Topic: Is there really a hip hop "scene"????
- Feb 8, 2007 08:54pm by ThirdUnheard
WTF happened to the hip hop supporters in the area???? I heard there were like 3 people at the G's Jamiacan cuisine show last night. Performers at the show apparently were Reach, The Soul Servers, Approach and Sku and some group called Midwest Invasion......3 PEOPLE!!! WTF!!!
I was at the Cage show and there were only about 70-80 people there.
I was at the Brick show a couple weeks back for about an hour and left because no one and I mean no one showed up to see Reach and Approach and Stik Figa play. I left cuz I thought the show wasnt gonna happen. Apparently it did I missed out. but WTF people!!
All the hip hop shows lately that I've been too either are not being promoted properly or people just don't give a fuck anymore. But the Ying Yang Twins in lawrence which I also attented was packed!! Like 600 -700 people in that bitch!!
I'm also a big supporter of HHHW and make it out there every other sunday. I love that vibe. Props to all the dj's that hold that spot down. But where are all the people that attend HHHW every Sunday when Hip Hop shows go down???? What is happening to this place?? I remember going to shows back in 2001- 2003 and those mothers were packed!! What needs to happen to get people out anymore??
Someone please let me know!!!

cultures need cultivating sometimes. the diehard heads: local artist can count on them cuz their heads and live and love hiphop but other people more new to hiphop need the help of the local scene to embrace hiphop in a deeper way.
this generation of fan only knows a little historically and doesn't have as deep /wide concept, perspective as those who know every lyric, and have a working timeline of hiphop from NY TO Cali, south from underground to main stream. they mostly have what the media tells them and what radio plays and images from VH1 and MTV. hiphop culture is so much more than the over simplified notions of underground heads , G's, and televison and record execs bitches hos, and bling, granola, conscious and sacred
these ideas are a part of the whole story but ONLY a part. What's missiing in their redition is the real people's stories.
Questions like the ones that get posted here where were you when you first heard this song or what song or what friend turned you on to hiphop
or one of my favorites, how old were you when you knew you were hiphop
Heads were there for most if not all of hiphop development infact hiphop from what little I have read, is 40 years old now.
Every person I have taken the time to share a conversation with about hiphop and their relationship with this culture KNOW when it happened, who they were hanging out it, what school they were going to, what the songs lyrics spoke to them, or seeing a first train panel in a different light, or that move by a b-boy that made them see everything different, or the way a dj drop his mix of songs that wake them up like they had been sleep walking before they heard it. In fact most have said almost these same words: Hiphop saved my life, hiphop kept me sane, I'd be in jail without it and things along that line.
I believe that as hiphop has mainstreamed (become a formula and less about the real peoples lives) is has become less personal, there are not as many people who feel it saved their lives, it has become entertainment in the loosest sense of that word( like disco was to R&B) so while folks may know some lyrics their relationship with them are different now
Heads love hiphop, they live hiphop, they need hiphop in fact they think hiphop.
with out these real interactions/commitments to this culture, music, creativity, way of thinking, historical perspective, is just a flat experience.
last night I was at the jump off, and hiphop was there too. I watched people who hold down their jobs, families, children, you name it living hiphop, connection, community, shared-ness for 3 straight hours, saying the lyrics, dancing, making knowing eye contact, smiling that smile that says you were there too and in contrast, I watch the joy of these people have an amazing effect on the people there who just happened to be at the jump off cuz its a bar.
by the end of the night, the folks who were out at a bar, had seen hiphop kc style full of love , joy, rememberance, comradie and strength/bond.
a dj, some heads, non commited observers were moved by the experience. I was smiling from ear to ear.
so what happened to local heads, top 40, record label exec and $$, apathy, negative press, violence, and more
what do we do now?
- Feb 8, 2007 11:01pm by Lucidialect
I think everybody that's supported this scene still supports it. But, after so many years comes more life responsibilities, prioritizing family and home, and for some of us more demanding jobs. So we have to be more selective of what events we go to.
I try and hit an event a week. Sometimes its more, sometimes less. Shit, it used to be every event that happened, period. And there were alot of people that felt that way. You'd get 50-80 people at the Brick, which is pretty packed for that venue. Sike consistently got 150-250 people at each El Torreon event.
But alot of that is promotion. And I don't know what to say about that. You want people at a show, get them excited for it. It takes flyers, posters, web posts, and not just one of those, but all of them. And then the show has got to be sick. Which, I'm not questioning the quality of Approach, Sku, Reach and Soul Servers for a set, I know from experience they all put it down. But that's the thing as well, I've personally seen every one of them perform more times than I can count. So, then what? Gotta make new fans. I'll still go to their shows fo sho, but not every time.

i don't have any money.
i kind of wanted to go see yakbidallz, mostly to support the darker side of hip-hop coming to town for once... even though i'm lukewarm on the weathermen.
i also would have gone to the show at G's but i had made previous engagements (which were lame) and had to work in the morning, and i had already eaten ;x ...plus G's isn't really a usual venue so places like that it's hard to remember.
but if you ask me, a true "scene" needs stability, especially of venues. the more people get comfortable with going to a place and knowing that they can expect an alright time, the more they'll continue to go. but i think there's a scene just because i know who a lot of people i see at shows are. i don't know how many of you hang out with each other regularly outside of events though.
i think right now hip-hop in KC is disillusioned. after probably a decade of all the major shows going to Lawrence instead, i don't expect there to be any shows and i rarely check the events page anymore... which makes me less likely to go to the all-local events too.
that being said, there's events like HH&HW that pull tons of people out on sundays of all days.
i know about 6 or 7 threads have ended in this conclusion, but kansas city hip-hop doesn't have enough young people. all the shows are at bars, which cuts off half your fan base. and older people are more likely to have jobs and kids and other responsibilities, plus, if i can use myself as an example, a lot less energy. maybe i need to join a gym.

Well school just started up a few weeks ago people are still getting into the swing of things, people work during the week, ect. The Ying Yang Twins mighta had alot of people but it got promoted well, was held during a friday night, and was in a college town.
BTW if Artist need me to get the word out about an upcoming show I gladly will go around town and tell people.

