they are 5 tracks i can play. People need to get out there and do shows more out of town and release mastered projects with barcodes and major myspace support. Get out of "the circle" and see its more. They are suburbs, country towns, college towns(more than lawrence-no disrespect),areas in the city to expose their music. Me and PL have this discussion once a week, Q-tips had hits with tribe but his major joints were Vibrant Thang and Breathe and Stop(dope ummah tracks), you can have a party tracks and tracks with a message, thats why q-tip dropped that cd in 98. They are kids in NKC,JOCO,RAYMORE,LEES SUMMIT,ST JOE and other areas, link out with them on myspace and get your hustle up.....I can get on the commerical radio issue later......
I will drop more later......

I've been interviewing different people from released music from the 70's-90's and everyone has said the one thing, the thing that held them back was not getting out there and traveling. people were happy being successful locally and they didn't have the means to network to get their sound out. Many made a mint by releasing tracks locally and doing it by performing everywere and building a fan base without radio or media support. They reached out to the dj's and various promoters and they made the independed money without relying on a major. they utilized mom and pop stores to get the music out and barber shops, liquor stores gigs.

That's the foundation for being a successful indieground artist.
I think more artists in Kansas City know the path than people give us credit for. Staying the course is what's difficult.
There's a certain protocol to be followed.
I think you must begin with maximizing opportunities in your own market though. Once you've done that you expand. Small scale...then the bigger scale.
I think that's where quite a few artists are at the moment.
Others are in the earlier stages of that process.
The spirit of "indie music" is alive and well in Kansas City.
In truth, I think we do it better than other more notable US cities and to much less fanfare.
There's work to be done, but I think we've made strides.

My honest opinion is that KC has not been put on the map properly because of the lack of A-1 material that comes out of here.
I can only name one rapper and one producer that I truly feel has the chops to go to the big leagues.

I won't name his name, because I don't think he'd really want me to, but there's a local producer who most of you probably know who is working with Erykah Badu. This producer told me that someone was selling copies of his mixtape in Chicago and someone affiliated with Badu, in some form or fashion, got a hold of it and now dude's producing a track for her.

I'm sorry...
I don't buy the bit about there only being 1 rapper and 1 producer in all of Kansas City being "ready for the big leagues".
There are already more than a few producers in the metro with major industry credits.
If the barometer is talent...
I can name 5 in the next 10 seconds.
Can't be talent... Take a gander at the Top 40.
Not brimming with lyrical prowess.
If the barometer is business savvy...
I can name 5 in the next 10 seconds.
It's just not that cut and dry.
Besides...
A musical revolution doesn't take singular artists/producers to land on label giants. It just takes an industry appreciation for a particular area.
Detroit's coming out party happened on the backs of artists signed to indie labels.
DC's coming out party is happening on the backs of artists without major recording contracts.

hell in the IN Crew and Soul Providers alone there's upwards of 20 cats who are talented enough to be signed in my opinion. you can throw in at least 10 heads from the next generation or wave of KC talent that have the potential too.
There's more than enough talent. i've seen so many crews and talent pools in other cities i've been in in the last 2 years. dudes that are killing it elsewhere bar for bar, song for song, live show for show wouldn't be Top 50 emcees if they were in KC from what i've witnessed. But they've organized their business, they have followings that are like movements, and they capatilize and utilize every opportunity they have to get further into the proverbial door. whatever it takes.
it's so easy if you consistently give people something tangible (i.e. promotional flyers, downloadable music, exlusives, mixtapes, samplers, official releases) you gig somewhat regularly and have a good presence on the mic, you put out solid product, you collect resources for media outlets (i.e. publications for potential reviews, interviews, and articles), you put together solid press kit packages (i.e. a bio, discography, press, pictures, and your demo/latest release), and you pool all of that into stacking chips to help you set up tours circuit, regional, or nationwide. but, you gotta grind you can't sit back and twiddle your thumbs just hoping that demo you sent off to Rawkus is going to get you "on" bc you're "that dude" in your city.
i wish at 19 and 20 i knew half of what i know at almost 25, half of what i try to pass onto these youngstars i meet at every show hungry just to be in the same venue as all these emcees they look up to, that i'm building a movement with, that i still look up to even as a grown man.
slowly we're forming. quickly we'll build.

