[size=9:6fa78849aa]nrg notes: Thanks for a great time Jenee. I've been back to friends many times since we met there for lunch. Thankyou for thinking I'm news worthy as well. [b:6fa78849aa]heres a tiny story for you about your article:[/b:6fa78849aa] I was out walking mr. beasley (I do this alot) and was walking by one of my neighbor's home, when she walked out to visit for a minute. After we talked for a minute she said, I read an article about you today and then she said," when I read the title Mother of kc hiphop scene" I thought well this should/better be about necia, whose the imposter? when she saw my name as she started to read, she let out a sigh of relief and said to herself "thats better". She then ran in the house to get the paper which she gave to me[/size:6fa78849aa] JENEÉ OSTERHELDT Necia Gamby is a genuine hip-hop head. And she happens to be 52 years old. As mother of rapper Joe Good and sound engineer Jaz, you’d expect her to have a working knowledge of hip-hop, but Necia has a love affair with the culture that is all her own. “My children invited me into their world, and I love it,” says Gamby, who fell in love with the music in 1995 when she heard “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” by Common. “It was so vivid and obviously a romance, you could feel the love of it, and it made me feel warm. I’ve been following his music ever since.” She has also been following hip-hop since then, specifically the Kansas City scene. She makes it to almost every show. From Reach and C.E.S. Cru to the Soul Servers and SoundsGood, she has seen them all. And where other mothers might stand out, Gamby fits right in. I’ve danced alongside her at parties like Feel Sexy at the Hangout and Dance Floor Domination at the RecordBar. With her gray locks pulled back into a ponytail, she is a free spirit who often greets me with a hug and a compliment. That’s just the way she is, always making you feel comforted, just like your own mama would. “Necia is kind of the mother of the scene around here,” says Reach, 27, winner of the 2005 Scion Next Up national emcee search. “Most of us don’t have relationships with our mothers where we can get the kind of support that she gives because of the generation gap. But she is the voice of reason that many of us go to for guidance and overall direction for what we are trying to do with music as a business.” In addition to being a mother figure, major fan and massage practitioner, she is also a motivator and organizer for the local hip-hop scene. “Hip-hop is a culture; it’s the future. Why fight against it when we can join in? I offer them everything I’ve learned,” says Gamby, who is the driving force behind HipHopKC.com, a Web site that connects the local hip-hop communities here and in Lawrence. In May she hosted a Hip-Hop Awareness Week that included everything from forums on the history of Kansas City hip-hop to a community kickball game. And she’s working on a series of seminars that will teach the various elements of hip-hop, from beat-making to public relations. “In a recent speech, KRS-One said that what hip-hop is missing is our parents,” she says over a bento box at Friends Sushi. “I want to change that. I want to be in it knee-deep and waist-high.” And that’s where she is.
