Bush attack hit right note: Legend Nui Te Koha 28sep05 US soul star John Legend has supported rapper Kanye West's explosive comments against President George W. Bush. "It took a lot of courage to bring to light what most people were feeling," Legend said in Melbourne yesterday. "This situation, this disaster, just highlighted what it is to be poor in America." Legend is signed to rapper-producer West's record label. Two weeks ago during a telethon for Hurricane Katrina victims West claimed the government's tardy response to the crisis was racist. "George Bush doesn't care about black people," West said. Yesterday, Legend said Katrina's victims were caught in a poverty cycle. " It might be a mistake to say the reason why those people weren't rescued was because they were black," he said. "But I do think the reason they are poor is, in part, because they are black. And the reason they didn't get out of town was mostly because they were poor. "The class issue is very real in America. And this despite the fact the national economy is recovering." Legend said West's shock delivery in live television was classic Kanye West. "But any decision to speak out takes strength," Legend said. Legend, supporting the Black Eyed Peas tour, played a sellout solo show at the Mercury Lounge last night.
