When will it STOP! (Maintain Slain)
I on behalf of everyone here at Mental-E Challyngd Records would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Jermaine Martez Hughes a.k.a. Maintain of The Vigilanty Squad.
Maintain was shot down in a driveby late sunday/early monday outside of Rum Runners. Maintain was the youngest of the group at 19 and was a great talent out of Raytown, I'm sure he will be greatly missed.
Our condolences to Mr. Stinky and his staff over at Dedicated Records as well for the loss of one of thier own. May he live on in our hearts forever...

Another Kansas City Rapper Gunned Down, Police Look For Suspects

Kansas City, Missouri police have revealed that it is struggling to gather leads and come up with information on the recent murder of KC rapper, Jermaine "Maintain" Hughes.
Hughes was gunned down outside of KC's Merriam nightclub this past Monday. Kansas City Department detective Tom Prudden said investigators are having a hard time getting witnesses to cooperate. Police is certain there were several patrons in the club and that some saw shots fired at Hughes. He was hit twice.
"Nobody is being very cooperative. People are being extremely tight-lipped," Prudden told the Kansas City Star. Prudden added that investigators know that Hughes had friends in the club "and they're not making anything known to us."
Hughes, 19, or Raytown, Kansas City, was also known as Maintain of The Vigalanty Squad rap group. Hughes and The Vigalanty Squad members were reportedly at the Merriam nightclub this past Sunday night and early Monday morning. The shooting took place around 2 a.m. Hughes is the second rap artist from KC to be gunned down since last May. In late May, Fat Tone aka Anthony Watkins, 24, was discovered shot to death in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jermaine Akins, 22, also associated with KC's local rap scene, was found dead near Watkins.
Police named Watkins as a person of interest in the November murder of Vallejo rapper Mac Dre; aka Andre Hicks. Dre was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on Kansas City's U.S. 71 highway while he was being driven back to his hotel last November. Dre, 34, was in KC for a series of concerts and promotional appearances. His murder remains unsolved and Watkins was never officially called a suspect.
On Monday, The Vigalanty Squad's manager, Steven Smith, said the shooting was not gang- related and wasn't sparked by tension between rap groups.
"It's not a retaliation thing and it has nothing to do with Fat Tone or Mac Dre," Smith told the Star. "It's just Kansas City music life; jealousy with people. People get jealous because they aren't doing as well."
According to Smith, Hughes had been with the group for two years prior to getting shot. He had recently graduated from Raytown High School. The group had planned a trip to Connecticut to audition for major labels in August. Smith, who wasn't with the group at the time of the shooting, said he knew of an altercation earlier that fatal evening. Police said they didn't know the cause of the altercation. Since the shooting, investigators received a report that the fatal shots were fired from a gray vehicle.
"We think the people who did the shooting knew who they were shooting at," said Prudden. "We don't think it was a random drive-by."
