There is alot of talk about hip hop becoming stale & monotonous.... so.... If you are a fan, where do you wanna see hip hop go? If you are a artist, where do you wanna TAKE hip hop? Out with the old in with new? Out with the new, in with the old? I for one am getting ready to travel to uncharted dementions but find it's hard 2 get people in KC in that "next level" mindset....not alot of risktakers here cuz they're to worried about their image (sorry.. had to stop typing to laugh) what about the rest of ya'll?

I am a fan 4 sure and what I would like to see is pure uninhibited expression, you wanna sing some rap some, paint it all blue instead of multicolors why not? you wanna paint my ceilings and or floors cool, put it all out there. hiphop needs us to be ourselves as for me and my art form) I'm attending a class (at 8:30 am and last till noon thirty 😯 yall know I dont' sleep) entitled"establishing a nonprofit organization". I don't know nuthin bout what i'm doing 😕 but hey I know one thing I gotta risk it! so that's the turn my creativity is taking. the art of grant writing, and the fine art of recruiting sponsors wish me luck fools 😛 What you gon do stand still or make a move? nrg

I definitely agree with miss NRG, uninhibited expression. speak your mind, express yourself, be heard... alot of artists do stuff thats "safe". fuck that, lol... me, myself personally, catch me down at Phenom Tues & Thurs, IRS every night Sun. thru Thurs., in class Fri. night & Sat. morn., then talking business with producers, promoters, and artists trying to collab whenever I get the chance...

i don't really want to put this in terms of backward or forward... sometimes a lot of it just isn't real enough... be it mainstream braggadocio or underground preaching... i want to hear a person talk about what they know/feel/are. less hip-hop by people, more hip-hop by homosapiens.

I know I'm one of the first people to bitch about the state of hip hop and all the constant gun-play, hustlin, and drug abuse in it... but right now, I think I kinda like the direction that hip hop is taking. I am an artist and I am doin my own thing. I think that alot of artists, even mainstreem, have began to take their own routes and be themselves. Another thing that I like is the crews. I think this keeps some of the true essence of hip hop in effect. This shows the hiphop community some strength and keeps everyone pushing for something. I would like for hip hop to take on, not necessarily a carefree attitude, but a non-cowardous aproach to the creative process. Dont sell out, just experiment and follow through. Something I had to make myself do is stop judging EVERYTHING as a hip hop head. If you focus attention away from mainstreem bullshit, you forget about it and are able to do YOU with no interuption. Also, know that wack music MUST exist to keep good music good. Ado

I think hip hop or whatever you wanna call it is completely going in the right direction. It KILLS me to hear all these supposed fans and KC dj's talk about how wack the game is, when they never (in my opinion)reference any relevant reasoning. I'm saying this because I see artists all the time that contradict the what I call "Golden Era Relapse Syndrome." No disrespect to Phism or Ben Fuller and Sku cause I'm fans of theirs, but they are saying that they are bored with the game. I don't see how because 2003 till now has relayed some of the most creative shit of our generation.. Artists like: - Black Milk, Flying Lotus, Bishop Lamont, REACH, Kanye, Oddisee, Kev Brown Groups like: - Pacific Division, Jaylib, Gnarls Barkley, SOUNDS GOOD, The Sound In Color Collective, Sa-Ra, Little Brother Not to mention the resurgence of legends like: - MC Lyte, Freddy Foxx, Ed OG, Pete Rock, Hi-Tek, Pharoahe Monch, J Dilla, Q-Tip etc.. have come out and I could keep going. I'm basically considered an old school Golden Era nicca too, but I'm not putting the blinders on and focusing strictly on the past, because that shit is over.. We can't bring it back, it was what it was and we appreciated it. The vets shouldn't act like the old men on the stoop complaining about how it used to be from now on, because that takes the credit away from the artists now that are being forward thinking and progressive in the spirit of true hip hop. Forums like this, Red Bull Music Academy, and MySpace open even more avenues for finding new music and connecting artists in the global music community. Anyways. In other words, shit is looking good now in my opinion. You just can't base the state of music on your limited knowledge (me included) of what exists out there.. because there is a lot more then you think is poppin.' Ya'll who talk shit obviously don't listen to my crew's podcast either... THE LYRICIST HOUR!!! We feature new dope shit every show. Get schooled people! It comes to me that part of the problem is in labeling stuff hiphop or not hiphop. whenever I talk about what I think hiphop is, or what I think artists need to do to have a level of success here and other places, someone is quick to remind me, that's just my idea about those things. this is where they usually go on to say that hiphop is defined by each person and no one person . based on this I don't no if you can really answer this question like hiphop is a thing that is evolving that you can direct en masse ya know really its more like where would you like 2 c yourself go? what do you think is your next step? whatever your answers are to these question will have an inpact on everything around you in some way including how you and maybe other perceive "hiphop"music, dance, djing, visual art, lyrics, sounds etc. what if hiphop is another word for creativity and self expression? kim yall

