Anti-Crew's mission is partially explained in the title of their album, The Progressive Movement: A Step Forward (Anticrew). The group (with roots from the growing Kansas City hip-hop scene, but currently based in Chicago) believe that hip-hop, be it the music or the community, has room for improvement, if not upliftment, which obviously suggests that they feel the current state of things is not as good as it should be. MC Flare The Rebel and DJ Eternal are positive in their approach, and positive in believing that the music and community deserves to progress and nurture itself. They proceed to explore the endless potential on an amazing 19-track journey.
There is equal emphasis on lyrics and production. If you want something to listen to, concentrate on and comprehend, this is your album. There are a lot of stories involved, and Flare The Rebel does not focus on repeating five words 32 times in a row. Most of the tracks are produced by DJ Eternal, and he's not about just finding RAERS and plodding crust, his style is very musical and at times atmospheric. Together, they come off like a cross between Dilated Peoples and The Goats, with a pinch of DJ Krush thrown in. They are message-oriented, although the different styles throughout the album make them less monochromatic than other "conscious rap groups". Hip-hop fans who are into the music for nothing but a need to get their iPod accessory on should avoid this. For everyone else looking for what's been lacking, this is a nice dose of an antidote from the Anti-Crew.