exactly Miles.
and every 6 months after we talk about it it's over right? til the next time somebody notices attendance to local hiphop events is dwindling again
what I have not heard really are any solutions that are action based by folks other than promotion and reaching youth
there is currently a thread where the youth are asking the same questions again when I read the post there, I hear its hard to work the system, or something about other folks taste in hiphop that doesn't fit their idea(s) of valid
in short these things are circular in nature. I haven't seen much full hearted desire for change beyond talk.
these issues are not unique to hiphop every genre has a group of followers, and some folks that come in later who fall in love and then there are folks just looking for a good time all of these folks are desired and coooool. no issues
what would happen if we stuck our chests out become less downtradened and wore our love of this music, culture, and its creativity on our sleeves, talked with folks non stop about the history of it instead of dissin those who don't know, what if each one of US became promoters of this culture.
what if everytime anybody gets press, radio, tv coverage for their project, they not only talked about their project, but used every opportunity to talk about the whole scene, culture, projects of others, the vision for the scene. and even the a Hiphop Agenda for the whole scene.
that's why my questions in the poll, and a thread asking you what your concerns/visions for the local culture are. what if we band together to formulate a solid agenda that addresses what we (local hiphop community) could use to make our whole lifes fit our vision and potential.
its frustrating to hear hiphop heads speaking from a victimized position more than an empowered position. NO ONE can pump us up BUT us.
there is no magic pill waiting out there, the magic is in each one of our own imagination, commitment, determination. Envisioning the better way it could be, believing it, and then addressing those things with individual commitment and action is the magic
nothing else just plain belief and action
part two
beasley was barkin so I'm back from our walk now. I wasn't done with my thoughts.
You are not the first generation of KC hiphop. you are more like the 2nd even 3rd. there's another generation coming up right now anti crew, pro rev, los cuz and more.
what happened to them, their dreams and visions? Are they still around?
what did they learn diuring their reign? woudl they share their stories with us, compare notes to learn what things we have all faced and that we may have in ommon.? if we would ask this in a serious way, document what they say, add our concerns to the list and create an highly individualized action plan.

i believe our music might count on the opposite side as the majority of the site...
if anybody would ever be willing to search for that in-between i'm sure i could talk J and Trav into...
guess that'd be a start. because as you see the most common factor of most of the budding scenes around the nation is how all the artist involved interact...
i was in ATL and heard two songs that sounded almost exactly the same
1st. "JUKE... YA BOI... JUKE JUKE... YA BOI. JUKE... YA BOI... JUKE JUKE... YA BOI..."
2nd. "DO... YA SHUFFLE... DO DO... YA SHUFFLE... DO... YA SHUFFLE... DO DO YA SHUFFLE..."
now as we all know, the common thing we'd see is a beef over who did it first, but no. instead they put out a version all together...
"JUKE... YA BOI, JUKE JUKE YABOI (WHILE I DO MY SHUFFLE FOLK)..."
its pretty inspiring... all the ATL collabo tracks, Bay Area collabo tracks, and look at their scenes...
i mean no offense to anyone involved, but to me it seems like every show thats being put on is a rotation of the same few people. the shows might be dope, but i even get tired of hearing D-Crew after so many listens...

Poor promotion, repetitive bills, overused venues, underused fans of the underage variety, a lack of scene cultivation, not enough recruiting of new fanbases, a centralized scene, and an overabundance of local shows altogether.
There you have it.
Most of us are guilty of 1, 3 or even all of the items on that grocery list.
Cold weather always plays spoiler.
That doesn't help.
We need to break out of the Midtown to Downtown connection.
We need to mix these bills up a bit more.
We need to book dates more strategically.
We may need to cut back on the number of overall shows.
We need to do better promotion of these shows as artists, promoters and venue owners/management.
We need more all ages shows.
We need to decentralize a bit (fans, artists, DJ's, graf artists, breakers, etc.).
I'm making a conscious effort to do more personally.
I'm just as guilty as the next man of getting "comfortable" and "too familiar".
It's just time to grow. Spring's coming...

The best option for local artists is to hit the road. It's the best way to circulate music, and it keeps shows here a more rare and anticipated experience.
I think if local artists really want to work together they should collabo on bigger shows, less often.

[b:65d5e759d1]I concur, but wanna add a point...
- Where is everyone conversating now? Where do most people check music? Where do most people catch "bulletin" style flyers notifying headz of events?
ONLINE!!
- I may sound corny and plugging ish by saying this, but.. the best way in my opinion for K.C. to build, publish their material, and support each other is online.
- That's why I've gone the podcast route with my partner Mas-Appeal to push and promote artists, because I do have a family and a 9-5 that doesn't permit me to hit the streets constantly for every show. Yet, I still wanna be in the scene and support.
- Podcasting is an amazing tool that can touch an infinite amount of listeners in a way that a flyer can't. It is, in essence, our own radio station. That's why major companies are getting on board. Isn't that what the headz always wanted??
- That's why I'm confused that this "phenom" hasn't spread in the area, because in other cities, like Jacksonville, Fl where Mas is, the concept is spreading like crazy. It caught on so quick, that Mas was invited to one of the major urban stations to discuss the premise of the show. Now we have recruited one of their dj's to participate in our future shows. The Lyricist Hour has an amazing following now, to the point where Mas flies me down there to DJ for the parties.
- I'm not trying to brag and boast, but I just want it to be known that we do have the ability to run the streets with the talent amongst us. Once we get the attention of the kids with the unity, the rest is a wrap.
- When each of us pushes the music of the community through our own networks, it will create a bubble... NO BRAINER! This will lead to more attendance to bigger shows and more awareness of album releases.
- In the age of instant gratification and ipods, kids wanna go to shows that they know what to expect. In reality, most local acts are WACK!! The audience knows this, so they don't feel like wasting their $$ on a guess. When they could check several artists that are on a show bill in 1 free mp3 podcast, what would prevent them from checking it and becoming aware??
- Also, HHKC is relatively a new outlet for the scene to communicate and is not FULLY exploited the way it could be yet. I know plenty of artists that don't even participate in the forum that could use it to create and promote their shows.
- Once all of these outlets become truly exploited and a true respect for each other's crafts in the community come about, then I believe we will see a turn around.
just my piece....[/b:65d5e759d1]

Yeah this idea surfaces and circulates about every 5-6 years with each newly graduated generation of artists as well and yes its circular too.
without someone willing to do all this work, money, a plan, strong will, some parent company footin the bills or a miracle this dog won't hunt either.
really I think most local artist would go on a tour once there was a tour, but set it up, come together to create, plan and execute, not. I dont' really think the trust goes that deep. Right under the surface there is competition bubbling as well.so that leaves someone to set up all that stuff and a bunch of folks wanting to go and I hear the pay is real shitty for the artist and even worst for the ONE PERSON who booked the shit. brings new meaning to 4 love of the game.
ANSWER ME THIS WHERE IS THE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR ARTISTS IN KANSAS CITY MISSOURI
we have recording studios, BUT ARE THERE booking agents? managers? touring companies? road managers, equiptment handlers, business manager, marketing and promotions companies.
REALLY ASK YOURSELF WHERE IS THE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THIS BUSINESS.
anybody know about this aspect of Kansas city? but again it cost money and takes time away from whatever work,
and BESIDES this thread was not about artists anyway it is about dwindlling attendance at local shows DO YOU THINK THE TWO ARE RELATED?
we have a generation of artists that erbody has seen for years from lawrence to K C its been saturated
this is where the go on the road idea begins but for us local folk there are things to do to help build more attendance at shows
Reach listed in his list and its a great list
but you know heard it before and NO ACTION before
I have seen this going on in kc and read about it before that
why did the jazz greats keep going pass kansas city in order to realize a wider audience? maybe that is just the way kansas city is
REALLY ITS ALL GOOD

Necia, you know there is no large scale infrastructure here. We're all artists. There are infrastructures, but they belong to the individuals who've been building them.
Mac is a good example of somebody who's built a strong infrastructure. He worked his ass off. He built his and connected what he built to a larger structure (Rhymesayers). Since then he's been branching his with Joe Good (with Black Clover) who already had his own foundation (Sounds Good).
I don't want to turn this convo into an analysis of individuals, and after I make this point I hope we won't spend any more time on these particular people. But I feel they make a good example.
People want to work together. But ambiguously invested artists are going to have a serious problem building something concrete. Soundsgood was concrete. Mac Lethal is concrete. It works. Alot of people in this scene haven't solidified their vision yet, which is fine. I'm somone who hasn't and really I have no wish to rush it.
Still, I know there should be more than there is. Someone with a business mind has to see the value in us and help us organize. That's on us to show them the value.

me neither, cuz it really is not about the few this convo is about the prepareness of the many. and your next statement is to the heart of the matter.

