i don't want to sound like a douchebag, but why are all the good shows in kc at least eighteen and over? i mean, when i'm twenty one, i probably won't want to hang around with a buunch of teenagers, but any teenager that would go to a cage show is probably ok. damn.

first most shows are in bars. they have rules they have to abide by in order to keep their licenses second no one to date has a. identified b. pursued and c. developed relationships with venues other than bars third the attendance of 18 and under folks to what few events there are has not made it a priority of the community to make this happen don't know but these factors along are a challenge are there others I didn't touch on? holla

for real T. what do you think could be done to change it? getting old is an understatement 4 real how the multigenerations of kc hiphop gonna mix it up in a 21 and over bar? haven't found a way for that to happen yet so what are the alternatives?

Yeah since I'm like the only artist repping the 15-16 year old group in KC. lemme tell you what I think..... MORE SHOWS AT COMMUNITY CENTERS! Me getting into a 18 up show is a no go let alone the Peanut (The Pinnacle of The LIVE Hip Hop KC scene I presume). I mean if you can book more shows like at Comm centers that would make it open to a lot of people. Either that or other spots dedicated to Live Performances. Or maybe (this is a (VERY LONG SHOT) we just like build a place or rent out a spot downtown specifically for Hip Hop.... I mean Hip Hop is supposed to be for everyone. Not just 18-21+. PLus doing a couple of these thing might help sales and promotion for the artist themselves.... I mean cuz you know how us "youngins" love to spend money on stuff. And the younger group isn't necessarily tied down by the stresses and responsibilities of you grown folks, meaning that you would have a lot more people (as well as the regulars) showing up to the events.... I remember going to 18 and over shows when i was 16. It was fun to mix it up with the older guys and have coffee or soda when everyone else was drinking in the parking lot. Now that i'm 28, I want to have a brew and watch a show, have a good time and chat with the performers after. It cost a few hundred beans for a bar that does not serve food to have all ages shows and the doormen are on the prowl for anyone underage sneaking drinks. All ages shows are cool but I don't think I'd go if I couldn't booze it up. That's just me. Most kids are punks and I don't feel like dealing with a bunch of brats that i don't know either. Anti Crew had the BEST underage crowd and there were never any problems when thay had shows. They covered the license with attendance and really promoted. You don't make money off of brew but sodas are a buck. If there were more quality runs like their example, i think that bars would be more open to all ages shows.

I've found that the Creative Minds center is a nice venue that allows us to put on all-ages shows. It's not really tapped that much except by the Hip Hop Academy. I would love to get like a nice end of school or something down there. ya know, do some things to jumpstart that as a (more regular) venue. to answer Miles, I personally haven't been to a whole bunch of venues around here...the peanut, recordbar, harlings, el torreon...ummm...backyards, basements, schools, and community centers...that's about it. We played the peanut a couple times last year before they put that to an end. I've been to the recordbar a couple of times, so I know they [i:f9be171333]will[/i:f9be171333] do all ages. I don't have any clue as to how to get them, but that would be a great spot. I don't know what other spots would allow all ages shows in town. If yall know of some, share the goodness.

I feel ya on this Machine. I remember always wanting to hit up shows and it seemed most of them were 21+. Thankfully I turned 21 earlier this year and this is no longer an issue. The best advice I can give you is if you really wanna see some shows happen voice your opinons to the local artist. Most of them love music and would play anywhere check around local coffee shops always seem to have little shows going on.

what about assemblies at local high schools? what about community centers, think outside of the box. Where is there free or cheap space available for performance, who do we need to talk with about it is there an activity director at each of the area high schools? how could the student councils at each school work to get area hiphop artists involved in talent shows, proms, mixers, what ever schools are doing to entertain area high school students. use your voices to ask questions, talk with principles, work from within to open up these opportunites I know of several local artists who have not only performed at area schools, but have been involved in class rooms as well, talking with students about music, graf, dance, djing and more. ask questions? report what you find out back to the site, let's put our heads together on as many alternative as we can come up with. peace nrg

Schools sound like a good Idea...if the students didn't show up... I say this because.... a lot of the hip hop groups around here or more mature in their topics and don't talk about Guns, drugs, women and materialism...and unfortunately thats all a lot of kids nowadays wanna hear about. I mean as far as public schools go at least. Private schools might be the way to go ... I'm pretty sure that would be the best bet as far as audiences go. You'd think that publics school kids would be more humble and appreciate good music but..... I don't know....

i understand what dr. t is saying... and i agree.. some schools, hip-hop just wont be appreciated.. but then again, a show is a show.. and you deal with what you can get.. and just rep this shit hard. no matter the outcome. i dont know.. i would i hit up some schools.. but then you got the teachers and what not interferring.. b/c i know those folks condemn hip hop in the first place.. atleast in ks.

