Choosing a best local band is like picking a favorite child, but, to borrow from one of this group's songs, tonight there is no sidestepping. So with a heavy but resolved heart, we dub fair Doris Henson the best band in the land right now. Watching this band mature has been less like witnessing a child grow up than like seeing the boy next-door venture into manhood, pick up a guitar and start driving the girls in the neighborhood crazy. DH's second and most recent album, Give Me All Your Money, recorded in KC by Duane Trower at Westend and released on Washington, D.C., label DeSoto, becomes more compelling with every listen. At first, we thought the lone trombone (played by Mike Walker) was a kooky idea, but it grew on us, as did everything else about the band -- except for the pummeling riffs and Matt Dunehoo's androgynous croon and songwriting genius, which were instantly appealing. After a tour in support of Billy Corgan that made us all proud, Ms. Henson is at work on her next project.

[b:d6381929f6]David McCleary Sheldon[/b:d6381929f6] has a dangerous mind. Abhorring the shallow trappings of make-sum-noize hip-hop, Sheldon -- Mac Lethal to y'all -- spews smart, caustic, bleak, hilarious, slang-and-cliche-free verse with the inspiration and artfulness of a poet but the attitude of a reform-school dropout. At past nationwide Scribble Jam freestyle competitions, Mac's whip-fast wit has left big-chested MCs dumbstruck. And his writing has grabbed the attention of flagship underground rap label Rhymesayers, which is set to issue Mac's first national release early next year. Having heard early mixes, we'll be the first to announce that 11:11 is worthy of purchase, praise and repeated rotation. Hell, if it catches the proper hype, it could even change the state of hip-hop as we know it -- not because of the sounds (ably produced by Nezbeat and Been) but simply because of what Mac is saying, which is exactly what needs to be said in pop music today. But to hear what that is, you'll just have to wait.

[b:d6381929f6]Corey Aguilar[/b:d6381929f6] can't keep his hands off records. Between the time he spends in record stores and the hours he spins vinyl on the ones and twos, DJ Sku's thumb has been on just about every good hip-hop, soul, funk or rock record in existence. Born in El Paso, Texas, and now living in Lawrence, Sku (say it skew) has been battling in scratch matches since 2001 and has won four KJHK 90.7 Waxclash DJ competitions, all on the strength of self-taught skills. No one can take him on locally, and we'd put him up against the best in the country. Sku brings his fists-of-fury, battle-style scratching into all of his work, whether he's playing a house party or rocking a club. He also plays the spotlight-stealing sideman to MCs Approach and Mac Lethal, elevating a live hip-hop show from open-mike banality to mind-blowing performance art. In fact, it's hard to get down when Sku's spinning because it's impossible to take your eyes off his surgically precise hands. He practices the art of the live remix better than anyone we've seen, taking any two records and slamming them together to make something new without dropping a single beat or bead of sweat.

At last, Kansas City is free of the rock hegemony. Who are its liberators? Why, the two caddish-looking gents sipping tea (at least, we assume that's tea) on the cover of this still-steaming album. The men of SoundsGood -- producer and composer [b:d6381929f6]Miles Bonny [/b:d6381929f6]and MC [b:d6381929f6]Joe Good [/b:d6381929f6](real name Jamal Gamby) -- have been steadily honing their skills since their 2002 debut, Miles Bonny and Joe Good Present. Mixed by Good's brother, Jaz, this 15-song masterpiece establishes SoundsGood as one of the finest underground hip-hop acts anywhere. Bonny and Good met at the University of Kansas and began their career kicking off house parties. All of a sudden, Lawrence had a hip-hop scene, helped in no small part by Bonny's pioneering of Lawrencehiphop.com. They are shopping their album in New York; their hope -- and ours -- is to reach a public eager to share in the fun that these charming lads have brought to our city.