Yes they do to a point and then comes the competition and distrust and uncertainty. but they wanna do artist work together not business work together. Business is the part where you organize your vision into something you can execute step by step. when you are doing business, you have steps to take and you can tell when they are happening cuz something about your presentation changes. ie there is feedback one you know what to look for.
then there are those misguided souls who think becaused they rocked the crowd a couple time, they have made it. I was talking with a local aritst the other night about that mindset and we both feel sad when we see a promising artist who goes astray with thinking that's it and now they are worth $500 on a show bill. we have all seen them right?
Hell its hard to get your money after a performance any way and after all the hidden fees and out and out greed, you're lucky if theres $100 or two in your hand. but they don't know the business end of what they are doing so how can they be realistic about their request. MTV version
I offer an artist workshop for local artists. the whole thing is about solidifying your personal vision cuz frankly until you have put in that work, everything else can start to take shape. the response was pathetic and the workshop was not widely promoted which is not good business. But in terms of feedback from the artist community the fee was $30 per session and if I had given it for free there may have been takers. But I don't do free that way. I have learned that when something is free it is also undervalued and or taken for granted. once you pay (give) to learn (receive) then you take it to heart and it has value. Becoming real isn't cheap and it doesn't happen overnight for anyone but especially for self employed folks and Artists are definately self employed by definition.
[quote:c325692102]
Still, I know there should be more than there is. Someone with a business mind has to see the value in us and help us organize. That's on us to show them the value.[/quote:c325692102]
here I will briefly name names. Edwin morales, James Christos, Mac,Joe Miles, and Sike and a few other folks have stepped out on faith because they see the talent and its potential and they better than me can tell you the tells of on the road. I can tell you this, if I spent alot of time "organizing opportunities " for artists personally I want to receive some things in return, not all of that has to do with money.
so I would want them to help me build, I want a simular level of commitment with the recognition among us all that we are all taking a risk here
I want to present a plan of action , have us discuss how to execute and know it will be executed ( follow through)
no body can skate, the day artists being signed, developed and cared for without expected millions in return IS OVER YALL.
ITS DIY ALL THE WAY, did you read that article I posted about MUSICTODAY company?
its a blueprint of sorts.

For the record - I have read every comment in this thread thus far and I feel like this is one of the best threads I've read on this site in a while. I know the conversation is a circular/ re-occuring thing; but I definitely think it's a necessary one that everyone at least asks themselves about from time to time.
I think the question in itself is a valid one. I don't have any kind of solutions to offer up or anything like that, but I wish I did. There are some hella' good points being made in this post though.
I just ask that you guys keep this discussion going and don't let it go away and then reapper 6 months from now as some type of complaint that everyone brushes off as "common place".
I'm not really in the scene anymore - but when I was in; one thing that I noticed is that there are leaders in this scene that people would follow in a grand scheme to benefit KC - BUT - there are no leaders in this scene who want that position. I don't call is selfish - I call it common sense.
I know it seems common sense for the KC scene to rise - and I really mean that, hiphop should become what Jazz once was to this city - but do I see it... not yet.
Whatever the solution is to "encouraging the scene from within" - it's going to take a very selfless person or group of people to do.
I know this conversation will fade, but I also know it will be back if no action is taken on it this time around. I hope I have something to offer then in the form of a feasible solution.
Plus, I haven't been here that long (I got into this scene at 16 - stopped rhymin' at like 19; and now I'm 20, wrestlin' with whether or not to approach the hiphop scene again --> so I've got 3 years to speak to); I trust what Necia says when she talks about basically this wave of interest and non-interest in the music here. Right now we're in a down time in my eyes - but I know it'll be pickin' up soon.

Cold Crisp air has a way of bringing clarity:
with that said, I offer this as a way to clarity
if you are wanting to become a Professional artists consider this
Are you willing to do the following:
have you thought about where you wanna go with your talent
have you started to be specific with those thoughts
have you made a written plan out of your vision
do you look at that plan at least once a week to remind yourself
where you are going
have you showed this plan of ACTION to your closest circle of friends
does your family know how important this is to you
and
do you have a product ie cd, paintings, compilation
(something people can take from your show)
if you do have a product, Are you saleing it/
if you are, have you worked about a budget for where the money will
be reinvested for your future growth?
are you saving ALL THE MONEY FROM SALES?
Do you track your inventory?
and
do you work harder than anyone to keep up with your fans
share information with everyone you know including family and friends
are you on myspace sounds sonic, and every other world wide social page
do you post a blog at least 2 times a week
do you have email accounts specific to your career
do you answer fan letters
if you answered yes to most of this then I would say you are taking your talent and a possible career with that talent SERIOUSLY
if not YOU STILL HAVE A WAYS TO GO before you would be an real asset to yourself or any touring situation.
if you are serious about music as a career then here what's next
continue to do all the above while finding others who are doing
all the above
make the next plan how to go on the road with your talent know that you will have to work even harder now that there is more than you to deal with
be prepared for personality and vision differences and create a plan of how you will deal with these issues.
at the first sign that these difference are a problem, talk it out to see if there is any solution if there is none, get ready to move on to another person or person that are a better fit.
the weight of such differences without a solution on any collaboration is enough to break it down in a short time. nobodys fault just truth MOVE ON with your vision until you find the next person you can build with
work with not only artists who make music but draw into your circle people who do thought as their artform. enlist their help (listen to, pay for, respect their talent) to create a realistic achievable plan of action and then redouble your efforts
if you choose this BUSINESS of music route, then know that you will be doing everything involved to make a success from it including booking shows, marketing, making fliers, being in the studio, producing your own product, networking with everyone not just other artists, working yo ass off day in and day out, resisting temptation of spending, partying, shit you don't need, thinking you 're all that and any other time /money consuming actions that make it hard to live your vision and that if you are not ready to do that, then you maynot want to MAKE A LIVING from your art. AND THAT IS ALL GOOD TOO, but it really helps to CLARIFY what you want from your art.
if you love to do it and its fun and you have a job that pays for your life and all this makes you happy and you don't want to make a profession of it, FINE do just that. that's good enough isn't it. happy is the ultimate vision, contentment ya know

