http://redbullmusicacademy.com/TUTORS.9.0.html?act_tutor=179 Madlib Armed with several identities the self-acclaimed workoholical MC-DJ-producer Madlib creates the finest crate-dug-beats, self-produced vintage Jazz and astrotravelling music. Madlib was born in 1973 as Otis Jackson Jr. in Oxnard, California. His father was an accomplished R&B session musician who played with the likes of David Axelrod and H.B. Barnum. His uncle is Jon Faddis, a legendary trumpeter who played with Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and Bob James. Following in the footsteps of his family Madlib is in the studio for up to 10 hours a day, creating albums every three days. Madlib is rapper and beat-excavator of the Lootpack, a dynamic Hip Hop-trio that has left headz amazed with their debut 'Soundpieces: The Antidote' (Stones Throw, 1998). Madlib has also been Mcing as his weeded-out alter ego Quasimoto since 1996. In 2000 the trippy and nonchalant nasal MC debuted on an album 'The Unseen' with the same nonsense qualities of Kool Keith and guzzling the same drugs as Eminem. He simulated a complete jazz band called Yesterday´s New Quintet. The album 'Angles Without Edges' (Stones Throw, 2001) calls spirits from 70s jazz including David Axelrod, Lonnie Liston Smith and Roy Ayers. In order to let his love of jazz shine through he taught himself to learn to play the Fender Rhodes, drums and guitars within a couple of months. His remixes and collaborations range from Bilal, Zero 7 and Glenn Lewis to The Beastie Boys, The Liks, Xzibit, Dilated Peoples, Planet Asia to King Britt and Jay Dilla. He produced the entire album of underground suprise-act Declaime in 2001, as well as. tracks for the Alkaholiks and Peanut Butter Wolf whose Stones Throw label has given him the perfect outlet for experimentation. Madlib is currently producing a remix-CD of legendary Blue Note Pearls' Tribute albums to Stevie Wonder and Azymuth are finished already, as are a mix album of vintage reggae for Trojan Records, a new Quasimoto disc, a Madlib 'solo album' and a joint project with MF Doom under the group name of Mad Villain are work in progress. Madlib´s fans include the likes of D'Angelo, Jay Dee, Jazzanova, Limp Bizkit and DJ Shadow. For Q-Tip, Madlib is "a breath of fresh air". Madlib was voted Hip Hop producer of the Year 2001 by the listeners of Los Angeles' Friday Night Flavors on POWER 106. Related Links: http://www.stonesthrow.com
