Just In !: Texas Board Of Education Declare Hip Hop Is Not A Cultural MovementTopic: The Bigger Picture-0ne World
March 13, 2010 02:03:00 PM CST | By Krysten Hughes

Members of the Texas State Board of Education gave preliminary approval Friday to remove significant areas of curriculum from civil rights and global politics and replace them with conservative historic figures and beliefs. Courses that would be affected by these changes include social studies, history and economics.
One of the subjects debated amongst the lawyers, dentists and publishers, who make up the board, was whether or not Hip Hop should be taught as a cultural movement. According to the Huffington Post, right wing members voted that Hip Hop should be deleted as a requirement and that students should not be taught about its cultural impact across not only the United States, but the world.
Conservatives also approved to have a sociological focus on institutional racism and its presence in American society banned from the books, as well as removing important references of Latino and Hispanic figures throughout history.
The Texas State Board of Education approved of the new expectations with a 10-5 vote, and a final decision is expected to be made in May, but not before holding an open forum where the public can produce additional arguments and even possibly, different amendments to stop some of the changes from being implemented.
If the amendments are approved, the changes to the content will affect learning nationwide because most school textbooks are published in Texas and would be taught to millions of students for the next 10 years.

Just In !: Leadership Lessons from Barack Obama's SpeechTopic: Press
John Baldoni
Leadership at Work 8:16 AM Wednesday April 16, 2008
nrg note:AND AT PLAY

The praise from both sides of the political aisle for Barack Obama's speech on race was generally positive. Both former presidential aide David Gergen and Daily Show host Jon Stewart noted that Obama spoke to us "like adults." How refreshing, the commentators implied, to trust people to evaluate a serious message and make their own judgments. While the effect on Obama's campaign remains to be seen, corporate leaders may draw lessons now.

Just In !: All hail hip-hop's ageing parentsTopic: Artists
Dele Fadele April 11, 2008

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/04/all_hail_hiphops_ageing_parent.html

Thirty-one years on from its origins in the South Bronx, New York, hip-hop has metamorphosed into a billion-dollar industry; a cut-throat, fast-turnover model of capitalism. It's a wonder that some artists have evolved with hip-hop, not fallen by the wayside, to prosper as vanguards of the original culture. These are hip-hop's elder statesmen and women, those who bring light when hip-hop threatens to fall into a darkened abyss.

Miles Bonny and Joe Good whip up hearty hip-hop with the upcoming Biscuits and Gravy.
BY ANDY VIHSTADT

Miles Bonny's apartment looks virtually unlived in apart from a ransacked back room scattered with CDs, computer equipment, production gear, and milk crates filled with vinyl. Scotch-taped to the otherwise bare white wall above Bonny's Dell computer is a magazine photo of a disheveled third-world girl wearing large headphones.
"I'm really not a messy person," Bonny insists, surveying the mess. "I'm just not organized."

Just In !: SOUNDS OF THE TOWNTopic: Press

A look and listen at the best of locally produced CDs

The Kansas City Star

If the local music scene is a beating heart, consider this its EKG. The prognosis: This ticker is thumping like John Bonham's kick drum.

The local music scene is more dynamic than it has been in a decade. Say what you want about technology and its effects on the music world, it has been the mighty enabler for dedicated local musicians, who can now do much more than just dream about finding someone to record and distribute their music. These days they can do it all on their own.

The albums reviewed here were all made by local bands and performers. All are available either in local music stores (chains and independents) or via the Web. This collection is hardly comprehensive; we had to leave some out (a space/time thing). But what's here is all good. In some cases it's better than stuff you'll read about in those glossy, fancy-pants music magazines. So read, listen and do what you can to support your local musicians.

Just In !: A race right out of the moviesTopic: Artists
Wednesday, October 6, 2004
BY PETER GOODMAN
STAFF WRITER

October 5, 2004

The Long Island Philharmonic's first concerts of the season, this past weekend, were about music and the movies. The orchestra was going to play the accompaniment to scenes from such classics as "Citizen Kane," "Gone With the Wind" and "Robin Hood."

So when music librarian David Carp discovered on Sunday, 20 minutes before the 7:30 p.m. curtain, that he had left the brass and percussion parts home, executive director Neil Birnbaum knew they had a problem. There was no way he could call a friendly neighborhood orchestra for spare parts. And Carp lives in Leonia, N.J.

What to do?

Fortunately, orchestra personnel manager Jon Taylor knew that a friend of his, trumpeter Francis Bonny, owned a motorcycle and lived in Teaneck, not from from Carp's house. Bonny was home, and Carp offered him $500 to get the parts to the John Cranford Adams Playhouse at Hofstra University in Hempstead.

Just In !: SoundsGood's New Music Featured on CD Baby .comTopic: MERCH

The SoundsGood "Money/Pacin" Maxi Single CD

will be featured on the front page of CDBaby.com THE Start DATE (mark it down somewhere) Sunday, September 19th, 2004

"One of the first things that SoundsGood brings to mind is a concept taught in contemporary classical composition courses: that which is outside the expected sound world or "tonal palette" is the most beautiful- that which your ear does not anticipate is what dives underneath your expectations and awakens a part of your nervous system that lies underneath the 'day-in-day-out' regime.

SoundsGood beautifully brings this concept into the hip hop realm. Building their own sound from a stylistic background of Outkast, Slum Village, Gangstarr, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Common, and others, SoundsGood lays down a kinetic, propulsive beat, chased down by cool, breezy, sizzling instrumentals and intent lyrics. Their smooth thread of soul and slight R&B groove gives them an accessibility that fans of more crossover styles (something along the lines of Spearhead) can get into as well.

This is slow-burning alternative hip hop that doesn't limit itself to what's been done before and doesn't hesitate to reach into opposing genres to give their grooves more vivid color." -CDBABY