and. . . .. . . . .. . . . . . how does that really figure into the BIG PICTURE OF KC HIPHOP?
[quote:2afaa7566b]if anybody would ever be willing to search for that in-between i'm sure i could talk J and Trav into...[/quote:2afaa7566b]
in between what , hiphop? I know this arguement well. its the split that no one will confront openly. its the how come conscious guys get the press and the eastside of kc gets not love sept from its own convo.
its the difference in lifestyles, the are you down or not, G or not stuff.
listen ace, is hiphop a culture large enough to encompass everything that is hiphop, even what the labels have force fed us to the underground? why is hiphop allowing ANYONE to define it: labels, artists, the press, critics, anyone? now that is a real question
and why are we even thinking there has to be a stand taken by us on any of these OUTSIDE OF HIPHOP observers comments?
[quote:2afaa7566b] guess that'd be a start.[[/quote:2afaa7566b]
and one that comes up periodicallly with little or not action to it. and why, cuz no body has yet been consistent in pursuing it as a REAL idea. it shortly breaks down into petty disagreements of what hiphop is and isn't or ego duels or some dumb shit and then dies
[quote:2afaa7566b] because as you see the most common factor of most of the budding scenes around the nation is how all the artist involved interact...[/quote:2afaa7566b]
AMEN and then some. and what I can tell you is that its clique-ish here: maybe because there is not BIG PICTURE vision of or for the KCHIPHOP community.
when this notion of KCHIPHOP COMMUNITY IS PUT TO THE TEST here's what you run into west vs east ( be it KC or National) , Mainstream vs Underground, Lifestyle differences, haters on both sides of the thing.
[quote:2afaa7566b]i was in ATL and heard two songs that sounded almost exactly the same
1st. "JUKE... YA BOI... JUKE JUKE... YA BOI. JUKE... YA BOI... JUKE JUKE... YA BOI..."
2nd. "DO... YA SHUFFLE... DO DO... YA SHUFFLE... DO... YA SHUFFLE... DO DO YA SHUFFLE..."
now as we all know, the common thing we'd see is a beef over who did it first, but no. instead they put out a version all together...
"JUKE... YA BOI, JUKE JUKE YABOI (WHILE I DO MY SHUFFLE FOLK)..."
its pretty inspiring... all the ATL collabo tracks, Bay Area collabo tracks, and look at their scenes...[/quote:2afaa7566b]
yeah that's cool and yes we have the talent, potential, and makings to do the same thing, but here's the deal.
I don't think everybody in ATL OR THE BAY or anywhere is ALL doing this TOGETHER (unified) ya know. its probably happening among folks who recognize a couple things:
1. they are all in this together
2. check your Big Ego at the door
3. For it to work everyone has to be down (committed to it)
4. there is probably someone involved who is great at marketing, organizing, communicating the vision, plan and actions not only to the folks collaborating, but to the fans and followers especially.
5. when there is a problem, somebody is solving it and selling the solution and erbody else is BUYING and ACTING ON IT.
6. they are not letting anything like what hiphop is /isn't or any other
devisive opinions stop the creativity or the break down the big picture.
they self check their own EGOS before they let it get in the way of progress.
7. they believe in what they are doing and they are workin their ASSES off to make it happen
8. They have identified a plan of action they can all get behind, each knows what their part of it is and THEY DO IT.
they have picked SOMEBODY (S) to RUN SHIT, LEAD, MONITOR THE PROGRESS AND MAKe ADJUSTMENTS as needed TO THE PLAN of action
[quote:2afaa7566b]
i mean no offense to anyone involved, but to me it seems like every show thats being put on is a rotation of the same few people. the shows might be dope, but i even get tired of hearing D-Crew after so many listens...[/quote:2afaa7566b]
yep and that is pretty much all that can happen until you realize you might need each other ie come together to create a unifyinig vision, plan, desire, committment to make the next larger thing come into being . and this is where some rise and some fall, cuz without a plan that sees the value of the banding together of the CREAM ie estabished artists (not everybody is ready) the only left to do is for each little pocket of success to strike out for itself and try to make that next leap on its own
this I have seen for at least 2 generations of hiphop artists with my own eyes.
at the top of their game several established artists have either banded with others at the top of their game( combining their resources, contacts, and talents) or decided to do more of the behind the scenes work by entering it from the promoter.booking touring side , or while being revered locally, stepped out of the limelight and either reached out beyond kc to connect with others of their same productivity or my least favorite, slowly disappeared from the scene, usely lost to us except as a memory. dammit
the cycle I named above is not new and plays itself out with each new rising generation of artists no matter what genre. I think there are a few other options available, but only to those who see that a larger view could benefit themselves and others
while the idea that someONE could lead anything that does understand where its wants to go is not far fetched, it is fool hardy for someONE to take this notion on without an equally impressive committment back from the folks who stand to gain from these efforts.

[quote:dda6b09854="MILES"]someone always asks this about every 6 months.
and it's never me.[/quote:dda6b09854]
exactly. i think when someone is really grinding hard, and grinding the proper way, they see the results on an individual level.
the word "scene" is a tricky thing to define. ok, so no one showed up at the cage show. is it safe to say that no one really cared about that show?
if by definition, we are asking if there is a large mass of people that faithfully, and unconditionally support whatever record/group that comes out of kansas city, then no, i would say there is no scene. but would you want that? that would mean that all someone has to do is put out a record or do a show and they would get complete support for it.
no, kansas city hip-hop does not have a fanbase. because not all kansas city hip-hop is deserving of a fanbase.
people like sike and miles put in elbow grease to make shit happen for themselves. when people show up at their shows, or buy their records, it's because they grinded hard and didn't rest on their laurels depending on the "scene" to support them.
- Feb 10, 2007 06:57pm by StikFiga - "i could never be a thug, they dont dress this well"--Malice of the Clipse
i think a scene is a group of artist who supportive of each other and network with each other, to bring music to people you region/city/or locale. basically a glorified clique. thats all it is.
and like mac said, im not completely intrested in that.
alot of people have so many conflicting views on what should be considered good or bad, that it becomes silly to even argue. people should just do them, and work hard at that, even if no one is intrested locally. i dont care about being recognized locally as i probably should. people arent goin' to be supportive if they dont want to, and they really dont have to, and no one should expect em to.
the grind is hard to define to me as well. where im from its runnin up to people at the gas station barber shops and at stop lights etc. askin people to check you out. for some people its typing away sendin' out emails, and networking with people who got something goin' on.
its all stuff you gotta define for yourself and yourself only.
for me, i could careless about the scene if the music aint good. and i dont think i should be told who to, and who not to support.
in addition to that, people have different goals. some wanna tour the country independent route, college spots, white kids who only like Atmosphere and J5 when it comes to rap. some want to be rich and famous and put the town on the map. neither of them is wrong, just different, but it doesnt necessarily mean we should be holding hands and singing around the camp fire.
i think im rambling. but i guess in short, im like who cares. just do what you do, and if find like minded people, no matter where they live, connect with em.
in Memphis, theres a "scene" its not what some would say is conventional, theres few shows, a radio presence, and supportive purchasers of product. promo vans and the like. something the average "backpacker" would clown. but that how they gettin it! and sellin 20-30,000 copies of there discs regionally. Gangsta Blacc and Playa Fly, people most on this forum will say they think is killin hip-hop, well that IS hiphop in Memphis, and its workin'
i just think its up to you, do what you want and can live with in the mornin'.