That's the discussion in a nut shell. This should really be internalized. Determine, for yourself, where you should be going...and go. One man's idea of what another man should be doing really doesn't amount to much. Do YOU. Excellent point, Necia.

yeah, i think around the TURN OF THE MILLENNIUM (i mean, 1998-2002) there was a sort of attempt to break off into subgenres that was pretty wholly rejected by the community, and i think it was really necessary. everybody continues to call it hip-hop or rap, when you could really break it down into a bunch of different categories.... whatever label to define backpacker stuff, gangsta rap, downtempo type shit, socially conscious hip-hop, breaks/party hip-hop, crunk, hardcore hip-hop, elemental whatever, scratch, blah blah blah.... but all of those things are more descriptions than genres. not to mention most of them no longer incorporate more than 1 element at a time, typically that being emceeing. like right now when i tell the kids i listen to hip-hop, or even when i say underground hip-hop, they think underground means fat tone, rich the factor, etc.

Hip hop is honestly the puriest form of self expression, for sum who dont feel comfortable in their surroundings, hip hop is the gateway to freedom. It's alwayz been that way which is why it has become as diverse as it has and it never went out to seek the approval of other cultures, politics, media,etc..those outlets came to seek the approval of hip hop! With such a powerful force that we all have our hands in, those that choose to indulge in it pretty much have a responsibilty to keep the game fresh with your own creativity & insight to sustain the basis on which it was created on.... Life sustains life...

Live bands is the main thing I'd like to see more of and in reality that seems to be happening more and more. On the hip hop is dead thing....I agree with Mac Lethal from the other post that it was taken straight from punk is dead, but thought of something that probably ties it together even more. Metal......remeber that genre, it was huge one minute and then just faded away. This is really about as close to that as it gets. Toss some money in the equasion or at least make it look that way, various styles emerge, some not true to "what it's about", the genre gets divided by so many sub-genres because everyone wants to be seperated from people who are in reality making the same form of music. When any newer genre of music blows up, it is going to fall. Hip Hop has been at the top for a while now and is due to fall if you ask me......and it probably won't be such a bad thing.

As a guy who might consider himself a member of KC's underground punk scene, I gotta say that the "hip hop is dead" sentiment that gets kicked around so much in recent years is extremely similar to that expressed in punk. Both of these underground communities understand that commercialization, coattail riding, and willful fuckin ignorance of performers has become top heavy. 30 years on, since rap and punk were born (a short busride apart, from South Bronx to the Bowery), historically there are more idiots than sincere artists. The sincere artists can do it for the the sheer love of it, and prove it through actual hard work and years of dedication, and that's a lot to ask for most folks. An older friend once told me: "There's only two kinds of people involved in an underground scene past age 30, people who know they can't live without this music, or grimey guys lookin to hit on college girls. Luckily the two are easy to pick out in a crowd, watch their eyes when you're on stage." Hip Hop is still a vibrant living thing as long as there's an active community that's inviting and rewards creativity. And there will always be one, no matter who fades from it, because young kids will require it. That being said, every underground scene needs people to step up and put their shoulders and money down.

