Celebration of HipHop in Minneapolis
4th Annual Twin Cities Celebration of Hip Hop Overview
* The Twin Cities Celebration of Hip Hop is an annual event bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate the power of community through the hip-hop culture
* Over the last three years almost 10,000 people from around the world have taken part in the festival and conference
* This year’s festival will focus on community and physical health issues that directly impact young people’s lives. The issues will range from violence, racism, and teen pregnancy to diet and hygiene.

A major part of the hip hop festival is the performances of local and national acts.
National Acts: Clipse, Cee-Lo Green, Camp Lo, Jean Grae, Crazy Legs
Local Acts: Heiruspecs, The C.O.R.E, Traditional Methods, Slug of Atmosphere and much more.
Emcee Battle
* One of the biggest attractions that grows every year is the Emcee Battle or the rap competition. The Emcee Battle is a tournament style competition of the best emcees or rappers in the Twin Cities. The battle starts off with 16 rappers and ends with only one reigning champion who is rewarded by a large cash sum or other prizes. The idea is for the emcees to compete one on one in two one minute rounds and the winners are decided by crowd appreciation i.e. applause, screams, whistles.
DJ Battle
n The DJ Battle is also another highly regarded competition amongst Twin Cities Hip Hoppers. The format is 8 DJs competing to be the number one DJ in the Twin Cities through a tournament of one-on-one battles; with experienced judges and crowd participation being factors in determining the winner. The champion is then rewarded in a large cash sum or other equal prizes and holds the title until the next year.
Break-Dancing Battle
n B-Boying or B-Girling, otherwise known as breakdancing, is a highly physical, acrobatic and gymnastic dance often associated with spinning on one’s head, elbow or hand, etc. In this battle 8 B-Boy/B-Girl crews or groups will compete against each other to win a huge cash prize or gift equivalent. Winners are chosen by experienced judges and the groups, not the individual dancers win. This battle often has the most money involved because of the large groups of people who enter; this battle also has one of the largest audiences.
Beat-Boxing Battle
* Beatboxing is music that is created solely by the musician’s mouth often imitating percussive sounds and instruments. In this tournament 8 beatboxers compete against each other in one-on-one rounds with the crowd’s excitement being the determining factor of who wins. The final champion in the competition receives a cash prize or gifts of equal value.
Production Battle
* The production Battle is a competition of the producers of the beats, rhythms or music that the rappers or emcees rap over. In this competition 8 producers play one minute snippets of beats that they have made off of a pre-selected sample and judged by accomplished producers to determine the winner. The winner receives either a large cash prize or comparable gift.
Hip-Hop Dance Competition
* The Hip Hop dance competition is four dance groups of dancers competing tournament style against each other for one final dance group taking the winning title. The winners are determined by experienced judges and the winners receive a large cash prize or gift equivalent.

* Twin Cities Celebration of Hip Hop 2003- Intermedia Arts, South Minneapolis. Acts included Camp Lo (Dymond Crook Records/ NY), Binary Star (MI/CA), Brother Ali (MN). Workshops included, Race and Hip Hop, Women in Hip Hop, Hip Hop History, Hip Hop and Global Politics. MC, DJ, break-dancing
* Twin Cities Celebration of Hip Hop 2004- East River Flats Park (University of Minnesota East Bank). Acts included Cee-Lo (Atlanta / Goodie Mob), Clipse (VA / Star Trak), Crazy Legs (NYC/ Rocksteady), Jean Grae (NYC), T- Hud (Troy Hudson/ Timberwolves). Workshops included, Hip Hop and Feminism, Why Should You Vote?, and Race and Hip Hop. MC, DJ, Break-dancing, beat boxing, and beat battles.