Yup Miles, you are correct. I was the last one who asked that question and found that there is no reason to ask it.
Now... A rant if I may...
This is one major way that Seattle is kickin our ass!!! Attendance! I see fools in slacks, ties and skirts fresh from work rockin it at hiphop shows.
I guess when you have a "real" job that means that you don't support hiphop anymore?
I don't know who's been baking brownies full of shit but anyone who believes that had a heaping helping.
Going out doesn't mean get falling down drunk to the level of being unable to perform your jobs tasks the following day.
Even if you work at 6am, as long as you're home by 12am you should be able to get at least 5 hours in (PLENTY).

with my zine, demencha, i've recently hooked up with Jeremy McConnell who was the editor of flavorpak back in the day. Since he expressed interest in getting down with my zine, I've been gushing with excitement. I got some really good ideas for some comics that we can work on. I just got off the phone with him not five minutes ago. Hopefully we can manage to get together again this week. I want to pick his brain on how he built flavorpak into what it was.
What I realized about FlavorPak, after Jeremy gave me some old issues, is that if I want my zine to be anywhere in the realm of success as FlavorPak, I've got to get more people on board with it. FlavorPak had at least 20-30 people working on a single issue. That's the kind of networking I have to do.
a friend told me the other day that people in the underground rap circle are holding onto their artistic vision like a newborn baby, not wanting to expose it to anything outside.

The Scene in KC.
Well Well Well. I feel there are two scenes in kansas city, the scene that gets exposed and the scene that does not. Alot of issues came to the forefront last night at the show. A certain artist addressed some of the issues that people have been keeping quiet about for a while. Somepeople have broke their backs and spent countless hours, times away from fam, on the road trying to get the scene noticed on the bigger issue and none of this is out in the public. I can't front I felt proud for my people for making comments last night and if people were offended lets sit down and discuss this is a non club environment. You have people moving units, packing clubs and out there grinding for the city and they are not being respected because we don't fit a certain image. Im sorry but there is more to this city that just being dope underground, its cool if you can rock 1 or two venues but a true artist can take is show and rock anyone from the hood to the suburbs to the country and very few artists in the city can earn that title. I think back to a song by the Khemists where Joc states of earning the respect of both the gangsta and the underground cats and alot of the Icons of the city show people love its like a new generation of people are offended about speaking out. Yeah alot of us are stressed, tired, upset about not being noticed becuase we are carrying on the fight for the people we feel that were not recognized its alot of icons of the city who havent seen any coverage and its time that issues need to be brought to the forefront.

i agree...
..i do this.. and i believe most artists set their own standards..
you can't do what anyone else does..
..and they cant do what you do
eveyone abides by their own plan..
and you just do you
and that goes for everything..
maybe this "scene" just isn't part of everybodys plan..
..maybe poeple are thinking bigger than just whats going on in kc?
i know i am. i know that im trying to reach every individual i can.. whether they be from kansas city, or the phillipines
to me the scene is hip hop.. no matter where your at.
but then again.. maybe people aren't setting the bar high enough for themselves and they are simply just existing, and they know they can just put a couple raps to beat well.. so they do it.
and thats fine, if thats what you want to do, aint nothing wrong that.
if its dope.. i know i'll be listening.
..anyones capable of anything; mind over matter.
i think we question the scene..
b/c its part of our everyday enviroment..
and we view it as that baby step towards progressing...
towards something bigger.
and the fact no one is aiding us to take those steps...
makes things seem kind of monotinous..
and where like.. what the hell?
maybe we're just at a crossroad..
where the older generation is ready to move on to bigger things..
..and the younger/the next generation of artists
is prepped for those baby steps?
experience is nourishment.
which would also explain all the commotion about more all ages shows.
i think people are ready for "whats next"

Couldn't have said it better myself.
This business has and never will be static.
There are no definitions save those you set for yourself.
Everyone's grind is different. Everyone's goals are different so ultimately... "There is no spoon."
Ultimately definitions lead to oversimplification and don't take thought of the inordinate number of factors in play.
It's always disappointing when the numbers aren't quite what you expect, but I've learned that there is value in even the smallest crowd. I can attest to that personally. That night at The Brick, ultimately, wasn't the disappointment I thought it to be initially. The few people that did show, eventually, were quite receptive and appreciative of the performances rendered by myself and by Izmore. I had to re-evaluate and ask myself what was really important. And I left as satisfied as I had ever been before.
Do YOU... Love the music.
Love the people you're sharing the music with.
That's all I really know.
What's for lunch?

You would lose your job for going to a hiphop show or two a week?
5 or 10 bucks is gonna send your world into an uncontrollable downward spiral?
I think that's a little extreme.
I'd definitely lose a few hours of sleep to support something I love and provide a "scene". Scenes attract people, which in turn builds a larger fan base for local talent including yourself. Once your following becomes big enough you could possibly feed your family off music. Artists are doing it right now. Yeah, you're right, I guess 6 hours a week really isn't woth it, but the forty you put in makin someone else rich... Priceless!!!

i have to concurr with what Stik has mentioned about music vs. providing for your family, to add more perspective i figured i'd add my 2 cents.
i can only speak for myself but i'll go out ona limb and assume that any musician w/ a family whether established or newly blossomed has struggled with prioritizing between their families' needs and that of what they seek to do with their music. i'm newly married in the grand scheme of things (since 7/20/05) and my son just turned 2 years old in January. And, i've had my own personal struggles trying to find a balance between making moves that are beneficial to my pursuit of music and that in those moves i'm not taking away time, energy, and most importantly money from my family. my situation is different though in ways because i'm not the proverbial 'bread winner' in my marriage at this time. but, i know that the part that i do bring to the table is vital to the whole of our family. and the part that i do bring less than 5% probably comes from anything i do or have done with music. i would love to drop an album or mixtape every couple of months, Lord knows i have enough material lying around to. but if it comes down to staying up on bills or even getting ahead on bills or putting out some product my decision is clear. i have goals for my family as i'm sure Stik and every other father/musician does that outweigh those that i/they have for music.
the JD and Stik debate is apples to oranges really bc you both have separate perspectives on life. if i was single w/ no responsibilities and basic ulitilities to pay i'd be 'Go Getter' of the year trust, but i don't have that 'freedom' due to the life that God has blessed me with to do everything. i use to make some selfish decisions early on in my relationship w/ my wife ripping and running around doing things i felt i needed to do. dropping my last 30 to fill the gas up, and then going to do a show at The Hurricane where Reach had to come out of his own pocket to give me my $12 cut of the door. which in the end paid for the gas it took for me to get from Leavenworth to Westport leaving me with nothing monetarily to show from it. i refuse to put myself and more importantly my family in those type of situations anymore. i think sometimes another man's 'sacrifice' could be a 'set back' for the next....it's all in perspective.