I dont know how valid my opinion is but I think that we're missing the mark as a whole...
I like what someone said in an earlier statement about a "musical revolution." The artists in this town must move from the notion that the only way we'll be a thriving city is if somebody gets signed... What's needed is unity amongst everyone that graces a mic, everybody that has any creative abilities. Once we have a database, we can be stars in our own fuckin city. If you've ever noticed, there are only about three rappers that you can mention to ANYONE in the city and they'll know who the hell they are... So why not focus on the center? How do we expect the outside to fuck with us if we aren't even concentrating on each other...
I'm not interested in being signed right now.. What I really want is to restart this rap shit in KC and build our home.
Trust me, nobody would mess with Atlanta if there were only 1 person from there with a record deal. lol We wouldnt give a damn about snap, crunk or any of the subgenres native to Atlanta.
Kansas City IS on the map, right there in the middle... The niggas in it are confused tho...

Now we're getting somewhere.
We've agreed that we need to cultivate and nurture a more professional music culture in Kansas City, but we must also address the pathology of disunity on the local Rap scene.
That is being addressed as we speak and has seen progress recently.
I think we're moving towards becoming a more unified front, but that won't happen overnight.

key word network, network,network,
they are plenty of dj conventions across the us every year. tps, core,tj dj's,bumsquad, one in chicago, and countless others, people need to hit those up as a group and letting the presence be known. sometimes you pay to register or sometimes just hang out in the lobby and network with people and djs. They are many people across the us and the world who attend thse conventions. i mean its about getting out there. i respect about being a star at home but man its more out there. Live in your car and do shows and network, i know plenty artists who have done that including myself, sleeping in rest areas, crashing on couches and doing shows to get the sound out there. I learned this in corporate america, its about expansion and reaching out to other markets and exposing your sound. its im portant to get an infastructure at home, but its also import to network while it builds. People think atlanta, chi and stl was a movement, it was guys who were on their business and hustled and made tracks that appealed to everyone. Im not just talking about snap, crunk,or stlville. their sounds were universal. perfect example to learn from E40 listen to his verse in hustle by murs. also check out too short history

Man. This topic gets brought up like every 6 months since I moved here in 2000.
Everyone here is bringing up great points, but it seems like they are just that. Most of the active particpants of this forum have been in the scene for time now, so THEY ALL KNOW what must be done.
I think the scene is well beyond a well placed outline. Necia, Shad, Reach, and Miles are all points of reference for ACTION!! Instead of all this, how about a plan in which everyone takes a DECISIVE part??
Like..
- ok WG and ACE, ya'll are nice with the words, so ya'll hit up different forms of promo.
- Reach, Miles, and Sike, ya'll are great show promoters, so ya'll hit that..
- All the dj's like Barbaric Merits, Ataxic, and Shad smash the clubs
- USR and IN will hold it down with the podcasts... ETC ETC
Similar to the Hyphy movement, the excitement of participants of the scene will show the true support which in turn will bring "outside attention."
I personally don't see why that's in demand, but that's me.
[b:959825333b] FEEL ME or am I ONCE AGAIN ALONE ON THIS!!!???[/b:959825333b][/size:959825333b]

I'm with you Skeme, but...
The underlying causes of such a fragmented scene need to be addressed.
Lack of trust, lack of trustworthiness, the law of self-preservation, the great Rapper divide, etc.

Shouldn't all planning begin with an acknowledgment of limitations?

