Family & Fans Celebrate Mac Dre Day In Honor Of Slain Rapper

Hundreds of people came together to celebrate Mac Dre Day in Vallejo, California on Tuesday.
Andre "Mac Dre" Hicks would have turned 35 on July 5th. Dre was killed in a drive-by shooting on Kansas City's U.S. 71 highway while he was being driven back to his hotel last November. Dre was in KC for a series of concerts and promotional appearances. The crime has yet to be solved eight months later. With a "Silence the Violence" theme, Mac Dre Day featured a talent show with pre-teen contestants dancing to Mac Dre songs and speeches commemorating the late rapper.
"We need to respect one another, live in peace, and get along with each other," shared Everett Robinson, 44, of Vallejo. "We need to encourage people to really honor one another and build some wholesome relationships as opposed to building tension with one another."
Co-organizer Betty Landers hopes to turn the Mac Dre Day into an annual event. Landers, who is the grandmother of Dre's daughter, is also involved with the late rapper's Andre Hicks Scholarship Fund committee. Meanwhile, Allen Hicks, Dre's father, said the celebration was a move towards a "positive direction" for the youth of Vallejo.
"We have to have this as a healing experience," Hicks said. "It's going to take a lot of input to reduce the violence. That's a never-ending battle. We're trying to make my son's death into something positive."
Hicks continued, "They still haven't found who killed him and I don't feel good about that. Eventually, somebody will pay the price. It's in God's hands as far as I'm concerned."
Mac Dre released over eight independent projects spanning from 1992 to 2000. The rapper collaborated with West Coast artists like B-Legit, Kokane, Warren G and JT The Bigga Figga.