Priceless!!![/quote:c2e2de8953]

[quote:d83c8f710c="DjShad"]The Scene in KC.

Okay I'm just gonna answer the original question.....
There is a "scene" right now....but in about 20 years there wont be....y'know why...GLOBAL WARMING!!! WE ARE GONNA DIE!
We need to give hip hop a rest, and look at the environment....
Now I'm not a environmentalist but we need to focus on some different things every now and then so as not to blind ourselves from other far more serious current events....

My fault Stik, but your post read like a stab at something I posted from my heart and I really don't see how I was supposed to perceive it any differently.
My life is like this...
Kids - Not until I'm sure that I'm in love with a woman and financially stable enough to hold that level of responsibility down.
Spouse - Me and the last one split due to differences in the visions of our future.
Basically I work, make beats, write rhymes and party when I feel like it. Yes, I can respect what you're saying about being a provider to a family. I also think that the possibility of supporting a scene even once a month is totally there.
- Feb 14, 2007 08:43pm by maclethal
But even once a month, why should someone have to spend money to support something if they don't like it?
Kids that come to my shows like my stuff, but that doesn't mean they like everything from KC. In fact, they may not like anything from KC except my stuff.
Kids that go to your shows may hate my stuff.
There are people that would rather sit at home watching reruns of WINGS on USA, aggravated, bored out of their minds because there is nothing interesting to do, before they attended one of my shows.
See? I claim to make rap music. You claim to make rap music. But it doesn't mean that people have a responsibility to support something if they don't ENJOY it.
That's the problem I have had, and will always have, with the ideaology of a "scene." If a scene comes to life because enough artists have similar fan bases, motives and ideas, than so be it. But if it doesn't?
If you never see a scene blossom in Kansas City?
Especially because people don't like going to shows full of knuckleheads and thugs that start fights?
If you DON'T SEE A SCENE COME TOGETHER HERE...?
A scene that artists can tap into, with a healthy reserve of fans to circulate music through.
If you DON'T see that. And honestly, in this area, I can pretty much promise you that you won't see that, unless all of us get our own dedicated followings, and decide to intermesh them with eachother.
If... you... don't... see... a... scene... blossom. I have 1 very important piece of advice for you, and I say it with the most sincere vocal tone, and genuinely compassionate, understanding heart (because I have paid a lot of dues, and understand not being noticed and supported)...
BUILD YOUR OWN SCENE.
Not the KC HIP-HOP SCENE.
Build YOUR scene. YOUR fans. YOUR crowds. YOUR following.
D.I.Y. FOR LIFE.
DO IT YOURSELF.

No kidding kid.. well said. This is what I was trying to explain to Reach in reference to the James Christos rant.
DON'T HATE IF NOT EVERYONE RIDES THE NUTS OF EVERY KC ARTIST.
Scene support comes from a love for the music, not the artist or his work ethic. All that builds respect, but not the love. Just cause you grind out and all that, that doesn't mean you HAVE to HAVE the love of hip hop fans.
Get outta here. What happenned to the good old days when if you weren't fealt it was....

I think you're being a bit disingenuous Skeme.
I was not a party to the Christos commentary of a couple nights ago, but I'm fairly confident that you're not spelling it out as in-depth as you could. I say that because Christos is a sharp guy. Well traveled and a veteran of the local Rap community. I'm hard pressed to believe that everything he had to say was baseless and without merit.
As I told you just one day ago, you owe him a bit more than a thumbnail assessment of his opinions. Have a heart-to-heart with the man and I'm quite certain you'll walk away with a deeper understanding of how he feels.
I have no bones to pick with ANY ideology that rewards hard work and diligence. One that places the responsibility of building a fanbase squarely on the shoulders of the artist (ie, DIY).
Here's the thing though...
The overall assumption is that personal taste is the only variable in play. That's the only part of this discussion that isn't quite lining up for me.
I'm not the least bit offended if someone isn't interested in my work.
That comes with the territory. And I hate to speak for Christos, but I honestly don't think that's his ax to grind either.
Me thinks it's quite a bit deeper than that.
A number of people, in this very forum, who have NOTHING at stake from an artist standpoint have said the same things that Christos said recently (according to Shad). Don't gloss over that fact.

I wouldn't call what Christos stated a rant this past sunday. It is being felt by artists who don't fit into a certain "mode" in this city. Ive heard it from various underground artists, icons in this city and cats who represent the other side of "hip hop". People are tired of being typecasted and the story not being told. You have cats like heet mob making moves with chuck d and various other artists are making moves throughout the u.s and their story it not being told and the sad thing is, its right in front of people, all they have to do is look. I know some journalists who were in the building that night and they werent offended by what was said. If people were offended by the statements, people are willing to discuss why they are feeling that way. Its not just one performance, its years of crappy promoters not paying, events that are bypassed by certain artists because they would upstage the main act or people on the bill, we don't play certian games or act a certain way its not being covered, people who appeal to a different demo not being addressed because its not called "hip hop." People just want the other side adressed not just one form of hip hop. I mean by people judging the other side of hip hop, your no better that the old folks and the label reps in the 70's who said rap was a passig fad.
If anyone whats to question the statements made, im willing to have a face to face about whats really going on

Well, I feel completely what you are saying with Reach on that stuff.. but, I don't think he should've addressed the crowd that way. He was on a chair cursing at the crowd!! Why do you think people got offended?? It wasn't because he was performing or speaking his feelings. It was because he was negatively generalizing. Those that feel like they are supporting don't need to be subject to that.
He needs to go get at those he has a problem with or ANY OTHER OF YOU that feel the same way. Don't rant!! Sounds like you throwing a tantrum and shit!!
Certain dj's there even got offended. I understood what he was saying, but damn HAVE SOME TACT MAN!! Address people on an album in an interlude, or come out with your own publication. That's what BLOGS and forums are for.
You shouldn't have to defend him on here, Shad or Reach. Let him speak for himself or any of the cats you are saying that feel the same way.
I also have a podcast they cant vent on. I've been trying to have face to face interactions with you for a minute Shad, so you or ANYONE ELSE IN THE CITY that wants to vent, HOLLA AT ME. You all know how to get at me. That's why me and Mas are pushing this avenue.

those issues were addressed with those people and nothing was done with it so its either let it lie and hope no one say nothing or bring it to the forefront and get people talking in public. I've meen a bunch of us have been on the kc chitlin circuit for a long time and even hit the road to get respect in various markets in where kc have been looked down on i.e. are they acutally rappers in kc or the classic "rappers graveyard"if you want to holla at christos i will give you the number or pass his number to you. Ive even brought up a few times about the situation going on at the de la show a few years back, we tried to be peacefull and let things happen naturally but as with alot of people in this city we are tired of sitting back and waiting. On his album he does address the issue and it has been selling well at 7th heaven and other avenues including ebay where japan is picking up on his sound and alot of other cats like sg,gunn jac and a few others. if dj's got offended and i did hear a few comments i am willing to discuss that with them.