not only what are the limitations? but here's somemore
what are our strengths as a community of artists? play to your strengths
why is it so difficult to tour for independent artists? YES MONEY, TIME
BUT WHAT (the fuck) ELSE?
Why do we let the perception of LACK shape our behavior as artists, community? the left hand knows something the right doesn't good keep it that way!
What if we network across the great kc divide? both sides could learn mucho from each other? how does that begin ?
ask yourselves now, if there was a plan would you
a. get in where you fit in support the BIG DREAM
b. have a ego attack and sabotage yourself
c. explain your point of view, see where it would work within the
plan and do it
d. sabotage the BIGGER DREAM by dreaming too small
e. some of the above
f. all of the above
g. none of the above
you know who you are and how you are better than anybody what would you do
There is a skeleton plan for touring and building a machine to reckon with, its not the plan to end all plans its the bones of a plan and bones ain't shit without meat!
another thing, what if we used everything that has happened before locally and nationally, as a quide in the shaping of the meat for the bones.
you all know so much about artists, promoters, the labels, the snakes,
why not use that info to build a different kind a meat for your bones?
and yes . . . . . . I'm with reach every good business plan I have ever seen at some point asks What can prevent me from executing my plan and then uses the answers to generate a plan of action for those limitations.
for instance:
What if erbody stays just like they have been for each of the last three generations (thirty years) of hiphop culture in kansas city?
what limitations do you see ? look at the limitations of that behavior and create a plan of action to move beyond that?
in some ways our community has been doing that, its just in my opinion, the learning curve is just too fucking slow around here. one reason for that is the divide, another egos, another hiphop snobbery, another is ignorance, another lazy, another pride, another believing in scarcity, cross pollination is a cure for some of this shit ya dig.
must our community miss our chance to elevate and motivate once more
because of these things?
finally I have seen and participated in these circular conversations many years now and I can tell you one thing, there is a point where talking about doing it will kill all the energy for doing it like letting all the air out of a ballon it its flat.
I suggest that you who are ready stop talking about it with those who are only beginning to speculate or blowing off steam and get with those who are ready to act and make a plan and then execute something cuz it takes energy (lots of air) to venture in a new direction.
don't loose your energy here taking too long and doing nothing about it
You can blame this long rant on beasley, quincey and a pot slow cooking a chicken for stock. beasley started barking @ 4am 😯 woke my ass up, quincey 8) , beasley's best buddy conspired to get me down the stairs to open the door for an early morning piss 😆 , and the thought of loosing my stock 😥 before it became white chili or chicken noodle soup made me go into the kitchen. 🙄 crazy huh?
my ass is off to bed dammit. 😉
oh, its gonna be white chili tomorrow when I wake up 8) woohoo!

I love this skeme this is what get in where you fit in looks like.
no you're not alone.
executing your idea requires a bigger mission, ie the dream getting kc on the map will do nicely. requires trust I think there are those who are capable of tentitive trust. requires a marketing message KC, the center is now worldwide or something like that to anchor it. requires clear vision discussed and planned by each team this is doable. requires MANAGEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY TO THE TEAM AND GROUP. requires ACTION! AND a patience for building something solid. which brings us back to remembering the BIGGER MISSION and a certain joy and pride by each individual as they do their part for the whole.

PPS: Similar to the Hyphy movement, the excitement of participants of the scene will show the true support which in turn will bring "outside attention."
I personally don't see why that's in demand, but that's me.
I wanna give my opinion on why this is in system is in demand right now
labels are lazy as fuck these day. their strategy is if you build it we will come. so any area they has enough talent, savvy, support within and without from its community becomes interesting to the makers of fame.
Labels don't do DEVELOPMENT ANY MORE! trust
They back sure things and the surest thing right now is a ready made machine that can operate with out them. this way you can gets lots of the following: talent, developed networks, those hits are suppose to "just keep coming" after you tap a major vein.
second, if you are already creating, recording, promoting, marketing, networking, performing, touring, producing merchandise, they know you're hungry and if there are lots of folks with the hungrys, the better for their bottom line $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
so here's the deal, by the time you're doing all that with in your community for your selves, WHAT YOU REALLY NEED IS THEIR SYSTEM you know, MASS DISTRIBUTION, ACCESS TO NATIONAL CHAINS, CLUB CIRCUITS, NEWSMAKERS, shit like that only at their national level, cuz you got a regional following sew-ed up. ya dig
this is why this trend is so pronounced right now $$$$$$
I've said this before labels are venue capitalist (investers) in the industry of Entertainment. Not to be confused with "the arts" AND AS INVESTERS, THEY EXPECT A RETURN ON THEIR INITIAL MONIES, OR THEY AINT GETTING INVOLVED.
moral of this story, build yo own shit then make a MASS distribution arrangement with a distributor or a one record deal with a label and work all the shit you know to your favor, cuz you would be there to learn so you could recreate that shit when they discard yo ass for the next hype thing.
hugs

well spoken NRG...... Thats how the bay did it, they followed the groundwork artists like E40, Too Short, and they have a main distributor(city hall) to get their music out there and they hit the smaller markets across the u.s. and that is how the sound got out there. they didn't depend on commerical radio or major stores to get their sound out there. BTW the producer who produced I'm a flirt for R Kelly and Same Girl is from here his name is Lil Ronnie so KC is being exposed worldwide and he did a radio interview a while back and he is working on setting up something for artists in this market

😆
Honestly I have no Idea why KC has gotten it's due credit as being a producer of hotness....
!!!!BUT WE DO KNOW that what we have done so far....ain't working....I think we should GET THE HECK OUT OF KC!!!! THEN rep it to the fullest....because we (as musicians) know we got talent.....but apparently no-one else knows!!!!