What [i:8010eec48e]is[/i:8010eec48e] "hip-hop"? That question is the same exact question that turned "punk" into a market/ industry, and not a culture or attitude. People in the South say they rule hip-hop right now. People in the East say that the music from the South isn't hip-hop. People from the West feel whatever the hell people from the West feel anymore. People from the Midwest feel over looked like they aren't respected as people who make legitimate hip-hop. People from Europe feel like they should be allowed to participate, and be a part of hip-hop, but people give them shit and say "hip-hop is what is found in the ghetto." etc. Obviously there are tons of exceptions to the aforementioned list. But...what made PUNK, when it was PUNK, then shortly after HARDCORE-PUNK, was the ethos and attitide. Not the music, or the aesthetic of it. Bands like Minor Threat used bobby pins to hold their jackets together because their jackets were ripped, and it started a nation sweeping trend. Kids did it for no reason. It was just another element of punk rock's look, but what is overlooked is that it was a method of survival. It was DIY as fuck. Radio wasn't playing it, there was no set sound for it, it was just a giant network of underground bands who were allied with eachother, that helped eachother spread fliers, and music, and cultivated a very anti-mainstream, cult scene. Hip-hop, was the same way. It was a culture that embodied mostly NYC adopted forms of expression, that was a way to unite American minorities, and was barely played on the radio at all. It was a culture. I think what made PUNK and what made HIP-HOP was their anti-corporate direction. They thrived completely independent of finances. They were not radio campaigns, with billion dollar a year generating successes. So I ask you, HOW is hip-hop flourishing and alive? It's the most deeply divided, undefined, uninspired, corporately pimped movement to exist SINCE punk-rock. It's completely turned out by corporate America, with no definition, no leaders, no icons (save for the basically right-wing conservative rappers and label executives), and NO true identity. Who does hip-hop represent? I believe it's true that people argue over what hip-hop WAS, but mostly I think people argue over what hip-hop IS. It's a product man. It's a way to label a certain sound of music, just like "Light-Jazz", "R&B", and "Alternative-Rock". We can't say "hip-hop is everything, and everyone" because not everything and everyone represent hip-hop. The culture we are apart of is the culture that is just seconds away from the proverbial buzzer going off. On some THX-1138 shit. Get whatever you can financially, learn whatever means of survival you can right now, because over the next 20 years, some very nasty shit is going to happen to all of us. Barcodes, and computer chips, and Wal-Mart living facilities, and half-mast McDonald's flags with golden arches on jet-black backrounds. The music will always keep evolving and being argued over, but YOU get ready. Heavy artillery baby. Technology is about to start the finest, and most horrific war of all time.

Nice post, and I almost completely agree with you Mac, except: Punk and Hip-Hop mean more than product to a lot of people. The underground is a community, a place that, ideally, provides free shelter in midst of that impending/ongoing war between thoughtful people and idiotic consumerist culture. These communities have their own aesthetics and styles and sub-genres, but the underground core is going to always be there as long as anyone has a desire for sincere music. For music with soul. I'd only start arming myself against the corporations if I thought the underground got so successful that the powerful realized they were really losing their hold on the public's desires, which honestly, may never happen. Because if they did, they might do something rash. But come on, that'd never happen, right? [img:d9f7a5ca16]http://www.defendbrooklyn.com/new_store/image2.jpg[/img:d9f7a5ca16]

The divisive nature of the culture today is the by-product of its globalization. The more people ascribe to Hip Hop the more the overall ideology changes. You're bound to have differences. There's simply no way that can be avoided. Hip Hop is inspired in some spots and not so much in others. Local artists play hole in the wall clubs for next to nothing... That says everything about inspiration. Hip Hop is a beautifully ugly thing.