Aighht.. well, if all the other avanues were exhausted, I believe he either should have..
A. Said so at the beginning to prepare virgin ears... or
B. Demonstrate the frustration in a more organized manner.
For people like me who don't know his discography or whether he has addressed the issues with the media, how would we know the background??
We just got blindsided with negativity and vulgarness. That's what I'm saying. If I didn't know dude personally, I would just say he's just one of many MAD RAPPERS who don't get the light they want.

try not to kill the messenger of things that aren't pretty
also
I'd like to know these things
whose responsible for HIPHOP and HOT Wings now that Allen and Ashley are no longer in town.
Who is negoiating with the peanut in situation like these where there are problems and opportunites
who is in charge
who is taking photos and putting them in the photo album
who is taking care and making sure the place doesn't self destruct and get so disjointed that it implodes on itself.
who is the leader now that allen is gone and what are they doing to anchor the night
I sat next to some guys who were beefing all night. First timers drunk and how come no body put them out period?
why is no one talking about this,
why is no one talking about the kitchen being closed early due to understaffing, and obvious frustration.
how come no one is telling us about what's going on with Bear
why is no one talking about having to have a show of force (become bouncers) and all the tension, vulgarity and negativity that was coming from those guys coming in and out making angry gestures
how come no body has mentioned that there was a flier cirulating from the peanut managment [b:70d36b2c60]saying if tagging doesn't stop hiphop and hot wings is over [/b:70d36b2c60]
First this statement, I think the house dj's should have given up the tables so they could have started on time. could be a sign of disrespect to any artist not honoring the time commitment
personally, I think that night was out of balamce anyway, because it felt fragmented all over up and downstairs. its happened at hhhws before and we always just try to make the best of it

That's beside the point though.
This is an issue that existed long before Christos' Sunday night commentary.
I'm not a Christos' apologist Skeme and I think that's a bit unfair for you to say. I've said as much and have tried my best to tread lightly so as not to speak for anyone other than myself. I've maintained from the beginning that I can simply identify and understand his perspective.
And again, I think for you to be so critical for the manner in which he lobbed such a complaint is a bit hypocritical seeing how you haven't addressed him personally and are utilizing HipHopKC (a site he is not a regular poster of) as a means to rebut.
But to the overall point, no he doesn't need my vindication whatsoever.
He can speak for himself. Which is why I suggested that you have him as a guest on TLH to discuss matters in more depth.

Hypocritical?? What? I'm not addressing an innocent crowd. I'm addressing a forum of attendees that are looking to read this content.
NO COMPARISON.
But anyway, besides the point, I'm NOT trying to attack the homie. He is a good dude. I was simplying saying, me and obviously a few others thought that HHW wasn't the time or the place for such an outburst.
Why does that even need a rebuttal? I can't have an opinion without being challenged?? Obviously not.

I respect Christos more for saying what he said in person to the crowd, as opposed to if he typed it up on a message board. And this coming from someone who writes for the pitch.
Aside from that, the aggression in his tracks and his stage manners reminded me of Tech.
I loved it. He kicked that crowd in the teeth. At one point people were just staring at him as if "this is soooooo not meant for the peanut."
I hope nobody's hating on him cuz he spoke his mind.

by who? I feel you reach but what's your point now. you have said this several times in this thread can we move on to something that gets us moving on this you know really every body on both sides of this issue gotta stop trying to place blame and just decide to have peace and work together
nobody is gonna kiss anybody ass about this issue, it is what it is folks
on both sides of this one coin have to look at themselves and OWN how they hate and diss the otherside
actually the meer fact that this is being discussed here has promise cuz when I first started this site the first poll I put up asked there a divide and folks were like fronting on the truth we have all lived with HELLA DIVIDE and NO END IN SITE.
What I won't support on HIPHOPkc is Beef founded or unfounded. if you coming to the board with lots of frustration, before you even introduce yourself, and folks gotta be dissed for their choice not being your choice, then take it offa here
if how ever
you wanna stike up a honest back and forth without dissin or name calling on these boards you know I'm down.
its up too ALL OF US both sides of this one thing called hiphop culture to find out if we are one or just fakin. if we fakin lets move on, if its too hot, to discuss here, let take it live, if folks gonna be packin gats , I won't be hostin it I hate that everytime I start to host an event, I even have to think like this. whether you admit it or not this, is on the mind of every venue in this city they want the drawing power of hiphop, ie $$$$$ its just that the stakes is high taggin, no tippin, demandin and for some too high (loss of life)
I will not have someones injury or worst death on my heart from trying do the right thing and somebody disrespectin the whole thing by turing it into another media opportunity to say SEE HIPHOP IS VIOLENT, AIN'T NO LOVE IN HIPHOP ITS ALL HATIN
its up to us to find a way to be with each other.
maybe even if this larger city hasn't found a way in all these years.
[b:d7b77bfbe3]
remember: united we stand , devided we fall
never been truer than with hiphop in Kansas City [/b:d7b77bfbe3]
long as we fightin with each other over who is who and what is what, the city and its rules and hatin can keep us all being happy for a little hand out here and there, instead of celebratin and rejoicing our freedom to live and create this culture.
troost is Kansas City's choosen dividing line ( it was planned this way to keep us separate) but its not mine and I hope it's not for K C hiphop. WE have too much to offer, too much talent and creativity its move away from mimmicking KC'S separation ways and energy.
WHAT WE GON DO STAND STILL OR MAKE A MOVE?

Herein lies the problem.
We never quite cross the threshold.
We're always standing just at the foot of a real breakthrough when communication breaks down completely.
[quote:4f4e669ecf]nobody is gonna kiss anybody ass about this issue, it is what it is folks on both sides of this one coin have to look at themselves and OWN how they hate and diss the otherside[/quote:4f4e669ecf]

I am in no position to expect that you'll ever revise the charter.
That's not my decision to make so I have no expectation.
I will say this, I don't think it's conducive to either honesty or conflict resolution. And I think in some small way that curbs the chance that such discussions will ever end in resolution.
[quote:4f4e669ecf]long as we fightin with each other over who is who and what is what, the city and its rules and hatin can keep us all being happy for a little hand out here and there, instead of celebratin and rejoicing our freedom to live and create this culture.[/quote:4f4e669ecf]
I'm not fighting with anyone.
I merely pointed out that the views expressed by certain people are a shared opinion among a community that's been silenced, ostracized or both by people who'd rather not hear about the failings of this romanticized, idealistic Rap community we have here in Kansas City. Look no further than the Sunday night commentary...That's proof that problems lie just beneath the surface.
There's nothing all at wrong with pushing towards a more unified scene, but if we can't decry the "evils" within it how else can we get there?
In short terms...How can conflict resolution exist without first outlining the conflict that needs resolution?
Ultimately, folk can do what they want.
I just think we're talking out of both sides of our mouths when we say that we want a harmonious Rap community, but aren't interested in hearing where we might need improvement.
Remember, I don't have a bone to pick.
But there are folks who do. And again, all I'm saying is...
Maybe we should listen to them.
Take that with a grain of salt.
Uno.