I say go for yourself and get yourself out there...then the whole KC fame map action can happen.
If your goal is to put YOU on the map then by default KC will be on the map.
really worrying about getting KC fame is so frustrating and someone unrealistic. that energy is better spent on just doing your thang. Touring where you can. Networking on the web. and lets not forget the best thing.

things here are not ok and in my opinion that's why this question keeps coming up for local artists.
that's not to say that things are bad here either. some of this is about what your goals are.
so that's why sike is right, and reach and shad are right as well
its really not this OR that is this AND that.
if you have dreams of getting your music to as many folk as possible then touring may have to be in your mix (yes even with myspace and all the other social websites) getting in a van and risking that way will need to happen at some point. doin it live for the folk plays a role in getting their ear.
here over saturation is easy to do, its such a small listener community in some ways. hey but go out on the road and then book a few gigs here and if they are well timed, you can make an impact. there again tho if you have a quality, well mixed and mastered project, some t shirts, turntable mats, other merch to sale that will help spread the word, you and your project and help recoup all the cost to make that shit happen
indy launching of a new project needs to be a strategic strike for you to earn enough $$$ denaro to keep producing projects. that ain't about getting rich, that's about living to make another project and get it out to the people.
that is why reach shad and sike are right. making art is a self centered act that needs support for others

That's what I don't agree with.
I don't see how unity can be achieved if everyone is "going for self." That's what the status quo is and that's what is NOT working.
Of course self-progression is needed to further a collective, but isn't what Sike is suggesting, 1 Man Army syndrome?

No one can make it all on their own. There is always a supporting cast that the star of the show needs to play off of. But it does take one initial drive and effort to make things pop off. It's not easy. But it can happen. It all depends on what your goals are.

*Waving to the strawman*
You're oversimplifying.
Self-preservation doesn't necessarily constitute utter disregard for your contemporaries. I think you know me well enough to know that. I've always made investing in other artists a priority.
But at the same time no one is going to give themselves up for the greater good of the metropolitan area. No one should have to.
Distrust is a perennial flower here in Kansas City.
It's been one of the biggest obstacles to overcome in the unification of the scene often bandied in this forum.
I said from the beginning that we needed to address that first before we can dive headlong into "action".
There's a reason why we haven't been able to come by that unity.
And until we confront those issues we'll continue to struggle with that.
If artists can't trust one another there will be no widespread unification.
The most you can hope for are sects that find ways to be compatible.
And trusting other artists enough to unify requires being vulnerable.
Something quite a few artists would rather not be.
I'm sure we all have stories.
Despite how unsuccessful those attempts have been in the past I think we are seeing progress. Artists from very different perspectives are collaborating, sharing bills and giving each other mutual respect.
It's a process y'all.
Chill...

reach and skeme,
before I get misunderstood about my comment let me go one mo gin.
centered in self centered is the wrong word. I am really saying that art is self generated. that it's from an artist's internal terrain that the impetus to do something put something out to the world for them to comes from.
maybe that's closer to what I am trying to express.
you know me, words are important when trying to convey a feeling; art is a self generated internal act when it begins. a wanting to share something person with others.

No Necia. You were right on. People who know you, feel you. I do. Im sick of people taking every thing soooo literal.
Even Shad has told me before....."Do You!"
Iv'e heard this way too many time here. I truly feel like if i stop wasting my times here (HHKC). When I do, I focus all of my energy towards creating music, I will and can be the best at it. However I choose to get on the boards, rant and act a fool instead of concentrating on my "studies", i become productiveless (new word).
However, I tend to practice a little self control, and know not to waste the energy or movement of the sounds and rythms in my head, at the time I feel or hear them, beacuase I know I will forget or loose them. I sit down to record my mind and end up "working" and lose myself in the music and forget the boards.
I create a masterpiece for an Emcee to blessed upon.
Self centeredness for the betterment of everyone in my Hip Hop community.
Do Me!
Thats all I can.

The distrust is just one side of the coin.
There's much to be pleased with here in Kansas City.
Despite the spats there's a deep sense of community in the scene.
I apologize if I've given you the wrong impression.
That wasn't my intention.
Much of what has been discussed you'll need to experience on your own to truly understand anyway...
I'll just say this...
The same elements that you deal with in your daily life will present themselves along the way in your musical journey. Some good, some bad.
But in being a proud member of the scene I'll gladly take the good with the bad.