hey yall, you are talking yourselves out of change before you attempt anything. I'm not saying it won't take some doing, but hey most change things do. these are suggestions about possibilties. anyone who wants to, can give it a try. let's work around our personal biases at least long enough to attempt reaching out . the whole dilemma is about thinking outside the box to bring us together right just take it one step at a time. talk to some friends, then plant the seeds, then encourage brainstorming and idea sharing, then do recon to strategize, then plan, and then spring into action peace have a good one

We're playing a show at our old high school in a couple of days actually... I'm down with playing for the people OUR age. We were actually trying to one for another school, but that kind of fell through. I'm all about thinking out of the box. Give me a cd player and a mic (or megaphone, heck I'll just talk really loud) and its on. I mean we've played in coffee shops and people's backyards (thanks Necia, why not more of these?). there's places...we just gotta look and try harder as has already been mentioned.

I know whats abundant in our society and y'know I agree that the Music reflects it's society... it would be silly to say it didn't...but our society (as far as I'm concerned) is pretty sh*tty. We need to let people know that theres more to life than just whats in there neighborhood. Y'know And Necia is right we still cant give up on the Idea yet.... but like AWE said it'll be kinda hard to find someone willing to do it. And the whole teachers and staff thing.... And like Atilla said I like the thought of having a show in a more "humble" environment....Backyards and parks and stuff sound cool to me if the weather is right....

man i just remember.. b/c we had a hip hop club at our school.. ..and i mean, it was the dopest thing ever we had bboys.. emcee's would be battle'n a the lunch tables.. we even had a table at the culture fair.. with a boombox set up.. it was some cool shit.. ..then i remember folks shuttin us down b/c we stirred up too much commotion.. and i was pissed.. when they shut that down, i still had 2 years of high school left. i even triedd to restablish it.. and get some future events going.. but the staff just wasn't having it.. i dont know.. public schools is just wack to me.. im with tilla though, im definately down for performing for poeple my age.. as well as thinking out the box like necia said... i think that, if we where to walk into a random high school.. and perform.. i think it'd be a good oppurtunity to educate some folks.. about hip hop.. as a culture/lifestyle.. not just the music aspect. it wont hurt to try right? i think imma have a talk with some poeple.

i think the icehouse moved to el torreon.. ..and they usually aren't the best peeps to work with atleast from personal experiences.. i know kids my age got dough.. ..and i know everytime theres a break in school.. (winter, spring, thanksgiving..) they are always in town asking me about some shows.. even peeps up at juco keep asking about some all ages shows. ..that shit in west bottoms sounds hella dope though we should set some shows up there.. whats good with that?

network with local artists, get heard by them, make yourself available for collaborations or a verse here and there, call a family meeting or contact folks one at a time. do your homework, then pitch your vision to them show that your cd could sell for a price if you have 200 X say @ $5 each you could earn enough to re up or record some more material anyway, make sure you know the math and profitablitiy of your project then pitch that and ask for them to invest $25 $50 $100 (or whatever they can) each toward you getting your stuff pressed pay them back off the top of whatever money you make from the sale of your cd

this is somewhat unrelated but today i got a job as a "youth specialist" at a juvenile detention center. i was thinking about whether i could turn any of these kids on to some decent music. or vice versa maybe.

That would be ridiculously dope. but what would also be ridiculous, would be throwing it and having 20 people show up over the course of the whole day. not being pessimistic, but from personal experience, there's been some good shows thrown with pretty well-known acts (...as seen in other threads) and very few people show up...most of the crowd ends up being other artists 🙁 ...but I do think that would be dope...

this is good very good. in this area people aren't gonna show up if they don't know who you are,that's why it's important for the artist to collab no matter who you are.the artist control this area,if you guy's don't pull together then the public is only gonna react to what they see you do.i'm very impressed with this thread,cause i never thought about the 18 and under scene.i know this is gonna work out..

On the side of electronic music, look at a local production company/online magazine like phocas.net. Almost all of phocas' shows are 18 and up or all ages. Granted, the young kids do act like young kids. But phocas (run by a guy named Todd) has the youth of electronic music in KC WRAPPED AROUND HIS FINGER. He's fostering something for the kids, and it comes back to him when they turn 21.

Just to let you know the possibility is there... I recently went to a show at this spot called the Vera Project in Seattle Center (all ages). Basically this place is like a creative minds center, but somehow they got sufficient budgeting to build a stage and put a recording studio in the upstairs. All free to use. Something to look into.