I don't have many new ideas to add on the issue at hand, I can only offer my own personal mantra. I, personally, do not care if a "scene" exists or not. I welcome the opportunity to work with like minded individuals, but at the end of the day I go home to my own life....if I become successful off of music, of course I would try to open doors for certain artists around here that I respect. BUT, I am not at all interested with being the person "putting KC on the map". I'm from Mass, but I've lived here for 8 years now, I rep both areas....but when it comes to hiphop, my main goal is to further my own progression. If others can reap any benefits from the success of one individual, great....if not, you have no right to be mad about it. I feel there are a host of artists that share the same "vibe" as I do: Reach, Stik, Pro, Joe Good...to name a few. They appear to practice what I call "grassroots hiphop" straightforward, raw...emotion. So I assume (maybe ignorantly) that we would all at some point share some of the same fans, but I would not expect fans of more club or "street" oriented music to ride around bumpin Approach. That's just how the game goes, therefore, it's too diverse in this area to actually be one "scene".
I don't see why everyone is so worked up, you can only do you. It's like Mac said....DIY, that's all you can worry about. Hiphop fans, in general, are about as loyal as a rabid dog....they want what's hot or what's popular and nothing more. I'm willing to bet that if Mac does a show in Mpls, he'll get WAAAY more fans to come out than here in his own hometown...am I wrong?

[quote:1a80e40433="maclethal"]But even once a month, why should someone have to spend money to support something if they don't like it?
And honestly, in this area, [b:1a80e40433][size=18:1a80e40433]I can pretty much promise you that you won't see that[/size:1a80e40433][/b:1a80e40433], unless all of us get our own dedicated followings, and decide to intermesh them with eachother.
If... you... don't... see... a... scene...
D.I.Y. FOR LIFE.
DO IT YOURSELF.[/quote:1a80e40433]
Yeah, who posted anything about supporting something you don't like? You obviously go to the shows you like, and not the ones you don't.
Since it seems to be so hard to understand what I'm saying I'll make it a little easier.
[u:1a80e40433]From the artists standpoint[/u:1a80e40433]
In Kansas City there are hiphop shows featuring artists. If you like the artist performing or maybe are just friends with them you should (don't have to) go to thier shows. This act of generosity when multiplied by however many fans/friends is supportive of the artist.
[u:1a80e40433]From a venues standpoint[/u:1a80e40433]
When bars get lots of people who are seeming to be having a good time and spending money this looks good for future business transactions. If this happens at you or your friends shows then maybe someone should ask a bartender or manager to look at all of the people having fun and buying stuff then consider doing it again sometime.
[u:1a80e40433]How this helps the "scene"[/u:1a80e40433]
Once everyone sees how much fun you and your friends are having while listening to good music then they might want to come too. Eventually there will be too many people for one bar and other bars will get jealous and think "I wanna be cool too". Then you solicit them as you did the first venue. The goal is to maybe one day have an ongoing circuit of shows at multiple venues locally that generations to come can inherit to carry the torch onward.

yes I agree that is the goal, I'm not sure who we're talking about here when you say "anyone" if I know that I could begin to better picture what mutual respect might look like.[/quote:92c7e001ae]
In a general sense, I don't think any of the parties involved in this discussion are looking for anyone else to overextend themselves and pacify them. Folk just want to be heard...felt.
[quote:92c7e001ae]What's the charter you are referring to? oh maybe you mean the site's one rule NO BEEFzone?

No, I don't think it's choking off communication entirely, but I do think that along with that ideology comes the mincing of words. And when heated discussions do arise often time that ideology is evoked and we lose traction on where that discussion might've been headed.
[quote:92c7e001ae]What would you do reach? how would you construct the site so that folks felt less restricted and could speak more openly?[/quote:92c7e001ae]
I honestly think, personally, that I would allow any discussion to materialize so long as it isn't patently offensive and demoralizing to anyone poster of this forum. The dashboard is more than capable of deleting and/or editing any such material.
A perfect example is a thread that is currently open in the AATHG sub-forum. DT1994 had a lengthy post about how he as a patron was treated at The Record Bar. While I thought the off-color characterization of Toon and TRB staff was completely unnecessary (which I later edited out) I thought there was still value in his overall point.
Like I've said in the past, I'm not a fan of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Often times people do cross the line in the manner in which they vent or express their personal feelings, but if there is a valid message to be found within that rant it should at least be entertained.
[quote:92c7e001ae]my thoughts are that's an in person thing beef, discussion that can lead towards resolution.

My only defense of the "no beef" charter for the site is that by having such a regulation you eliminate people willfully sounding off on others without ever having to deal with them in person.

It's going to take time to forge that kind of community.

after taking in what I think you are saying, it could be that I have a knee jerk reaction to the heat of langauge without a total grasp of what is being said. I am taking this under advisement as of today to see if my generational thing is maybe overeacting in some subconscious way.
for now I am content to know that you and others who feel a stronger committment to the mission and content of this site (hiphopkc.com) are watching and wanting similar end results. I can take more time to sort through what is being said and ALLOW more development knowing there are more who are watching as well.
I want unity so bad sometimes I can't get a perspective on the hughness of the processes it might take to lead to it. for me it feels like the lack of unity locally comes at a great price in the overall outcome for everyone involved.
I have several ideas I am currently ruminating upon that would/could aid in getting us there, but I am timid and feeling a bit pollyannaish so far to pursue them.
Also I have such a level of frustration with the few of this culture overshadowing the many who are day in day out going about their lives hoping for the best wishing no one ill or harm. the media coverage has such a impact on those not living this lifestyle. it seems insurmountable to shift the impressions at times.

DAMN, YA'LL DONE GOT MY LAZY, HIGH ASS TO COMMENT ON THIS.....
Point Blank people fear what they dont understand, on both sides of this "fence" thats splitting us as musicians. I Think that is alot of people had a dialogue with Christos prior to forming an opninion you'd see alot more people championing the cause. Im sick of the diplomats and well-wishers that talk trash on an artist for believing in their message and having a sharp toungue to put it out. if more people fought for something in our fair city we might not all hate on it like we do. My man got more years(in age and hip-hop experience) in than 90 percent of those that have an opinion of him, and its disrespect not to have a convo with him b4 blasting him in any form ofmedia(inet, word of mouth, etc.). There are tru masters of our craft, right here in kc, that some of you under-30's (not all) need to learn about and recognize when you see them in the street instead of regarding them as barbarians because your will isnt as strong.
In closing id like to say that there is nothing wrong with people having their beliefs, they just need to be prepared to stand for them once in awhile in a constructive manner. no violence, no screaming, no lasting implications. back in the day, if musicians had a problem with one another, in the words of George Clinton and his contemporaries, they would "TAKE IT TO THE STAGE!"
when you leave this world, no one will care about your opinions, only what you did to stand by them....
p.s.
If you dont know me now, u will soon, i wont go silent for another year,
